IV. ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION

Internship 1 gives me precious chance to learn many new things and enhances my
practical skill in the translation-interpretation area. Here are some self-reflection about
the strengths as well as the weaknesses drawn from my internship 1.
Strengths and improved skills

- I’m an adaptable person that I get on well with everyone in the company. But
this is a professional working environment that requires quiet, so translators
often speak quietly and sometimes I can't hear them. So I need to improve my
concentration, note-taking, and listening skills.
- After my works were completed and edited by professional translators, I realize
that my vocabulary expanded a lot.
- I used to be impatient and careless due to my lack of reading books or long
documents. But that bad habit disappears when I translate extremely important
personal documents. I have to consider every single or simple mark in the
documents, appropriate words, and form.
Weaknesses

- During internship 1, I recognize my biggest problem is my vocabulary. When I

started to translate documents, I didn’t know many new terminologies related to
law, economy, and estate.
- My skills in selecting and comparing words are still weak, so I often make
mistakes in choosing words that are appropriate for the text and context. So I
need to improve my ability to search and filter on the Internet, and dictionaries.

Here are some methods that I used most when translating:

Free translation:

Free translation is a method to deliver the intended meaning of the source text without
paying attention to details such as syntax, style, and so on of the original text.

For example:

Người ký hồ sơ  signed by

Văn bản được trích lục từ  Extracted from

In addition, I also have to search for some new terms on the original website, especially
about the name of the subject of each university.

For example:

Kỹ thuật điện - Điện tử  Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

Smartcat is a web that is usually used by professional translators so I am encouraged to

use it selectively. Sometimes, I am even confused about some Vietnamese words;
therefore, I need to look up the Vietnamese dictionary to translate those words correctly
into English.

For example: “Nguyên quán” and “Quê quán” are two words that a lot of people
misunderstand. I always thought it was the same until I realized that

Nguyên quán  Domicile or The birthplace of grandparents

Quê quán Hometown or The birthplace of parents

V. CONCLUSION
In conclusion, as a translation intern at Viet Uc Translation Company Limited, I have
learned that being an excellent translator is not easy. There is a lot of experience I need
to gain relentlessly with a spirit of eagerness and dedication to the profession so that I
could become better in the future.

In addition, I have gained numerous useful knowledge and experience for myself. The
internship was like an opportunity for me to find out my strengths as well as my
weaknesses.

I appreciate the support from my colleagues and my supervisor, Ms. Thu as well. When
working here, I learned from them how to be serious and dedicated to work as well as
their enthusiasm.
