7
Issues with the existing system

Ɣ Scaling
± Acid-cleaning system installed, parallel lines provided
± Increase Chemical (acid) cleaning
± Backup lime slurry line
Ɣ Need redundant train/system for peak demands
Ɣ Better control on lime dosage

8
Alternatives – new feed point (8 mgd)
Ɣ Alternative 1: Retrofit Existing
± Two (2) larger dissolving tanks
± Upsize the piping
± Two (2) new jet pumps
± Continue using acid cleaning system
± No modifications to silo

Alternatives – new feed point (4-8 mgd)
Ɣ Alternative 2: New High Density Lime System (30%)
± Two (2) new bin activators
± Two (2) inclined conveyors
± Two (2) weigh-batch systems
± Two (2) transfer pumps
± One (1) day tank
± Three (3) metering pumps
± No modifications to silo

Alternative evaluation criteria

Ɣ Eliminate lime scale build –up in the slurry lines

Ɣ Improve the method of lime dispensing
Ɣ Eliminate the acid washing system
Ɣ Reuse of existing
g equipment
q p where possible
p
Ɣ Provide redundancy
Ɣ Be cost (capital + O&M) effective

11
Advantages

Alternative 1(Retrofit) Alternative 2 (High Density Lime)

± Less capital cost (about half ± Reduces operational costs by about
the cost of high density 10%
system) ± Reduce scaling without acid cleaning
± Reuse of existing equipment ± Redundancyy
± Acid cleaning may minimize ± Better method of lime dispersion and
scaling calibration with mass flow/density
± Familiarity with the system flow meters
± Improved reliability of the system

12
High/Low Density Lime Comparison
Mixer for batch tank: Mixer for batch tank:
Mixer for batch tank only runs when batching and then Mixer for batch tank must run continuous if
every say 6 hrs for 30 minutes. slurry is in tank.
The HDLS system will have 2 ½ times more lime in
suspension and does not require continuous operation Mixer for the holding/aging tanks:
as stated above. Must run continuous 24/7

Mixer for the holding/aging tanks: Pumping to Treatment Trains:

Runs 30 minutes every 6 hours or after say 2-3 batches Must pump enough slurry to feed the
have been transferred from mix tank treatment trains plus enough slurry to always
maintain the return slurry loop at 2.5’/sec
p g to Treatment Trains:
Pumping
Requires two (2) metering pumps for a two (2) train The low density system must continue to
system and can be stopped for several hours without pump at the maximum rate even if one train is
flushing the system shut down. These systems if being shut down
for any period of time must be flushed.
Metering pumps are metering to the treatment trains
either one train or two trains. High Density systems can
be shut down for up to 3-4 days without flushing the
lines.
Note: Not recommend but it can be done. The
combined hp for two (2) high density slurry pumps will
always be less than a recirculation loop slurry pump
and in many installations one train may be shut down
for several months during the fall and winter.

Specifics - High density lime (35%)
Ɣ 35% slurry acts as a pseudo plastic and will not settle or
scale pipelines
Ɣ 35% slurry has a viscosity of 200 cps . Tomato juice is
180 cps
Ɣ Size metering pumps with a 30:1 turn-down.
Ɣ Size slurryy p
piping
p g with a min velocity
y of 2 fps
p and max of 4
fps.
Ɣ Low grade hydrated lime contains higher silica causing
pump and meter wear.
Ɣ Less water required (compared to 18%) to produce a high
density slurry.
Ɣ No heat of reaction in the hydration process (safety)

15
No settling at concentrations >20%

High Density System Advantages

Ɣ Cost effective and reduced downtime

Ɣ Better calibration with mass flow/density flow meters
Ɣ Minimized scaling
Ɣ Equipment size reduction
Ɣ Energy efficient
Ɣ Lower water use
Ɣ Consistent slurry density
Ɣ Elimination of acid cleaning of slurry lines
Ɣ Low maintenance
Ɣ Reliable

26
Maintenance of plant operations during
construction
Ɣ No shutdowns
Ɣ One lime feed system may be out of service at a time
Ɣ Lime silo must be emptied before existing bin activators can be removed
Ɣ After new treatment train is operational-remove existing lime feed point from service-connect new
lime slurry pipe to existing feed point
