Competency: Install non-metallic conduit (PVC) (TVL_IAEI11ET-IIIc-2)
Learner’s Tasks
Bend
The code requires a maximum of four adapter bends (360 degrees) for
every one run of tubing. Non-metallic tubing like PVC can be bend using hickey
after applied enough amount of heat using heat gun on the surface to be bend.
Types of bends
The following illustrations show the different kinds of bends used in the
installation of non-metallic conduit.

90 degree bend
1. Prepare the necessary tools, materials and equipment.
2. Wear appropriate PPE.
3. Draw a right-angle bend on the floor using try square.
4. Draw an arc near the corner.
5. Mark the center of the location of the bend.
6. Gradually apply heat around the marked surface of the PVC using Heat Gun or
Blow Torch.
7. Insert the heated portion of the PVC into the Hickey/bender where the center of
the bend is to be made.
8. Bend the PVC gradually to form a 90 o bend. Check the desired shape by
placing the conduit on the lay-out which can be seen in step 3.
9. Apply the wet rag/cloth to the heated surface to keep the desired bend.
10. Observe good housekeeping.
11. Let your trainer/teacher check your work.
Offset Bend
1. Prepare the necessary tools, materials and equipment.
2. Wear appropriate PPE.
3. Measure the elevated box where the bend is to be fitted.
4. Draw the depth of elevation on the floor. This will make two lines.
5. Mark off 100mm from the end of the pipe.
6. Put another 200mm from your first marker.
7. Gradually apply heat around the marked surface of the PVC using Heat Gun or
Blow Torch.
8. Insert the hickey on the second marker and bend gradually with a backward
stroke to follow its depth.

9. Move the hickey on the first marker and bend gradually with a forward stroke to
follow its height.
10. Remove the hickey.
11. Apply the wet rag/cloth to the heated surface to keep the desired bend.
12. Observe good housekeeping.
13. Let your trainer/teacher check your work.
Activity 1.
Identify the following types of bends. Write your answer on the separate sheet of paper.

Activity 2.
Identify the most appropriate procedure you can apply in the given situation.
1. Mr. J is preparing the necessary tools, materials and equipment for bending a 90o
bend of non-metallic conduit. Considering that he is wearing already his PPE,
what’s the next thing that he will do to complete the process in bending the 90o
bend of PVC?
Activity 3.
Express your thoughts about the question below. Write your answer on a
separate sheet of paper.

Formative Test
3. What bending procedure will you do after you gradually apply heat around the
marked surface of the PVC using Heat Gun or Blow Torch?
A. Remove the hickey.
B. Apply the wet rag/cloth to the heated surface to keep the desired bend.
C. Move the hickey on the first marker and bend gradually with a forward stroke
to follow its height.
D. Insert the hickey on the second marker and bend gradually with a backward
stroke to follow its depth
4. What bending procedure will you do after you measure the elevated box where
the bend is to be fitted?
A. Put another 200mm from your first marker.
B. Mark off 100mm from the end of the pipe.
C. Draw the depth of elevation on the floor. This will make two lines.
D. Gradually apply heat around the marked surface of the PVC using Heat Gun
or Blow Torch.
5. The following are part of bending procedure in bending offset bend, EXCEPT;
A. Put another 200mm from your first marker
B. Mark off 100mm from the end of the pipe.
