Content Standard: The learners demonstrate an understanding of…
1. How cells divide to produce new cells;
2. Meiosis as one of the processes producing genetic variations of the Mendelian Pattern of Inheritance.
Performance Standard: Report on the importance of variation in plant and animal breeding.

And in telophase? chromosomes are surrounded

by new nuclear membranes,
completing the nuclear division
process known as karyokinesis.
After karyokinesis the
cytoplasmic division occur
which is called cytokinesis,
splitting the cell into two.

B. Engage (Motivation)
Now that you already know what is mitosis, the first stage of mitotic
phase. You also learned the processes included in the mitosis. Now let
us learn about the meiosis phase.

Meiosis - also called reduction division, division of a

germ cell involving two fissions of the nucleus and giving rise to
four gametes, or sex cells, each possessing half the number of
chromosomes of the original cell.
Meiosis I -starts with this stage and includes the following substages:
leptotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene, and diakinesis.
Meiosis II -The second meiotic division forms four daughter cells, each
carrying haploid number of chromosomes. This consists of the following
stages, namely, prophase II, metaphase II, Anaphase II, and telophase
II.

C. Explore (Introduction of Concept)

MEIOSIS I

-Meiosis starts with this stage and includes the following

substages: leptotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene, and
diakinesis.

Prophase I

-Spindle fibers from the centrosomes of each pole connect to

bivalents or tetrads through the kinetochores. Homologous
chromosomes line up at the equatorial plane. There is double
alignment of the chromosomes.
Metaphase I

-Spindle fibers begin to contract and separate the bivalent or

tetrads. Homologous chromosomes separate and migrate to
each pole of the cell.

Anaphase I
-Chromosomes decondense. Nuclear membranes reform.
Cytokinesis or the cytoplasmic division occurs and two haploid
(N) daughter cells with chromosomes with two sister chromatids
are formed. Prophase I

Meiosis II

-Chromosomes (chromatids) condense to form metaphase

chromosomes. -Nuclear membrane dissolves and nucleolus
disappears. -Centrosomes move towards each pole of the cell.
Prophase II

-Spindle fibers attach to chromatids at the kinetochores. -

Chromosomes line up at the equatorial plane. (Single alignment
of chromosomes). Metaphase II

-Spindle fibers shortened and separated the sister chromatids. -

Chromatids that are now called chromosomes move towards
each pole of the cell. Anaphase II

-Single-stranded chromosomes decondense. -Nuclear

membrane and nucleolus reforms. -Cytoplasm divides
(cytokinesis). -Four haploid (n) daughter cells are formed. Prophase II
