I. Introduction:
1.1. Purposes of the internship:
After the learning process at the university, I get to an internship at a translation
company and the goals that I wanted to achieve in an internship are:
- Working in real environment: Learn about the real environment, cooperation and culture
where I am practicing and explore the suitability of a job with my expectations. Internship
is an opportunity to perform the daily tasks in a corporate environment, culture and work.
- Applying the learned knowledge in practical work: After nearly 4 years of learning and
accumulating knowledge in University, I wish to apply them in practical work to develop
and complete my skills and knowledge. The process of applying the knowledge learned in
university to actual work to help me identify strengths, weaknesses and needs to equip
myself with knowledge and skills to meet the job’s demands.

- Using basic equipment at work: I expected more proficient in using the printers, copiers
and other types of equipment in place where I take the internship. Additionally, I believe
that I will be instructed to install and use many necessary softwares that are essential for
my translation works in the future.
- Learning behavior and working with people in the company: I look forward to
learning from experience and professional working style of colleagues in the company.
I hope to have more knowledge relating to my job thanks to colleagues’ supports in the
process of the internship.

1.2. Significance of the internship:

After nearly 2-month internship at the company, I have not only achieved the set goals
but also learnt a lot of useful and necessary things that help me improve myself for my
work in the future. Internship is a good opportunity for me to get more experience in my
major’s field. Basically, the internship is a little like the process of training for a new
employee in the company.
Internship helps me expand the relationship: expand the relationship will allow me to
have many advantages in the future. When internship, I can take full advantage of this time
to become familiar with my colleagues, learn and build relationships. Maybe in the future, I
will be able to have a better chance for looking a career from this relationship.

6
In addition, internship also helps me gain more working experience after graduation: if
my CV shows that I also have the experience in actual work, it will create a huge advantage
for me to get this job. A survey has shown that the employer is interested in the top of
working experience. Although I take part in many activities in school or social
organizations, that cannot be replaced by actual working experience because I will be
equipped with completely different skills.

One array of translation I feel quite hard, it is to translate technical documents. I have
been advised to install and use specialized technical dictionaries. It supported me a lot in
the process of translating technical documents. Technical document is a document type that
is difficult to fully understand, require the compiler must have sufficient skills and
experience, so just keep meaningful and compliance prose style of the original. Therefore,
translators must require many years of experience and great understanding for each field.
In the field of translating and making subtitles for movies, the most difficult is the
terminology in movies, the dialects, slang because it offers cultural particularities of
national languages in general and English speaking countries in particular. This requires
participation in the translator translate subtitles and captioning must have many years of
experience and special understanding of the culture of that country to produce the highest
quality translations.
Especially, I was instructed to install and use the Trados software. This is very useful
software for the task of translation. Trados is the translation software with a lot of utility for
translators. In the field of translation, every day, the translators must process thousands of

documents about many subjects. Many times they see the documents that they have done,
or have done through a similar document. But they could not remember specific so they
have to translate documents again. Or sometimes in the same documents, with many

11
sentences or words they have used before but could not remember. This not only affects
uniformity of the translation as mentioned, but also costs a lot of time useless for
translators. Trados can preserve the original format when translated, ensure uniformity
about the use of terminology, Trados can extract bilingual documents and stores them in
memory. Trados help save time and energy for translators.

IV. Experience learned from the internship:

After 2 months internship in Interprotrans Company with a professional working
environment and enthusiastic supports from everybody in this company, I had more
chances to practice my knowledge from university and approached to lots of things that are
very necessary for my future job. I had been assigned some work relating to my major
about translating and proofreading. Moreover, I am so lucky to take part in some translating
projects of company, and I felt some real experiences as a pro translator as well as feeling
of working under pressure. With an enthusiastic help from my supervisor about my daily
report, I could know clearly what I need to improve. Therefore, my translating skill is much
better.
Working at the Interprotrans Company and under a professional and serious environment
helped me to form working behavior, communicative skills, group working skills and
practice myself in order to suitable with some private principles.
When I was assingned some official work, I tried my best to complete on time, worked
actively from other senior and asked something that I did not understand clearly. Thanks to
carrying on these responsibilities, I could avoid some troubles in official work.
I was assigned to translate documents from Vietnamese to English and vice versa such as
Manual for Installation/ Operation Centrifugal Pump, Manual book for Induction Cooker.
As a result, my translation skills are improved considerably and I also expanded my
vocabulary source. Moreover, I understood clearer about the process of technology
translation.
When translating, we have to understand the context of sentence and use correctly
Vietnamese or English meaning, and the most important thing is we should not use

word-by-word method to avoid misunderstanding. Last but not least, it’s so important for us
to check our translation many times to make sure that our target texts meet the demands.

12
V. Necessary qualities need to be improved:
5.1. Foreign language capability and professional knowledge:
a) Foreign language capability:
“A competent translator is not only bilingual but bicultural. A language is not merely a
collection of words and of rules of grammar and syntax for generating sentences, but also a
vast interconnecting system of connotations and cultural references whose mastery.”
The translation requires the translator more flexible skills in both the source language and
target language. A translator must be familiar with the culture as well as the language they
are translating. This is important because often what is written assumes knowledge that a
same-language audience would have. In translation, no such assumptions can be made.
Therefore, it is up to the translator to recognize these issues and ensure that their
translation is done in such a way as to bridge this gap.
A translator needs to apply the fluency in foreign languages in order to express fully
and exactly the contents of the original, this is very important. Therefore, foreign language
skills of a translator need to be accurate. For example, if you want to notarize an English
translation, you have to translate it in English grammar; Japanese translation must be
written and translated in the Japanese grammar. There are many languages around the
world, so each language has each grammar and style of expression respectively.
Therefore, compiler should be noted the importance of both languages. If the level of
source language translators are not good, that can lead to the understanding of "originality"
will not be perfect and the ability to convey to the target language will certainly be
negatively affected. If the expressive language in the target language is poor, it will lead to
the reduction in the quality of translations.
Translator who wants to improve foreign language capability needs to regularly read
and understand different types of document, train the ability to comprehend, use language
in a subtle way and must have the ability to remember new words and use grammar and
structures properly.
b) Professional knowledge:
Translators are increasingly complete all the skills towards specialization. Therefore,
professional knowledge about the specialized field is an essential factor. Many translators
are specialists in a particular subject. This allows them an in-depth understanding of more

13
technical texts, which they can use to explain these documents easily. A translator’s
understanding of a document goes far beyond what a normal reader would pick up from
reading it through. They analyze each sentence once at a time to make sure it is clear in
their heads. This may raise questions that the reader may never have considered. Because in
each field, a word may have many meanings, preparing the specialized vocabularies and
always consolidating the knowledge relating to documents is a good thing for any translator
to follow
5.2. Lookup skills and ability to translation:
a) Lookup skills:
There will always be areas where the translator is uncertain or not familiar enough
with a particular detail in the text. This means that they have to be excellent and efficient at
research. The translator must use dictionaries. Even translators should go through materials
in both languages to get a complete picture of what is going on. The translator will have to
be able to analyze possible translations for a term and determine which ones will work for
the particular context and then decide on which of those is most suitable in the particular
case.
Translation is not merely a reading a document and convert documents into another
language. Translation goes far beyond being able to see it and say it in another language. To
be able to translate well requires the ability to go deep into the words on the page and
extract the author’s intent in the context of their culture, and then communicate that intent
well in the new language.

14
Although translators have excellent professional capability, sometimes in the
translation process will have some unknown words. Therefore, word lookup capability is
important. In addition to the terms that appear in dictionaries, translators can use the
Internet to look up the word quickly and accurately. In fact, improve the capacity are
essential for translators. Therefore, lookup skills to understanding the necessary
information are very important.
b) Ability to translation:
A translator must be a good writer. Translators should pay attention to the object
will read their translations. Not only do translators convey the meaning of the original
text, but they have to go beyond the words themselves. This includes writing in such a
way that the reader believes the document was drafted in his or her own language. It
also includes conveying the appropriate tone and specialized terminology. Even if the
meaning is conveyed accurately, translating a formal document in an informal way or
vice versa would not leave the reader with the impression that the writer originally
intended.
Even if you can read, understand exactly original, but if you do not show and express it in
local language, the translations will become meaningless. Whether translate English into
Vietnamese or vice versa, you have to be honest to the original. Translators must constantly
upgrade their skills translate to translation read naturally and understandably.
Besides good at foreign language, to translate exactly, as well as for the reader to
understand, translate Vietnamese adept. Translators should not translate word by word, that
must be flexible in using appropriate words for the readers, as well as the content, because
otherwise nobody will understand translators are want to express anything.
Translators must carefully choose the words. Only one word incorrectly also make readers
misunderstand of the author. Translators should avoid using frills wording like "that, then,
is, that," or repeat too many words in the same sentence.
Another factor that is necessary for translators to be capable writes. Correct translation
is not enough, translators must also demonstrate the flexibility in each word to create
attractive to the reader.

15
5.3. Using mother language skillfully:
Translators must be excellent not only in foreign languages but also to be very
knowledgeable about native language. Translators must always consolidate and improve
vocabulary in native language because making a work to the reader is a hard-working
process of the translator.
Translators must use native language fluent to make the translation becomes very natural
and close to the reader. Translators are not always translate literally word for word, but
needs to be flexible given the expression briefly, concisely for translations that. In addition,
applying these life experiences is one of the factors that bring success for translations.
5.4. Complying with the rules of Translation Company:
Anyone who wants to succeed must have prestige. In the developed countries,
punctuality is one of the basic principles to bring businesses to succeed, and in an
individual aspect, it was the first factor to recruit employees of the employer. In particular,
the prestige is an important factor contributing to the success of translators. To demonstrate
themselves as trustworthy, translators need to comply with regulations of the company.
First, translators need to training that is punctuality. Furthermore, on time will also help
create a reliable image in the eyes of partners and colleagues when they need to cooperate
with translators in a certain important task.
Translators need to arrange the workplace tidy and in compliance with rules and
policies of company, participate actively in the movement and activities organized by the
association of the company. Translators need to be friendly and enthusiastic to learn and
help each other. Create credibility and trust from superiors and colleagues are two of some
essential steps to become a professional translator.
5.5. Communicating and interacting with clients:
Communicate arts have always been regarded as the golden key to success. For some
professions, communicating and persuading customers are key factors to succeed. Regard
to individuals effective communication not only help them get sympathy from other people
but also help them learn a lot of experience in work, expand social relationships and have
the opportunity to quickly go to succeed.
Translators communicate with leaders need to show an attitude of respect, with colleagues
should have a friendly attitude, sociable.

16
With customers or partners, translators must keep the right attitude because the translator is
the representative for the company.
5.6. Applying technology in translating process:
Translators need to have the necessary knowledge about information technology office.
Translators must be proficient in computer operations, using printers, copiers and other
kinds of devices support for translation work.
Translators must know how to install and use the software necessary for the translator,
such as Nitro, Infix, Prodict, Megui, Aegisub, Illustrator, Trados and other necessary
software. These are important software that any professional translators also need the
support of software.
However, the world is developing, technology is also growing and people will always
invent new softwares with many advantages to support translators. So, translators must
constantly learn and access to the new softwares that are useful for work.

VI. Recommendations and Conclusion:

6.1. Recommendations:
I feel that I practice in the company is very lucky. After a two-month internship, I have
a lot of confidence. Everyone in the company is very friendly and enthusiastic. Especially
Mr. Lam - director of the company, he always enthusiastically trains and helps me in the
job. In my opinion, the company should create better conditions for students to be
exposed to the actual work, to interact with customers.
6.2. Conclusion:
Translators want to create a good and accurate translations content can’t put all the
words of that language exactly transformed to Vietnamese or vice versa, but the translator
must skillfully combine multiple necessary skills together, for example fluent in foreign
languages, good mother tongue, good writing, the ability to look up vocabulary accurate
and knowledgeable, fluent translation software.
After 2 months of internship in a company, I realized that there are many factors
contributing to a professional translator. However, the most important thing is the
translation must really have a passion for the profession. Because translation is the job
requires meticulous, careful and accurate. You cannot become a "prodigy" in the

17
translation, but if you have the passion and diligence to accumulate experience, you will be
able to succeed. I hope to have the opportunity to work at the company for more
experience.
