1. Recognize and explain basic time signatures

2. Discuss the proper counting of beats

3. Create a musical notation with a given a time signature

Procedure:

The students will engage students in a game called “the genius cap”. While the music is playing

the genius cap will pass around the class. When the music stops, the one who’s wearing the

lesson. The teacher will define the term time signature and identify the parts of the time

signature. The teacher will also define the top numbers of time signatures and show a table of

bottom numbers and their corresponding value. The students will get examples of time

shown on the smartboard and the teacher will explain the different time signatures with musical

notation in each. The beats will also be counted and clapped for a hands-on experience for

students. Students will now be given a musical notation and will be asked to count the beat.

Assessment:

Students will be given two short scores on the smartboard, and they will be asked to identify the

time signature that should be used for the first and second one. The teacher will ask students to

count the beat of both measures of each staff.
