1.0 OBJECTIVES

Pipe jacking is a technique of installing underground pipelines, ducts and culverts. It consists of
jacking specially designed pipes through the ground behind a jacking shield with hydraulic jacks.
The method provides a flexible and structurally sound finished pipeline. Pipe jacking is an
economical alternative to open trench works as well as to other forms of tunneling and is practically
useful in limiting the risk of surface settlement.

2.0 SCOPE OF WORK

The scope of work covers the laying of VCP pipes and construction of pre-cast manhole
chamber from the toilet areas to the external manholes and including connection to the
existing IWK’s manhole on the main road for ASE Plant 4 & 5 Project.

4.0 MATERIAL HANDLING AND STORAGE

a) In general, all the construction materials shall be planned and delivered near to the
workplace to avoid double handling.
b) All Materials to be used for construction shall be of approved type prior to delivery to site.
Correct or suitable machine shall be used during loading and unloading the material.
c) All pipe stacks shall be made on sufficiently firm, flat ground to support the weight of the pipes and the
necessary lifting equipment.
d) The stacking of material at the work areas shall not block any access.

5.0 WORK SEQUENCE AND CONSTRUCTION METHODOLOGY

5.1 Survey Setting Out

a) The relevant shop drawing shall be studied to identify the required pipeline alignment to be installed.
b) The Survey Control Points, typically the building / block corner pegs are determined by the Main Con
Site Surveyor. The location of these points shall be sited at a place unlikely to be disturbed and are
clearly marked using timber pegs with nail head to indicate the precise position of control point.
c) The required pipe routing and manhole position shall then be marked/pegged out at site in accordance
with the approved shop drawings.

5.2 External Sewerage Jacking Shaft Work

a) Prior start work ensures received latest Shop Drawing.
b) Any shop drawing shall be submitting for approval before start work.
c) All activities shall be planned before work and coordinated with Main Contractor.
d) The area of the shaft will be checked for service using cable/pipe detector.
e) Shaft position will be determined and set out onsite.
f) Unload and handling material near to working area by Backhoe/Excavator.
g) Before commencing any works, need to confirm the working area safe to work.
h) Traffic management will be installed in accordance with approved drawings.
i) Trial holes will be carried out to prove utility service locations
j) When necessary, diversion of utility services will be carried out in advance of the shaft construction.
k) When a to i and j (if necessary) has been completed, then construction of the shaft will commence as
follows: -
1) The external size of the shaft will be cut using a diamond cutter
2) The ground surface will then be broken out using heavy breaker or an excavator fitted with a hydraulic
breaker. (If needed)
3) Excavation will then take place to a depth from surface level or over this area. The excavation will be
trimmed vertically layer by layer. All excavated material will be loaded onto dump truck and removed to
site dumping area.
4) Immediately upon completion of excavation layer by layer, the caisson unit will be lowered into the
excavation layer by layer. Once in position the caisson unit will be set level and checked by the surveyors.
5) As the caisson sinks timber wedges are inserted and remove as necessary to maintain verticality of the
shaft being constructed. Any minor corrections required can be affected by adding weight to any high
points as sinking continues. This is usually implanted using minimal effort with the excavator bucket the
weight being applied through large timber chocks. As the top of the second caisson unit sinks to within
300mm of ground level the third caisson unit is added in the same manner as the second.
6) To ensure that the shaft is water tight, swellable water stop will be installed and cement mortar will be
applied on the top of each caisson key before the subsequent caisson is lowered into place.
7) The process continues until the caisson reaches the required level. Throughout the entire sinking
process, a constant check is kept on the verticality of the shaft by monitoring the level of the top unit is
place. Depth of excavation is balanced to suit the speed at which the caisson sinks throughout the process.
8) A plug of muck will be maintained within the caisson to ensure it does not sink faster than required.
Each caisson will be assessed to ensure it does not sink faster than required. Each caisson will be assessed
on a continual and individual basis as construction progresses.
9) Once the caisson unit has reached its final depth the bottom of excavation bottom will be trimmed and

blinded at the required level. The reinforcement for the structural concrete base will then be fixed and the
based poured
10) If micro tunnelling or pipe jacking is to be carried out immediately / not done immediately. Plastic
barrier will be placed around the top of the shaft and traffic management will be kept. This action will
only be carried out absolutely necessary.
11) After the micro tunnelling / pipe jacking work has been completed, inspection will be carried out for
all caisson joints to ensure no leakage / seepage of water. Then the permanent manhole will be constructed
from the bottom and up to the surface. Water plug mortar plug will be applied on joint area if water
leakage /seepage are detected.
12) Upon completion of manhole cover installation, the road surface will be reinstated
o) Clear & remove all the debris at the work area.

5.2 External Sewerage Pipe Work

a) Prior start work ensures received latest Shop Drawing.
b) Any shop drawing shall be submitting for approval before start work.
c) All activities shall be planned before work and coordinated with Main Contractor.
d) Check and mark out the position of Sewerage Location base on approved Shop Drawing. Main
Contractor, client representative should be buying off actual sewerage location prior start work.
e) Unload and handling material near to working area by Backhoe/Excavator.
f) Before commencing any works, need to confirm the working area safe to work.
h) Stage 1 - pilot tubes are advanced in approximately one (1) meter section through the ground by jacking.
The pilot tubes are rotated to achieve steering by use of an angle shoe at the front. Friction and heat in the
string of pilot tubes are reduced with fluid (drilling mud) injection. Positional monitoring is achieved
using a theodolite.
i) During the process the pilot tubes installed in stage 1 are pushed out progressively into the reception /
receiving pit.
h) Stage 2 (reaming stage) - the pilot tubes are displaced into the reception / receiving pit by an enlarging
open ended casing driven by rotational motor on the jacking rig. Casing section are added in
approximately one (1) meter sections and jacked forwards by the jacking frame. The process continues
until the casing pushes out the final section of pilot tube into the reception / receiving pit.
i) Stage 3 involves pushing RCJP or VCJP pipe from the reception / receiving end. The temporary casing
are pushed out followed by RCJP or VCJP pipe. Stage 3 is omitted where the RCJP or VCJP pipe is
installed directly as part of stage 2. Subject to suitable ground conditions the method can achieve a high
degree of positional accuracy and is therefore suitable for gravity sewer installations as well as pressure
pipes. During this stage the RCJP or VJP pipe is attached to an adapter.
j) Water will continuous pump out from the pit so that sludge can remove out and has clear sight for
working (If needed).
