Ionic Bond (Information)

Ionic bond (a.k.a. electrovalent bond) is a type of chemical bond that involves a
non-metal element and a metal element. The word ionic comes from the root word
ion. An ion is formed whenever a neutral atom gains or loses an electron. There are
two types of ions:
 A positive ion is known as a cation.
 A negative ion is known as an anion.
An ionic bond is the extreme case of a polar covalent bond, the latter resulting from
unequal sharing of electrons rather than complete electron transfer. Ionic bonds
typically form when the difference in the electronegativities of the two atoms is great,
while covalent bonds form when the electronegativities are similar.

Note: Ionic bonding is the only bond that TRANSFERS electrons.
