1.0 INTRODUCTION

Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG) is seeking to engage the services of a CONTRACTOR to construct a
Wall Retaining Fence at their Pressure Reduction and Metering Station(s) “PRMS”.

1.1 SCOPE
This method statement outlines the procedure and methodology for the Construction of Wall
Retaining Fence in PRMS. This procedure shall be read in conjunction with contract
specifications, Contract Approved Drawings and Project Approved Quality Plan.

2.0 DEFINITIONS & ABBREVIATIONS

3.0 RESPONSIBILITIES

 Project Manager is responsible for overall project execution, quality and safety.
Adopt a leading role with respect to Contractor’s quality and safety procedures. The PM is
responsible for the overall implementation of this method statement. The Project Manager
shall ensure that the key personnel are well aware of the specifications and method
statement.
 SE / Site Engineer shall arrange all materials, equipment, safety related items & manpower
& direct the Site Surveyors & Foremen to resort appropriate action for the smooth execution
of the works.
 HSE Officer shall be responsible for safe working environment & conditions. Coordinate
with Site Engineer to identify potential hazards before works and advice methods of safe
working from new developments.
 SS Site Surveyor shall be responsible for setting out for levels, layout, and lines & establish
top levels. Ensuring setting out books are properly maintained and filed when completed. To
also determining coordinates, levels, and limits where required by site engineer.
 QA/QC Engineer shall be responsible for ensuring that execution of works are complying
with approved method statement and contract specifications/ drawings.

5.0 SPECIFIC TRAINING


All Site personnel will undergo a compulsory Safety Induction to familiarize with company safety rules
and understand risk on the job and how to mitigate against any incident, it is expected that MAMTECH
completes the job without incident.
Operators and all persons involved in the task will be fully briefed.

6.0 MATERIAL HANDLING


All materials to be used will comply with the requirement of the contract specifications. All record of
material supplied to site will be kept safely.
Cement will be stored in a waterproof shaded area. The cement stacks will be placed at a minimum
distance of 300mm from the walls on a wooden support.
The bars will be handled and stored so as to prevent undue bending and accumulation of oil, grease, dirt
or mud. All bars will be cleaned and brushed to remove any oil, grease, dirt, mud, paint, loose scale and
rust or other foreign substances, immediately before use.
All Sharp Sand, Gravels, Boulders will not be dropped in positions to obstruct any operation and not to be
washed away by rain on site.
All rods and wood among others will be stacked off the ground supported by woods.

7.0 PERMITS
All necessary Permit to Work shall be obtained before commencement of work.

8.0 METHODOLOGY

8.1 SITE MEASUREMENT AND LAYOUT MARKING


The Site Surveyor will take the topographical survey of the site to obtain data for the purpose of setting
out as contained in the detailed engineering drawing issued by Shell Nigeria Gas, Safety signal and
Warning tapes will be used to barricade work area against unauthorized personnel.
8.2 ENGINEERING DRAWING

8.3 SITE PREPARATION: BUSH CLEARING AND REMOVAL OF DEBRIS

The entire job site shall be cleared of bushes, debris and earthwork of the work area shall be carried out
manually with shovels so as to create enough space for all site activities.
The initial temporal erosion control materials (Sand Bag or Boulders) if there is any that has deteriorated
alongside debris within the erosion imparted area shall be removed and transfer to a temporary location
and /or dump site as approved by client site representative.

8.4 DEMOLITION
The affected and/or existing structure(s) shall be demolished and cart away of pieces of blocks as well as
any other associated materials while putting all the necessary hazards in consideration with safety
preventive measures.

8.5 MARKING OF GUIDEPOSTS


Setting up gauging stakes shall be done to ensure work is consistently level at all top points.

8.6 PREPARATION OF FOUNDATION

Excavation shall be manually carried out as per approved drawing giving room for construction
allowance.
Sharp sand will be used to fill and level the base to the required level while plate compactor will be used
for compaction.
The Surveyor using a calibrated level instrument shall align and control the level.

Probing of the line with pipe detector will be done to determine if there is any underground facility on the
line. In case of obstruction the Client engineer will advise accordingly.

8.7 BLINDING OF THE TRENCH

Filling in the trench with concrete or mortar for ground beam where the top surface is levelled to
form the underside of a floor slab shall be carried out.

8.8 LAYING OF GROUND BEAM

Ground beam shall be laid to support the brick/block work where they form permanent
shuttering. 

8.9 SETTING AND BONDING/COATING OF SOLID BRICK BLOCKS

Bonding of solid brick blocks shall be done to obtain maximum strength whilst distributing the
loads to be carried throughout the wall, column or pier, ensure lateral stability and resistance to
side thrusts, as well as creating an acceptable appearance.

8.10 SETTING/LAYING OF HOLLOW BRICK BLOCKS


The hollow brick blocks shall be laid using Mortar, Trowel, Concrete blocks as well as other
technical required equipment.

8.11 SETTING/LAYING OF THE UPPER BEAM


After the site preparation and excavation of trenches is completed, then forms will be placed
according to the dimensions of the beam. They shall be reinforced with continuous reinforcement
that is developed within or beyond the supported column, which shall be anchored within the pile
cap or footings.

8.12 COPING OF THE UPPER BEAM


The exposed top of the wall with a layer of stone, bricks, terracotta, or concrete shall be covered
to keep the structure safe from seepage of water during rainfall and bad weather conditions.

8.13 FIXING OF RAZOR WIRES


Razor wire as an effective deterrent, a physical and visual barrier for the protection of property,
site or land shall be fixed.

9.0 SAFETY AND HEALTH

Mamtech’s personnel will comply with all safety rules as contained in the submitted HSE plan for the
project.

10.0 BACKFILLING AND CLEAN UP

After loosing of the formwork, all side of the new Casting shall be backfilled as per contract instructions,
properly compacted.

The site environment shall be cleared of excess construction waste.

While a good housekeeping will be done.

11.0 DEMOBILIZATION
All equipment and tools shall be moved out of the site.
