Managing Time in Terms of Doing School Works

Survey Report conducted by Group 5 (11-St. Philip)

Time management is essential in one’s life, especially when dealing with numerous
tasks and deadlines. According to the Oxford dictionary, Time management is defined
as “the ability to use one's time effectively or productively, especially at work.” The
concept of time management goes way back to the late 1800s to the early 1900s.
Frederick Winslow Taylor, who is considered to be the father of scientific management,
wrote a book entitled “The Principles of Scientific Management” in 1911 which tackles
better and more efficient ways of accomplishing different tasks. His goal was to find the
most effective ways to do each task quickly and to standardize labor processes and
equipment to enhance performance. Even though the idea of time management has
been explored for a century, it is still an essential factor, particularly for students.

Students who don’t have control over how they manage their time usually end up
letting their tasks pile up until the last minute, resulting in procrastination and a high
possibility of low productivity. On the contrary, if students know how to manage their
time and refrain from wasting their time on distractions, they would be able to focus on
their tasks and accomplish them ahead of time. Effective time management would also
help them reduce stress and allow them to be able to do other important tasks. The
researchers aim to poll high school students from various schools aged 16 to 21 using
the Likert scale to determine how they effectively manage their time and the common
factors that influence how they complete their duties. This is conducted in order to
demonstrate the proportion of students that either prioritize academics more or other
social activities above academics, as well as to emphasize the significance of time
management.

In conducting this survey report, the surveyors prepared a set of questionnaires


through the use of Google forms. This questionnaire aims to seek answers from the
respondents. Some of the questions are the following:

- My stress is lessened when I do my tasks ahead of time


- I prioritize doing the simpler schoolwork over the harder ones
- I spend two hours in doing my activities
- I usually breakdown for me to be able to clear thoughts and do the activities
- I allot personal time for myself

In order to receive a total of 100 responses, the questionnaire was distributed to the
various participants through the use of some social media platforms such as Messenger
and Facebook.
RESULTS

In figure 1 to 5 it will be shown the impact of school works in terms of time


management that the respondents state.

Figure 1 below shows the number of respondents per level on how their stress is
lessened once they do their task ahead of time. According to the study of Misra &
McKean, 2000 and Kearns & Gardiner, 2007 good time management skills have been
identified as having a “buffering” effect on stress and are a key indication of higher
performance and lower stress and anxiety in higher education. As figure 1 shows 43%
strongly agree that when they do the task ahead of time they are more relaxed and 1%
disagree in that statement.

Figure 2 below shows the number of respondents on what they prioritize more to
be able to make some time. According to the University of Georgia 2014 When faced
with a big task, it helps if we break the task down into smaller, more manageable parts.
This will help avoid stress and procrastination. As figure 2 shows, the 33% majority
agrees that they prioritize doing simple tasks over the harder tasks while 30% strongly
agree, still 11% disagree and 1% strongly disagree that they prioritize simpler tasks over
harder tasks.

Figure 3 below shows doing school tasks in 2 hours helps manage time. According
to Macan, Shahani, Dipboye, and Phillips 1990 the most significant aspect of time
management is “Perceived Control of Time”—In their research they found that students
who perceived that they were in control of their own time reported a significantly greater
work–life balance; a lower sense of work overload, and less tension than their peers. As
figure 3 shows, 37% of the majority of responses agree that they do school tasks in 2
hours while 24% are neutral and 12% disagree that they do school tasks for only 2
hours.

Figure 4 below displays the number of respondents by percentage of agreement


for how they typically break down to be able to clear their thoughts. According to
McCloud, K. 2019, October 16. Some individuals frequently have mental breakdowns,
whereas others suppress their emotions until they finally reach a breaking point.
Students tend to suffer from classes and overwhelming activities. They are
burdensome, unpleasant, and even just confusing. Students struggle despite wishing
that they would never have to deal with education again and this is why breakdowns
occur. As figure 4 shows, The majority of respondents (22%) reported they strongly
agreed that schools frequently break down to let their thoughts out, while only 7%
answered they disagreed.

Figure 5 below depicts the number of respondents by percentage of agreement for


allotting their personal time for themselves. According to Dr. Michael W. Kist, it's shockingly
simple to neglect to take care of our basic needs when deadlines, disorganized schedules,
and extra jobs all start stacking up on top of the other aspects of life. If you desire to excel
as a student, you must begin by looking after yourself on a daily basis. If you are drinking
from a dry well, you cannot assume to perform to the best of your ability. As figure 5 shows,
the majority of respondents (37%) strongly agreed on allotting their personal time for
themselves, while only 3% of respondents disagreed.
The usage of time by the students affects the overall performance of them in their
academics, having to provide for yourself, your social life, and your academics leads the
students to having difficulty in having their time managed. The data showed that 43% (out of
100) of the students tend to do their activities ahead in time while 33% of them prioritize
doing the simpler ones than the harder activities they need to do as it becomes easier for
them to finish all of their pending work.

Enhancing one’s ability is one of the factors that may affect once the management of
their time was applied in their works, but in the process of it comes the hardships where the
students tend to break down as to release those exhaustion and the overwhelming amount
of activities they need to comply with. Allotting personal time allows the student’s to have
their time to relax or to have their “me” time where they can go out to socialize or to earn
those sleep that they missed, but without forgetting about the responsibilities they still need
to do.

Overall, most of the students that answered the survey strongly agreed that they can
manage their time doing their homework while going to school as well. They can balance
their time and that makes their job easier, and accomplish the easier tasks first before the
challenging ones. It depends on the students' capabilities on how long they'll finish a certain
task.
