TRAINING PROPOSAL
ORIENTATION ON ESTABLISHMENT OF ALTERNATIVE WETTING AND DRYING
TECHNOLOGY

I. TRAINING OVERVIEW
Rice is typically grown in rice paddy fields that are continuously flooded up to 7 – 10 days
before harvest. Lowland rice requires a lot of water, on average, it takes 1,432 liters of
water to produce 1 kg of rice in an irrigated lowland production system.
Total seasonal water input to rice fields varies from a little as 400 mm in heavy clay soils
with shallow groundwater tables to more than 2,000 mm in coarse textured (sandy or
loamy) soils with deep groundwater tables.
Around 1,300 – 1500 mm is a typically amount of water needed for irrigated rice in Asia.
Irrigated rice receives an estimated 34/43% of the total world’s irrigation water or about
24-30% of the entire world’s developed fresh water resources.
Worldwide, water for agriculture is becoming increasingly scarce, due to its semi – aquatic
ancestry. Rice is extremely sensitive to water shortages.

II. TRAINING RATIONALE

Alternative Wetting and Drying is a water saving technology that lowland (paddy) rice
farmers can apply to reduce their water use in irrigated fields. In AWD, irrigation water is
applied to flood the field a certain number of days after the disappearance of ponded water.
Through these technique, rice farmers can reduce methane emission, cut their pumping
cost and enhance the efficiency of their water use.
The main learning goals of this training is to increase the level of understanding and
awareness of the participants on controlled irrigation.
 Estimate the level of variation in the amounts of water use under farmers practice
and Alternative Wetting & Drying (AWD) method of irrigation;
 Examine the differences in cost involvement and assess the productivity and
profitability of the Alternate Wetting & Drying Method compared to the
conventional methods;
 Describe farmer’s perception on the water saving method and identify ecological
suitable for the new water saving irrigation.

III. TRAINING AUDIENCE

The participants of this training will be composed of Farmers Beneficiaries of different
Irrigators Association who are willing to be the pilot area of Water Saving Technology.

IV. TRAINING FORMAT

The training will be carried out through lecture and group discussion exercises. Also, the
participants will be required to answer the printed Pre & Post Training Knowledge
Inventories (PTKI), and training feedback evaluation forms.

V. TRAINING SCOPE
The training will be held at NIA Sub – Office @ Training Center, Bambad, Isulan, Sultan
Kudarat on May – June 2023.

VIII. TRAINING EVALUATION

The training will be evaluated through the Pre & Post Training Knowledge Inventories
(PTKI) given to the participants. Other than the difference between the scores of the pre
and post - test. Participants are expected to provide actual output from what they have
learned in the training. Outputs are expected to be installed and apply with their respective
rice field and monitored thru data gathering.

IX. TRAINING RELATED SKILLS

The resource speaker for this training shall be a well – equipped professional and had
experience and undergone training of this technology. Other than the Knowledge and skills
that he/she could impart to the participants, and also must have a good moral character.

X. TRAINING RESOURCE NEEDS

To attain the successful execution and completion of the activity, it should have the
following resources:
 One (1) Camera – use for documentation
 Laptop for Secretariat – use for training activities
 One (1) LCD Projector – use for lecture presentation
 One (1) printer (with full tank ink)
 Facility for training area:
a. Training Hall – accommodate maximum 35 attendees
b. Meals – provide one (1) meals with two (1) snack per day

XI. LEARNING GOALS

The NIA - ALA RIS DAM 2 Farmers Beneficiaries of different Irrigators Association are
expected to apply the gained insights and knowledge in their respective rice field. In the
long run, the learning goals of this training are:
 Enhanced the insights, skills and knowledge of water saving or controlled irrigation
 Improve water delivery distribution; and
