Festival/client research:

Raindance film festival is the largest independent film festival in the entire UK. It held
its 30th festival in 2022 and it is based in the heart of London's west end film district.
It is officially recognised by the academy of motion picture arts and sciences USA
and many other such awards and selected shorts will qualify for bafta and Oscar
considerations. Each year Raindance festival attracts 16,000 visitors including 500
industry professionals into London.

To enter the deadline for the autumn 2023 is the 8th May and the shorts fee is 37
pound or the feature fee is 72 pound short films have to be under 45 mins to enter
and they must be one of the following:
. Narrative Feature
. Documentary Feature
. Music Documentary Feature
. Narrative Short
. Documentary Short Animation Short
. Queer (Feature)
. Immersive Experiences – Virtual and Augmented Reality Narrative Experiences,
.Documentaries, Live VR Performances, Immersive Games and Immersive worlds
on social VR platforms

The prize if you win the competition is prestige of getting invited to other
competitions like the baftas and the Oscars also there can be a cash prize if you
win.
I have chosen this festival as it is fairly local fits with the deadline and also the main
thing is that my production will fit the rules and requirements of entering with ease.
Project concept:
My final idea is a Drama short film on gambling addictions the target
audience should be 16-25 year olds as I found they would be the most
effected by watching a film on this topic and genre.. It will have two
characters one who is the main character Jack and one who is the main
characters lifelong friend and work colleague Bill, Bill starts gambling and tells
Jack about it and then jack starts doing it as well. After this they both lose
Money and Bill does not show up to work and tells Jack to meet him after
work as he has sorted out a poker night. When they are on their way to the
poker night it is revealed that Bill took the money he is using from his girlfriend.
They both go and Jack keeps winning and winning over a few days until Bill
gets distressed and leaves after he has lost so much money. Jack carries on
playing and ignores the fact he is distressed. It is then the next morning and
Jack gets a message whilst he is getting ready saying that Bill has killed
himself and he breaks down. It is then Jack at therapy saying about how
websites like that should not exist. The whole film is being narrated by Jack as
we find out at the end is because he is telling his therapist what happened.
Rules and regulations:
The rules and regulations for this are quite easy to follow. For example, for the
competition rules it must be a short film, animation or documentary that is no
longer than forty minutes. It must not be too explicit or over excessive
swearing and must also be suitable for most ages. It must also include:
- Quality of narrative and production values.
- Independent nature of the production.

As for the rules and regulations of submitting to the deadline of our class it is
basically the same. Can not have excessive violence, excessive swearing and
can also not be flagged as something that someone might think they should
check up on the producer. Basically, everything in moderation and you will easily
be eligible.

Legal and Ethical issues:

Since my film is on gambling addiction that means that it is quite relevant
subject to talk about but can be relatable to many people who watch my
production. So, with this in mind I made sure that I made my production as
realistic and as truthful as possible to not offend or mis inform people. I did this
by using my research developing the characters. For example, I took younger
people and people that live a boring life as that’s what I found in my
research is the biggest hooks to gambling people being bored and wanting
to feel the rush. The rush is what keeps people going so I mention that a lot
throughout my production. I also made sure that I didn’t make it look like
something that you should do to win a lot of money as I show the two sides of
it the person that might win a lot (Jack) or the person who can descend to
darkness and start losing his money and taking others (Bill). Since it is an issue, I
made sure that my film also informed people so at the beginning I put a fact
about the amount of people who get an addiction to gambling. I then also
informed them about the UK government putting in a law/plan to lower the
harm gambling can have just so people can spread it around. I also had to
be careful to not use an actual website or betting app just so I don’t end up
making A hate film on certain websites as then I could get my video taken
down or get in a lawsuit from a rich big company. I would say that my movie
does have a positive impact as it spreads awareness and also spreads the
awareness on what you should do and also to see the signs of someone who
is suffering with a gambling addiction.
Target audience:
I have chosen my target audience to be 16–25-year-olds as I feel like they
would enjoy the film but more importantly they will be more informed and
learn more from the film than any other age group so I thought it would be
relevant towards them the most. I thought this because you can start
gambling at 18 but you would want to see the effects it can have on
someone before you get tempted into starting to do it otherwise you might
be unsafe doing it so it means that people can be informed before they start.
Also, younger people I found in a study are more reckless when they are 16-
25 rather then when they are older so they might be more willing to start
something like gambling and bet more amounts of money even when they
lose a lot of it.
