THE RESEARCH
OBJECTIVE
Purpose: to identify and describe the realization
of interpersonal and ideational metaphors in
thesis texts written by undergraduate students of
the English Education study program.
THE RESEARCH 1. Theoretically, this research can
CONTRIBUTIONS strengthen the functional linguistic
theories presented by Halliday.
2. Practically, this study contributes to
students, lecturers, and researchers
enhancing, developing, and increasing
knowledge, skills, or performance
related to the realization of
interpersonal and ideational
metaphors in both written and spoken
texts.
THE RESEARCH DESIGN
This research design uses a phenomenological approach based on a
qualitative method, in which literature research is conducted by studying
thesis texts and collecting English theses written by undergraduate
English students directly.
THE RESEARCH AREA

The thesis writing of undergraduate students of the English

education study program at Artha Wacana Christian
University, Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara Province,
Indonesia.
THE RESEARCH
PARTICIPANTS
The participants for this research are
undergraduate students of the English education
study program.
DATA COLLECTION
METHODS
In this study, the type of data used is qualitative data and also supported
by quantitative data to give more explanation of the qualitative analysis.
The data were collected by directly gathering the English theses written
by 70 undergraduate students and using random sampling by taking 15
students.
DATA
ANALYSIS The data shows the use of both
ideational and interpersonal

METHODS
metaphors presented in 5 tables which
contained the use of both ideational
and interpersonal metaphors in the
writing of undergraduate students’
thesis texts, the frequency number of
interpersonal metaphors in each
chapter of the thesis, the examples of
interpersonal metaphors in text, the
frequency of ideational metaphor
realization, and some examples of
ideational metaphors.
DATA
ANALYSIS
METHODS More explanation of interpersonal and
ideational metaphors in the text is
orderly presented as follows.

Realization of Interpersonal
Metaphors in Texts
Realization of Ideational Metaphor
in the Thesis Texts
CONCLUSION
According to the result of the research, it can be
concluded that interpersonal and ideational
metaphors were both used in texts, the realization of
interpersonal metaphors in the mood system in texts
was dominated by declarative mood and the
realization of ideational metaphor was used more
than an interpersonal metaphor because of the text
channel, written text. Furthermore, prepositional
phrases also picture the ideational metaphor
realization which is why it is suggested that lecturers
should give more exercises on how to use
interpersonal and ideational metaphors.
