OUR PERSONALITY

I. Introduction

Personality develops even before birth and if takes a lifetime struggle to shape one into a
whole and well - balanced personality. Personalities are the products of both genetics and
environmental factors. Research shows that twins separated at birth and brought up in different
environments often have similar personality traits such as posture, mannerisms, gestures, speed and
tempo in talk, expressive style habits and jobs. On the other hand, environmental factors including
family, friends and schools, also play important parts in the development of personality.

At the end of this activity, you can:

1. State the meaning and importance of personality


2. Identify the different personality traits
3. Describe the different components of Personality
4. Relate the importance of understanding one's self first before others.

III. Concept/s Explanation:

VARIED DEFINITIONS OF PERSONALITY

A. Santos in her book Personality for Today’s Youth, defines personality as the sum-total of our
qualities and characteristics as seen through how we walk, talk, dressed-up and also through our
attitudes, our interests and our ways of interacting other people. It refers further to all factors within
the person that influence his characteristic, ways of behaving, thinking and feeling.

Sferra et al. in their book on Personality Development and Human Relation defines personality
as the total person. It is the expression of what you are and what you do. It is the product of all
responses that are expressed in everyday living in the home, school, office, theaters and in streets or
even in the seclusion of your home.

Sewey and Humber (1966) describe our personality as the manner of how we relate our ideas,
our actions and our attitudes.

COMPONENTS OF PERSONALITY

Intelligence is not the only yardstick of one’s personality. In general, different aspects of
personality are:

a. Physical. This includes one’s mode of dressing, complexion, body built, posture, health and
facial expression.

b. Intellectual. This refers to the manner a person talks and the range of ideas that he possesses.
Mental alertness is an evidence of one’s intellectual capacity.

c. Social. This refers to how well you conduct yourself in public and how you get along well with
the group. It is by how you carry yourself socially and interact with other people.

d. Emotional. A person’s emotional make-up is shown by his likes and dislikes, his
aggressiveness and docility, how he perseveres when things become difficult; whether she is an
introvert or an extrovert, whether she is calm or nervous, and whether she loses her temper easily or
keeps her cool.

e. Value System. This includes a person’s attitude toward life, her moral principles, her beliefs.
This aspect is referred to as CHARACTER. It is shown in the way judgment is made whether her
actions and the actions of others are right or wrong. One’s personal philosophy of life and how she
values it are the result of meaningful and satisfying learning experiences.

To develop one’s personality does not mean that merely one aspect will be improved separately
from the other aspects. These aspects cannot be separated from each other. Education is concerned
with the total development of an individual into a wholesome person.
