This worksheet will focus on the essence of technology and the relationship
between humans and technology according to the view of Martin Heidegger from his
lecture entitled “The Question Concerning Technology”, delivered in 1953 to the Bavarian
Academy of Fine Arts and published the year after.

anthropological view of technology, read pages 1-3 of the work of Martin

ELABORATE

Continue reading pages 6-11 of the lecture of Martin Heidegger to get a deeper
understanding of the concept of “Enframing”. Then work as a group to compare and
contrast through a ppt presentation the concept of modern technology, “challenges forth”
and pre-modern technology, “brings forth”. Outputs will be presented in our face-to-face
class. Please use the rubric below as your guide.

EVALUATE

Create a comic strip with 6 panels on the topic, “Dangers of Modern Technology.”
Place your outputs in an A4 sized paper and upload it on our MS Teams in pdf format.

WORKSHEET 6:
HUMAN FLOURISHING IN PROGRESS AND DE-DEVELOPMENT

OVERVIEW

In this worksheet, the concept of progress and the flourishing of human lives and
society as a whole will be reiterated. Discussion will include describing the characteristics
of human flourishing in the context of science and technology. And explain what de-
development means, and differentiate traditional notions of progress and de-
development through work of Jason Hickel’s article entitled “Forget ‘Developing’ Poor
countries, It’s Time to De-develop Rich Countries.”

ENGAGE

Nowadays, human beings put science upon a pedestal. As such,


Lewis feared that humanity might be headed for abolition. Learn more
about C.S. Lewis and his continuing case about Scientism. Read the article
written by John Malloy by scanning the QR code and answer the questions
in the next section.

C.S. Lewis was very much skeptic and critic of scientism because
he understood that there can be an abuse of the power of a scientist.
He understood that scientism creates trade-offs because not everything

EXPLAIN

After reading John Malloy’s article and watching the documentary about C.C.
Lewis’s “The Magician’s Twin,” work with your groupmates in answering the questions
below. All outputs will be written in a Manila Paper. Each group will assign a presenter
and will only be given 3 minutes for the presentation. Please see attached rubric at the
last page for your reference.

Group 1 - What is Scientism as described in the video? What was Lewis's opinion
about it? Explain.
Group 2 - Explain why C.S. Lewis compared Science to Magic as religion. Cite
examples.
Group 3 - Explain why C.S. Lewis compared Science to Magic as credulity. Cite
examples.
Group 4 - Explain why C.S. Lewis compared Science to Magic as Power. Cite
examples.
Group 5 - What is the principle of modernity as presented in the video? Why
should Science adhere to a moral basis not dictated by science itself?
