 We use the PAST SIMPLE TENSE to talk about habits, routines and daily activities we

performed IN THE PAST.

STRUCTURE:
Positive sentences: SUBJECT + VERB IN THE PAST + THE REST OF THE SENTENCE.

Example: YOU LISTENED TO MUSIC YESTERDAY.

Negative sentences: SUBJECT + AUXILIARY VERB “DIDN’T” + VERB IN INFINITIVE + the


rest of the sentence.

Example: YOU DIDN’T LISTEN to music yesterday

Interrogative sentences: DID + SUBJECT + VERB IN INFINITIVE + the rest of the


sentence.

Example: DID YOU GO to the shop yesterday?


Short answers: YES, I DID/ NO, I DIDN’T.

INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES WITH A WH PARTICLE: WHAT, WHERE, WHAT TIME,


WHEN, WHY, HOW, ETC.

WH PARTICLE + DID + SUBJECT + VERB IN INFINITVE + the rest of the sentence.

Example: WHEN DID YOU LISTEN to music?


Answer: I LISTENED to music….

WHEN WE USE “DID” “DIDN’T” THE VERB DOESN’T CHANGE!

WAS OR WERE?
 WAS/WERE are the past form of the verb BE (am, is, are) which means “SER o ESTAR”
We use WAS with the pronouns I, HE, SHE, IT and we use WERE with the pronouns
THEY, WE, YOU.
Positive Sentences: SUBJECT + WAS/WERE (DEPENDING ON THE SUBJECT) + the rest of
the sentence.
Example: SHE WAS at home.
THEY WERE teachers.
Interrogative sentences: WAS/WERE (DEPENDING ON THE SUBJECT) + SUBJECT + the
rest of the sentence.
Example: WAS SHE at home?
WERE THEY teachers?
Short answers: YES, SHE WAS/NO, SHE WASN’T. YES, THEY WERE/NO, THEY
WEREN’T.
