2. RESPONSIBILITY
2.1. It is responsibility of the Project Manger, together with Site Supervisor, Site Engineer,
QA/QC and ESH personnel to establish successful implementation and maintenance of
these procedures.
3. SCOPE OF WORK
3.1. This procedure outlines the methods to be followed for the open cut cable trench
excavation activity as per approved layout drawings.

4. WORK STANDARDS

4.1. To meet Jabatan Bekalan Elektrik requirement.

4.2. To meet Malaysia legal requirement related to workplace.
5. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

5.1. In general, the main equipment to be used for the erection are listed below: -
 Backhoe
 Truck / Trailer
 Pick-Up

6. MATERIALS USED
The materials used for the installation works shall be in compliance to those approved in
material schedule.

7. INSTALLATION METHOD

7.1. Pre-Installation Checks

 For precaution the area of excavation to be done the mapping for existing services if
applicable.
 The permit of the area shall be received and kept by supervisor before commencement of
the cable trench activity.
 The entire route shall be inspected to ensure that the routing is complete, proper bending
radius to be consider.
 Ensure that last revision approved shop drawings are used.
 Personnel involved in the activity are made aware of the risks and the steps to be taken to
mitigate any hazard or unsafe situation.
7.2. Material withdrawn from warehouse
 Material inspection will be carried out to ascertain that no damage has occurred to the
PN10 pipe.
 The material shall be transported in their original packing to location.
 The PN10 pipe shall be off-loaded at the suitable site location.
 It shall be ensured that there is no obstruction to movement of vehicles or any
hindrance to works of other companies
7.3. Plan for excavation
 This step includes selecting the route and depth we will dig, and determining what tools,
equipment, and materials we will need.
 De-watering on excavation area. This will remove the excess water from the soil to help
stabilize it while working. This can be accomplished either with a well point system or a sock
pipe and mud hog type diaphragm pump to remove the water as it seeps into the
excavation.
7.4. Begin the digging. Line our workers or equipment up with the ditch line and start to dig. Soil
conditions must be carefully observed so that the trench embankments do not yield, allowing
them to cave in.
7.5. Dig our first cut to the depth we have decided is deep enough to serve the ducting, or if the
trench needs to be benched, to the depth of the first bench. If using a piece of equipment such
7.6. as a backhoe or excavator, dig the first trench segment the machine will reach to this depth.
Make subsequent entrenchments to the depth of each bench prior to digging deeper, so the
banks of each bench will remain stable throughout the process.
7.7. Throw, or cast, the spoil (the removed soil) as far from the excavation as possible, so it will not
encumber us while installing the utilities or doing whatever work in the trench it has been dug
for. This will also prevent the removed material from creating an overburdening of the trench's
banks (or sides).
7.8. Move along the length of the trench as each section is excavated to the required depth.
Checking the depth to ensure the finished trench does not require remedial work to make it
usable.
7.9. Continue digging until the whole trench is complete. Recheck the depth of the trench, check the
embankments for stability, and do any smoothing or finished grading of the trench bottom
necessary to allow installing the duct into the trench.
7.10. Install the PN10 Pipe into the trench with layers following approved shop drawing.
7.11. Connecting PN10 pipe with PN10 pipe by using socket each 6 meters.
7.12. Backfill the trench as follow Specification Drawing. For deep trenches, backfilling
7.13. in lifts (layers) and compacting the material as it is placed will reduce the amount of settling
that will occur after the project is completed.
7.14. Re-grade and re-landscape the area after connecting any utilities we have installed if
applicable.
7.15. Safety in Trenches
 All trench work shall comply with Work Safe requirements. They may include but is not
limited to:
 Soil must be piled back from the edge of the pit at least 600mm to confirm to Work Safe
regulations.
 trenches may require shoring if less than 1500mm deep and the soil are unstable.
 Undermining walls, foundations, streets, or pavements are to be avoided otherwise
proper shoring is required.
 All shoring, benching, and sloping must be installed to Work Safe requirements and its
Code of Practice: Excavation.
 Barriers shall be erected to prevent vehicles inadvertently falling into the excavation.
 Collapse or flooding of trenches
 Lack of ventilation or suitable lighting.
 Dangerous gases.
 Confined working space.
 High temperatures.
 Traffic hazards

8. TESTING
Not applicable.
