Title CUISINE IN CONSTRUCTING A CULTURAL IDENTITY FOR BROOKE’S
POINT

Research Gaps Several identities of other cultures have been established through
particularizing their specialty cuisine. Tam (2017) posited that multiculturalism
brings new tensions that shed light on the cultural power of food to articulate
authenticity (p. 44-55). In another work, Chavarro (2022) created a digest of
Paradiso’s culinary breakdown of Cuban cuisine and how it reflects the
identity of Cuban in its style and execution. Hence, the paper delves into the
inquiry of, what is the cultural identity of Brooke’s Point despite its being a
melting pot of cultures from other municipalities of Palawan. This form of
multiculturalism had been contributing to the demise of actually establishing a
distinct and exclusive culture unique to the people of Brooke's Point. In an
attempt at doing so, the researcher has linked the question of using the
municipality’s local fiesta, Pista’y ng Kaniyogan, as a reference in creating a
whole cuisine. Furthermore, the inquiry lies in how food is invariably a factor
in constructing a culture. This gap was based on the existing idea that
Octavia, Nasution, and Yudoko (2022) introduced wherein “Motivation” is a
keyword frequently investigated in food-sharing research to understand why
individuals participate in food sharing. The gap emphasizes that culture could
be a motivation for people to engage in food-sharing and can motivate a
whole cuisine to embrace the municipality’s local produce.

Research Objective #1 To identify an integration of coconut cuisine that shall accurately represent the
sense of becoming of the residents of Brooke’s Point.

Research Objective #2 To formulate a list of food dishes that only utilizes endemic ingredients found
within the Municipality.

Research Objective #3 To create a unifying identity amongst the constituents through the utility of
coconut-based cuisine.

Importance of the The idea of having a shared culture creates a sense of belongingness among
Study people. However, due to the diversity of people comprising the passer-by
municipality, there is a strong sense of multiculturalism. This sense of
multiculturalism does not blend well with the innate identity of Filipinos’
ethnocentricity and regionalism. This results in a sharp division among
Brooke’s Pointers, thus no unification. The presence of food as a shared
identity that utilizes the local produce, being coconut.
The importance of this study serves as a linking bridge between the theory
and the praxis of food influence and the symbiosis of material culture with the
people’s sense of belongingness. As a participatory research, this paper shall

be used to construct and maintain a geographical community of people.
