Introduction
The following structural calculations report demonstrates the Structural Engineering principals used
in the design of the project with the Building Regulations 2000 Structure - Approved Document (A).

Codes of Practice
The design of the structure will be carried out in accordance with the following codes of practice:
 Loading (BS6399) Part 1 (1996) Dead and Imposed Loads
Part 2 (1997) Wind Loads
 Concrete (BS8110)
 Timber (BS5258)
 Steel work (BS5950)
 Masonry (BS5628)

Design philosophy
All structural members are designed to be capable of withstanding all the applied loadings during
construction, operation and maintenance of the building without any distress, failure, loss of
function, damage or durability problems. They are to support the most onerous combinations of
dead, imposed, and wind loads tending to produce either maximum ultimate stresses or deflection.
Building Robustness for lateral stability and resistance against disproportionate collapse is to be
achieved according to guidelines of Approved Document(A), through providing sufficient vertical
lateral restraint to walls, lateral support by floors and roof, wall ties, restrain straps, etc., along with
making sure of connections ductility to dissipate energy arising from unexpected accidental event.

Standard loads
Standard imposed loads
Residential floor 1.50 kN/m²
Roof (With access) 1.50 kN/m²
Roof (With no access) 0.60 kN/m²

Standard dead loads (otherwise calculated)

Timber floor 0.50 kN/m²
Timber floor (With Partitions) 1.00 kN/m²
Pitched roof (With Tiles) 0.80 kN/m²
Flat roof 0.60 kN/m²

Standard dead loads break-down

Timber floor (With partitions) 1.00 kN/m²
Timber joists + Boarding 0.20 kN/m²
Insulation (18mm) 0.07 kN/m²
Ceiling (Plasterboard) 0.13 kN/m²
Services 0.10 kN/m²
Partitions 0.50 kN/m²

Pitched roof 0.80 kN/m²

Roof Tiles 0.40 kN/m²
Timber Rafters + Battens 0.20 kN/m²
Plasterboard Finish + Insulation 0.20 kN/m²

Flat roof 0.60 kN/m²

3 Layers bitumen roofing felt 0.15 kN/m²
Timber joists + boarding 0.20 kN/m²
Ceiling finish 0.17 kN/m²
100mm thick hard Insulation 0.08 kN/m²

Load Combinations
Loads are combined in all valid combinations of adverse and beneficial effects to obtain the most
onerous load condition. The Load combinations used are summarized below.
 1.4 DL + 1.6 LL
 1.2 DL + 1.2 LL + 1.2 WL
 0.9 DL + 1.4 WL
 DL + 1.0 LL + 1.0 WL

Building control approval

The Owners of the property are advised that an approval of the Calculations and Drawings by the
Local Authority Building Control should be obtained prior to any fabrication or ordering of materials.
No liability is accepted for any changes that may be required as a result of work having commenced
prior to such an approval having been obtained.

Important notes for the builder/contractor

 BEAM SPANS SHOWN WITHIN THIS DOCUMENT ARE TO BE USED FOR CALCULATION PURPOSES
ONLY. DO NOT ORDER ANY STEEL OR TIMBER WORKS BASED ON THESE DIMENSIONS.
 All spans and dimensions must be double-checked on-site by the contractor/fabricator prior to
construction or ordering materials. Any discrepancies are to be reported to the Engineer
IMMEDIATELY.
 These calculations are to be used in conjunction with all relevant Architects’ drawings and
specifications.
 The Planning and installation of all temporary works and the stability of the structure during
construction is the sole responsibility of the contractor.
 All Steel Beams supported on block/brick Walls are to sit on spreader plates or padstones as
 specified. If a padstone is not specified, report back to the Structural Engineer IMMEDIATELY.
