CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM AND ITS

BACKGROUND

As a category of online discourse, social media has exploded. People

now create content there and share and bookmark it. And network
incredibly quickly. Social media is rapidly altering society because of its
accessibility, rapidity, and reach. Creating trends and agendas in
themes ranging from politics and the environment in public discourse to
the entertainment industry and technology.
In the previous ten years, the online has significantly changed as a result
of the development of social media, with young people now exchanging
ideas, at genuinely remarkable rates, people are sharing their thoughts,
identities, photos, and videos.
Determining how social media is affecting students' school achievement
is essential in the modern world. The younger generations are those
who are being caught up in this quick transformation as technology
continues to grow rapidly year after year. To determine whether or not
social media has an impact on students' academic performance,
questionnaires were distributed via Facebook and emails. The results
show that there is no connection between social media use and
academic achievement, and their aggregate grade average makes this
conclusion very evident. Mike Moran, Jeff Seaman and Hester Tinti-
Kane, for a long period of time believed that the term social media does
not have a clear definition, however, when one platform emerged, that
gave people an opportunity to be content creators, controllers and
transparent users, to a great extent. Once this content is shared, it
becomes a conversation, because all users who have accounts on
social media platforms can interact with all posts (Moran, Seaman and
Tinti-Kane, 2011). Social Networking is “the act of engagement,” while
social media is the tool used to communicate with mass audience
(Hartshorn, 2010). Social Media is the platform that give individuals the
opportunity to interact, using two-way communication; meaning, that
anyone who has online accounts can share their opinions with other
social media users. There are two types of social media users; digital
natives and digital immigrants. Digital natives are the ones who were
born after 1980, they came to this world when the digital media existed.
However, digital immigrants are the ones who were born before 1980
and adapted their lives to digital media (Anton Son and Christopher,
2014). Social media platforms vary from Web blogs, to micro-sharing
platforms, to life streams to social networks and much more (Anton Son
and Christopher, 2014). The younger generation discussed in this

research paper are school students between the ages of 12 to 19 years

old. A few of the platforms they use are Facebook, YouTube, Google,
and many others that will be discussed in the findings of this research.
The younger generation are the individuals that will lead our world in the
future, they must be well educated to be able to impact this world and
make Egypt a better country on the road to success. Therefore,
research must be conducted about the different things they are exposed
to, that may affect them negatively or positively. This research aims to
assess the frequency at which the students are social networking, and
whether it has any effect on their academic performance. If there is an
impact on their academic performance, in what way does it effect it. All
these questions will be answered through this research paper. Social
media has been utilized in so many different ways throughout the years.
Egypt is known to be one of the heavy users of social media, specifically
Facebook. It dominates 25% of the total MENA region, having almost 11
million users, even though the penetration rate is only about 13%. In the
first six months of the year 2012, Egypt had an additional 1,608,420
users on Facebook, which is the highest number in the MENA region.
Luke Richards stated that 46% of Egyptian social media users believe
that social media has great influence in empowering them to change
their country (Richards, 2012). According to Dr. Anthony Curtis, in 2014,
there is about 1.28 billion Facebook users and 255 million Twitter users,
55 million of the Facebook users and 3.7 million of the Twitter users are
from the Arab world (Curtis, 2013). This research aims at measuring the
impact of social media on the younger generation’s academic
performance; therefore, this paper is structured in the following order:
the literature review outlining previous research conducted on university
students and high-school students outside of Egypt. Following with the
research methodology and the results obtained from the distribution of
the questionnaires; followed by the discussion that will answer the
suggested hypotheses of the paper. The final part will be the conclusion
and the limitations of this study.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK:

This paper is guided by the theory of Lev Vygotsky about constructivism

or constructivist theory. Lev Vygotsky’s is a Russian Psychologist, who
stresses the importance of looking at each child as an individual who
learns distinctively or different from another. The overall goal of
education according to Vygotsky is to generate and lead development
which is the result of social learning through internalization of culture
and social relationship. With…show more content… The students today
have been labeled as Digital Natives by (Pesky, 2001) because
according to him “they spent their entire lives surrounded by and using
computers, videogames, video cams, digital music players, cell phones
and all the other toys and tools of the digital age.” A report from Pew
Research Center (2010) revealed that 73% of the teenagers (meaning
they are students) use some form of social networking by incorporating
social media into the lives of the students in the…show more content…
It represents as a useful tool mainly for education and communication.
also, it helps students to multitask because of their demanding class
schedule; they are not preferred on creating multiple messages for
individual because for them it is time consuming. Instead they use
Facebook and emails to do such thing for their classmates, friends and
even family. Like most of the students did, when the discussion inside
the classroom ends, they can continue their conversations through
group chat that all of the students in a class are intact in that kind of
social media. In group page, it is use to posts and share lectures for the
sake of all and especially for other students who missed classes and
serves as a group study session or commonly known as group
discussion. On the other hand, when it comes to the get the public
opinion when the students have projects and some certain issue to be
display on public they can extend the discussion or forum and activities
to the public only to find out what peers think about it and their opinion,
suggestion or feedback towards that issue.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK:

Philippines. Apart from this is the conceptualization of other appropriate
content about it such as advantages/disadvantages, effects/causes and
knowledge to prevent this situation.
The input includes the part 1 demographic profile of the
respondent with the age, sex, civil status and educational attainment.
Part 2 performance of the respondents in the use of social media. Part 3
the reason for having the social media dilemma. Part 4 details or
information about social media. And part 5 the existence of too much
use of this kind of technology.
As process, the researcher collects the data of the respondent’s
profile. We also study the best possible question for this research. Next
is to conduct or prepared the questionnaires. Followed by arrangements
of the respondent’s reaction. Then perform the scientific treatment and
interpretation and finally the statistical analysis of the data.
As Output, we want to have specific knowledge about it and to
present the data we want our readers to gather. The researchers also
give the different answers to the questions that are possible troubling in
social media. And finally, the researchers want to extent of participation
of some students and readers in the awareness about adverse effect of
social media.
The feedback is part of the conceptual paradigm that will lead to
analysis the study.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

FOREIGN
RELATED STUDIES

Rouis, Limayem, & Salehi-Sangari (2011) investigate the effects of using

Facebook on academic performance of undergraduate students at Lulea
University of Technology Sweden in relation to their personality traits.
The proposed research model tests how Facebook usage effects
performance of students with different personality traits. In addition the
research tries to justify the relationship among the three i.e. Facebook
usage, personality traits and academic performance. Their analysis of
239 students’ data reveals very significant results. This research
establishes that using Facebook has strong negative impact on
academic performance of students with extrovert personalities.
However, factor of self-regulation among students greatly reduces this
negative impact as they have high level of effective self-control while
using social media platforms. Cognitive absorption, which defines extent
of deep involvement, is another personality factor taken into
consideration while undertaking this research.
Junco, R. (2012) investigates the impact of Facebook being a social
medium on students’ performance on academic courses. The research
analyzes data from 1839 respondents studying 4 years degrees in
residential institutes of northeastern USA to find trends on frequency of
Facebook visits and activities, time spent on Facebook, time spent on
class preparation and academic grades of the students under research.
Analysis of the collected data reveals that time spent on Facebook and
frequency of visiting Facebook are negatively related to students’
performance in terms of their GPA. However, there is slightly negative
correlation between time spent on this widely used social medium and
the time spend in studying for class. He further adds that although time
spent on social media and academic performance are negatively
correlated but, this relationship in real world scenarios does not seem to
be a major hurdle in academic success.

Over the past decade, Pew Research Center has documented the wide
variety of ways in which Americans use social media to seek out
information and interact with others. A majority of Americans now say
they get news via social media, and half of the public has turned to
these sites to learn about the 2016 presidential election. Americans are
using social media in the context of work (whether to take a mental
break on the job or to seek out employment), while also engaging in an
ongoing effort to navigate the complex privacy issues that these sites
bring to the forefront.
Facebook continues to be the most popular social media site, but its
membership saw little change from 2013. The one notable exception is
older adults: For the first time in Pew Research findings, more than half
(56%) of internet users ages 65 and older use Facebook. Overall, 71%
of internet users are on Facebook, a proportion that represents. Every
other social media platform measured saw significant growth between
2013 and 2014. Instagram not only increased its overall user figure by
nine percentage points, but also saw significant growth in almost every
demographic group. LinkedIn continued to grow among groups with
which it was already popular, such as professionals and college
graduates, while Twitter and Pinterest saw increases in usership across
a variety of demographic groups.

With the use of social media students can easily search materials for
their homeworks or projects, can contact their classmates for group
works even if they are at home, and they can use it to research topics
that they find difficult (Brannan, 2014). Not only is it useful for the
students but it is also efficient as a learning tool for the teachers. Yet,
however helpful and efficient the use of social media is, it also has its
downside. As mentioned, social media and its different platforms gave
way for education to be efficient for the students but some students who
fail to find balance with the use of it face difficulty in their studies as it
increases students’ distraction thus being detrimental to students’
performance (Jacobsen & Forste, 2011; Mythily, Qiu, & Winslow, 2008).
While these two studies have agreed on how social media and internet
usage affect one’s education, both have different results when it comes
to the exploration of social media’s relationship to one’s social
environment and relationships

Marine litter is a global threat to marine biodiversity. However, there is a

key knowledge gap on the impacts of marine litter in the Philippines – a
country of high marine biodiversity and large exclusive economic zone.
This gap is addressed here by using information shared on the internet
by citizen scientists and conservation groups to assess the impacts of
marine litter on megafauna. Facebook, presently the largest social
media platform, was scanned for posts concerning the interaction
between litter and marine species in the Philippines. Results showed
thirty-two individuals from 17 species were affected by marine litter in
the country. Furthermore, ingestion (61%) was the most frequent
interaction reported. Mindanao was also identified as a hotspot for
marine litter interactions. The study highlights the utility of social media
in providing data to create an inventory of marine species adversely
affected by litter and the spatial distribution of these interactions.
Through interviews with journalists from four top online newsrooms in
the Philippines, this study examined the organizational arrangements
surrounding social media teams and how these influence social media
being incorporated into journalism decisions. Organizations considered
audience preferences in their editorial decisions, but they depended on
arrangements surrounding social media teams. Some organizational
arrangements included inclusion of social media editors in story

Specifically, we will see the methods of how the data was gathered,
instruments that was used and the data that have been collected will be
summed up.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The purpose of this Case study is to know the impact of social media or
new media in our education institutions and society today are
undoubtedly overwhelming. Students in the developed and developing
countries are becoming more addicted to social media and its
applications for various reasons. These reasons can lead to change in
social and personal lifestyle both academically and off-academic. This
study aims to assess the impact of social media on a total of 8 students
in St. John Technological College of the Philippines. The study deployed
a qualitative research methodology involving questionnaire research
instrument among the 8 students in the SJTCP. The findings include the
followings; social media refines how students think, interact, explore,
their social lifestyle and many more.

RESPONDENTS

The respondents of our study are the grade 12 students. A total of 8

students in St. John technological college of the Philippines (SJTCP).
The respondents are Stem A, Stem B, FBS and Gas because they
already experience the factors that the researchers had mentioned
earlier in this study.

RESEARCH LOCALE

This study was conducted at St. John Technological College of the

Philippines this place is selected for knowing the life experiences in
social media of student of SJTCP, The STJCP constitute senior high
and colleges and offer four strands, which are the Academic and
Technical Vocational tracks. Science Technology Engineering and

services (FBS), And in college courses they offered under engineering
courses are, Bachelor of science in electrical engineering (BSEE),
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical engineering (BSME) and Bachelor of
science in Computer Engineering (BSCpE) and Bachelor of science in
Electronics Engineering (BSECE). This school is located at 29 Jewel St.
Forest Hills Subdivision Gulod, Novaliches Quezon City, 1117

SAMPLE AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

In addition, the sample for this case study are the grade 12 STEM, 12
GAS, 12 AUTO/FBS students of St. John Technological College of the
Philippines.
The sampling technique used in this study is purposive sampling. The
researchers chose purposive sampling because it allows them to gather
qualitative responses, which leads to better insights and more precise
research results. Because the researcher collects information from the
best-fit participants, the results are relevant to the research context.
The researchers chose them to be the sample for this case study
because they believe that the STEM, GAS, AUTO/FBS students will be
able to know their perspectives and answers the questions honestly
regarding the topic.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researchers used the research instrument in the study to gather

information from the respondents that have been chosen. The survey
was used as the main data gathering instrument. The instrument that
have been prepared is focused on answering the statement of the
problem. The good and bad effects, advantages and disadvantages of
social media for the students. The survey contain 9 questionnaires and
the survey link will be distributed to the respondents thru messenger.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURES

The researchers established a questionnaire checklist, authenticated by

the adviser of the subject then the questionnaire checklist are
disseminated. The researchers conduct the research in St John

students through survey because of the edge of the survey method. The
researchers used open ended questions so that cannot be answered
with a plain 'yes' or 'no' and instead requires the respondent to be
detailed on their point, in order to gather data. The questionnaire was
based on the researcher’s idea about possible experience that was
given to the respondents through google forms. The researchers explain
to the respondents the extreme importance of their answer for this study.
The researchers illuminate some words to the interviewee so that they
can answer the survey with full understanding and honesty of their
authority as the subject of this study. After the respondents answered
the questionnaire, the researchers contributed and tallied the data for
interpretation. There is a total of 8 selected students who answered the
survey and they answered it well. Lastly, the researchers organize the
information and the data gathered.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter provides a presentation of the results, analysis, and

interpretation of data gathered from the answers to the
questionnaires distributed to the field. The said data were displayed
in tabular form following the specific questions posted in the
statement of the problem.

Problem 1: what is the demographic profile of the Respondents?

the first problem of this study focused on the profile of the

selected grade 12 students at st John Technological College of the
Philippines who our respondents.

1.1: Age of the respondents.

as shown in table 1, those who are respondents to this survey are not
far between the ages of 16 to 18 years old. Of the 100% who
answered, 50% of them were 16-17 years old and 50% were also 17-
18 years old. Also in this table, there is a frequency with a total of 4
and both sides get 2 points for it. Therefore both of our respondents
are corresponding at the age of 16 to 18 years old who answered our
questionnaire.

questionnaire. Of the 100% who answered, 50% of them are male
and 50% of them are female.

the result 50% of female and 50% of male respondent are used
social media.

1.3: Strand of the respondents.

As shown in table 3, we have eight respondents that is equal to

100%. Each strand has two respondents. In 100% respondents, 25%
of those are Stem A, similarly to Stem B, also Gas and Auto/fbs,
every strand has the same number of respondents.

CONCLUSION. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS SHOULD ONLY INCLUDE
THE SHORT EXPLANATION OF YOUR TOPIC, RESPONDENTS,
LOCALE, RESEARCH DESIGN, AND PROCESS OF GATHERING
DATA OR INFORMATION TO COMPLETE YOUR RESEARCH.

The total of 8 selected students from SJTCP have had access to the
internet through their smartphones. Expectations in using technology for
students are meet through the way of their education and self
improvement but unwanted results had risen up. Despite of the
advantages here comes the disadvantages impact of social media that

29 | P a g e
St. John Technological College of the Philippines
29 Jewel St. Forest Hill Subd., Gulod Novaliches Quezon City

affects not only the students school performance but also their
relationship with others, mental, physical, and emotional health, this is
due to the influence of social media to them because it is a place for
free thoughts on anyissue about political, education and etc. Youth
tends to have a different point of view inlife especially that affects their
attitude. It is an alarming aspect because it comes out that students are
not aware about the results of too much usage of social media. Youth
are more prone to danger because of social media thus especially now
that most of the people thinks that they can play a positive role in
changing our society.

CONCLUSION:

Social media is a tremendously valuable and important communication

network for all people in today's world. It can be used to stay in touch with
and get to know people who are from various nations. People can express
their ideas to us, and we can act on them immediately, thus everything
develops swiftly since we can exchange our ideas so quickly. We may
perhaps discover new things by viewing or reading the stuff that people
posted on social media. Furthermore, anyone might offer products for free
on social media, which could lower the cost of marketing.

Social media use has more advantages, but everything has advantages
and disadvantages. The majority of people rarely even need to "speak out"
in order to communicate with others because to social media's
extraordinary simplicity. People won't any longer be unable to converse.
The more serious problem is that a lot of people bullied others online. The
power of social media is equal to that of traditional media. Some of them
used social media to participate in unlawful activity, which is reckless.

Our way of life has been significantly changed by social media.

Social media can help us learn more effectively in school and also improve
our personal life by making them more convenient. But we need to be
careful with how we use them. If we can utilize social media responsibly, it
will be a beneficial improvement for us.

RECOMMENDATION:

The recommendation for this research is to establish clear guidelines for

online conduct and provide young people with resources to handle
problems.

Beyond broad usage guidelines, it's crucial to discuss specific behaviors

you wish to promote and discourage in young people. For instance, if
you're a parent, you presumably don't want your kid posting naked images
online. You might like some websites or applications while disliking
others. You can discuss what constitutes cyberbullying and why it is
unacceptable. It's crucial to address who young people can turn to if they
encounter it firsthand or witness it.It's crucial to discuss fundamental
aspects of internet privacy and safety, such as how to safeguard personal
data and deal with online strangers. Describe your worries, then listen. Be
honest be transparent about your identity. When appropriate, indicate that
your opinions are personal. If you choose to identify yourself in social
media, be clear that the views expressed are yours, that those views may
not reflect the senior high school students views, and that you are not
authorized to speak. Additionally Be careful and confidential, Protect your
identity. Be honest about yourself, but don’t provide personal information
that scam artists or identity could use against you or be aware of your
audience and be civil, respectful, and sensitive about the content you
create or share
