C) MANUAL HANDLING:
 Manual handling is any transporting or supporting of a load by one or more workers. It
includes the following activities: lifting, holding, putting down, pushing, pulling,
carrying, or moving of a load.
I. Hazards in Manual Handling

9 | Page
RAW MATERIAL BUILDING
Job Activity:

SUBSTRUCTURE ACTIVITY

 Manual handling can result in fatigue, and lead to injuries of the back, neck,
shoulders, arms, or other body parts.
Two groups of injuries may result from manual handling:
 Cuts, bruises, fracture etc., due to sudden, unexpected events such as accidents.
 Slips, trips & falls can happen anywhere while doing operation.
 Damage to the musculoskeletal system of the body (muscles, tendons, ligaments,
bones, joints, bursa, blood vessels and nerves) because of gradual and cumulative
wear and tear through repetitive manual handling.
These injuries are called ‘musculoskeletal disorders’ (MSDs) and can be divided
into 3 groups:
 Neck and upper limb disorders
 Lower limb disorders
 Back pain and back injuries.
There are several factors that make manual handling hazardous and increase the risk of
injury. These are called risk factors.

10 | Page
RAW MATERIAL BUILDING
Job Activity:

SUBSTRUCTURE ACTIVITY

The risk factors, particularly for back injury, are related to 4 aspects of manual
handling: the load, the task, the environment, and the individual.

II. Prevention Measures

 The negative health effects of manual handling can be prevented by trying to eliminate or
at least reduce the risk factors involved.
The following hierarchy of prevention measures should be used:

 Elimination
 First, can the work be designed and organized in such a way that manual handling can be
avoided completely, or at least restricted (e.g., using powered or mechanical handling
equipment such as conveyor belts, lift trucks, electric hoists, or gravity-inclined roller
track).

11 | Page
RAW MATERIAL BUILDING
Job Activity:

SUBSTRUCTURE ACTIVITY

 Technical measures
If manual handling cannot be avoided, automation, mechanization, and the use of lifting
and transport equipment should be considered (e.g., conveyors, hoists, cranes, vacuum
lifting devices, lift tables, pallet trucks, lift trucks, barrows, trolleys). However, attention
should be paid to ensure that new work risks are not created (e.g., through noise, or hand-
arm vibration).
 Organizational measures
 Organizational or administrative measures should only be considered if elimination of
manual handling is not possible, and if technical measures are not effective in reducing the
risks involved in manual handling. Heavy or frequent manual handling tasks should be
carried out by several people or, if possible, the amount that is handled should be reduced
or the load split into smaller ones.
 The rate of manual handling should not be set by a machine, supervisor, or colleagues.
The time taken to carry out manual handling tasks should be extended by taking breaks, or
by alternating them with other tasks so that the muscles have time to recover.

12 | Page
RAW MATERIAL BUILDING
Job Activity:

SUBSTRUCTURE ACTIVITY

 Provide information and training to workers

 If workers must carry out manual handling activities, they should be informed of the risks
of accidents and ill health, particularly concerning their specific tasks. They should also
receive training on the use of equipment and on correct handling techniques.

 Correct handling techniques

A. Lifting
Before lifting the load, you should plan and prepare for the task. Make sure that:
1. You know where you are going.
2. The area around the load is clear of obstacles.
3. Doors are open and there is nothing on the floor that could trip someone or make them slip
4. You have a good grip on the load
5. Your hands, the load and any handles are not slippery

13 | Page
RAW MATERIAL BUILDING
Job Activity:

SUBSTRUCTURE ACTIVITY

6. If you are lifting with someone else, both of you know what you are doing before you start
you should adopt the following technique when lifting the load:
7. Put your feet around the load and your body over it (if this is not feasible, try to keep your
body as close possible to the load and in front of it)
8. Use the muscles of your legs when lifting
9. Keep your back straight
10. Pull the load as close as possible to your body
11. Lift and carry the load with straight arms. Pushing and pulling Pushing and pulling handling
devices such as trolleys and barrows is particularly strenuous for the back, shoulders, and
arms.

v) The lap length in compression shall be equal to the development length in compression,
calculated as described in IS 456-1978 or as specified in drawing but not less than 24 dia.

 If the bars in a lap are not of the same diameters, the smaller will guide the lap length. The laps shall
be staggered as far as practicable and as directed by the Engineer

Spacing of bars:
 Keep a close watch on the workmen involved in placing and tying reinforcement maintain social
distance of 2 feet (minimum)
 Bars shall be placed in position as shown in the drawing. Guidelines as given in IS 456 shall be
followed or in case of difficulties as directed by the Engineer

i) Horizontal distance between two parallel main reinforcing bars shall usually not be less than
the greatest of the following:
1. The diameter of the bar, if the diameters are equal;
2. The diameter of larger bar, if the diameters are unequal; and
3. 5 mm more than the nominal maximum size of coarse aggregate (By using
reduced size of aggregate in congested reinforced area, conditions given here of
should be overcome.)

46 | Page
RAW MATERIAL BUILDING
Job Activity:

SUBSTRUCTURE ACTIVITY

ii) When needle vibrators are used, the distance between bars of a group may be reduced to
two- thirds of the nominal maximum size of the coarse aggregate, provided sufficient space
is left between group bars to enable the vibrator to be immersed.
iii) Where there are two or more rows of bars, the bars shall be vertically in line and the
minimum vertical distance between the bars shall be 15 mm, two-thirds the nominal
maximum size of the aggregate or the maximum size of bars, whichever is more.
Placing in Position:
 Workers shall wear hand-gloves and maintain social distance of min. 2 feet, during shifting, placing
reinforcement bars.
 All reinforcements shall be accurately fixed and maintained in position as shown on the drawings by
such approved and adequate means like chairs and/or concrete spacer blocks.

compromise on cover for foundation work.
 Reinforcement shall be in correct position prior to start of concreting.
 No reinforcing bar shall be placed on freshly laid concrete for adjusting bar spacing.
 Care shall be taken to maintain reinforcement in position and keep it clean, throughout the period till
it is embedded in the concrete
 Binding wire should no protrude in the cover area to the reinforcement.
 Where reinforcement bars are bent aside at construction joints and afterwards bent back into their
original position, care should be taken to ensure that at no time is the radius of the bend less than 4
bar diameters in case of plain mild steel or 6 bar diameters for deformed bars.
 Care shall be taken when bending back bars to ensure that the concrete around is not damaged or
disturbed.

Cover to reinforcement:
