A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 5

(Prepared by: Jhonnalyn Mae T. Sia)

I. Objectives
A. Content Standards

The learner should demonstrate understanding of area, volume and temperature.

B. Performance Standards

The learner is able to apply knowledge of area, volume and temperature in mathematical
problems and real-life situation.
C. Learning Competencies

Reads and measure temperature using thermometer (alcohol and/or digital) in degree Celsius.
D. At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:

1. read and record thermometer readings

2. measure temperature using a thermometer and;
3. show appreciation of learning how to read and measure temperature by giving examples of
daily life application.
E. Code

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic

Reading and Measuring temperature using thermometer in degree Celsius.

B. References

- K to 12 Curriculum for Grade 5

- Mathematics 5 Week 6 SLM
C. Materials

- Photo cube, thermometer, activity sheets, improvised thermometer, a glass of hot water, ice,
coffee, ice cream

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity

A. Routinary Activities

1. Prayer
2. Energizer
3. Greetings
4. Attendance
B. Review
“Let’s recall our past lesson”

“We have learned about solving routine and non- “Yes, Teacher!”
routine problems involving volume of a cube and
rectangular, right?”
“Yes, Teacher! V = s3”
“Can you remember the formula in finding the
volume of a cube?”
“V = l x w x h”
“How about the formula in finding the volume of a
rectangular prism?”

“Great job! “Understand, plan, solve and check”

But when we are faced with real life problems like
measuring how much water a swimming pool can
hold, what are the steps or methods do we need to
follow?”
“Yes, Teacher!”
C. Motivation
“Now before we discuss another lesson for today,
let us take a look at this Photo cube and see what
pictures we can find”
“Boiling water”
Can you tell me what pictures you see?
Picture 1

“Cooking/drinking coffee/taking a bath”

What is the boiling water for? “No! The water is hot”

“Are you going to touch the boiling water? Why?” “Ice cream”

Picture 2

“No, it’s cold”

“Is the ice cream hot?”

Picture 3 “Coffee”
“Ariel/Michael/James/Nica/Mia”

“No, it will burn you/ it’s hot”

“Who among you likes to drink coffee”

Do you drink your coffee immediately after making

it? “Ice”

Picture 4

“Yes, it feels cold”

Have you touched ice before? How does it feel?

D. Presentation and Discussion

“Temperature”
All of these objects that are in the Photo cube are
either hot or cold. It makes me think of a word that
describes or measures the hotness or coldness of “Yes, a thermometer”
an object. Are you familiar with this word?”

Alright! Have you ever had fever before? What

does your mother use to measure your fever?

Correct! In fact, today we are going to learn how to

read and measure temperature using a
thermometer in degree Celsius.

(Shows a thermometer.)
This is a thermometer.

A thermometer is an instrument used to measure

temperature.

(Shows an improvised thermometer.)

Since the thermometer is small let’s take a look at
this improvised thermometer.

This is the glass tube that holds the glass bulb.

Inside the glass bulb is the mercury or liquid line
that was mentioned earlier. It is represented by
this red line which rises when hot and goes down
when it is cold. The red liquid stops at a number
scale that tells the temperature of the object. The
higher the number the hotter the temperature, the “Yes teacher”
lower the number the colder the temperature. For
example, when the red ribbon stops at number 35,
the temperature is in 35 degrees Celsius. When we
talked about temperature, we commonly used
degree Celsius as its unit of measurement.
Understood class?
(Reads and measures object #1-4)
(give 3 more examples)

Activity
Remember the objects we found on the Photo
cube? I have them here. We are going to measure
the temperature of these objects.

E. Application
“Yes teacher”
Let’s have another activity. I’ll be giving each group
an improvised thermometer. This is what you’re
going to do. I will give you a problem and you need
to get the temperature and show your answer
using your improvised thermometer. Whoever gets
the answer first, will be the one to receive a point.
Is that clear class?

1. From 39 degree Celsius, Ariel’s body

temperature got down by 2 degrees Celsius. What
would be his new body temperature? (The activity will only take 10 minutes at least)

2. The warm water is at its 35 degrees Celsius and

after five minutes it will increase by 10 degrees Answers:
Celsius. What would be its new measure of 1. 37 degrees Celsius
temperature? 2. 45 degrees Celsius
3. (20 degree, they will just point it out.)
3. At night, you will feel the coldness of the desert 4. (they just need to put the red mark at -5)
with its 20 degrees Celsius. 5. 0 degree Celsius

4. The water became ice after putting it inside a

freezer with its -5 degree Celsius of coolness.

5. Baguio City is considered as one of the Summer

Capital in the Philippines because of its cold
weather. If the temperature is at its 30 degrees Temperature is the measure of hotness or coldness of
Celsius and will go down by 30, what would be its an object.
new temperature?

F. Generalization We measure temperature by using thermometer.

Let have a rundown of the things we learned today.

Who can tell me what a temperature is?

The parts of a thermometer are mercury, glass tube,
Very Good answer! and number scale and glass bulb.

Then, how can we measure temperature? The commonly used unit to measure temperature is
degree Celsius.
Correct!

Who can tell me the parts of a thermometer?

That’s right!

In measuring temperature what metric unit should

we used?
No Teacher.
Very Good! It seems that you all listened to our
discussion a while ago. You’ll be able to measure
temperature with the help of a thermometer. A
thermometer consists of a glass bulb that is
attached to a glass tube with a number scale and a
liquid (mercury) is inside. And the most common
used metric unit for temperature is degree Celsius.
Any questions regarding our topic?

IV. Evaluation

V. Assignment
In each number, draw a thermometer and show where the temperatures’ measure is. Put it a bond paper.

1. Water boils at 90 degrees Celsius.

2. Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius.
3. Room’s temperature is 20 degrees Celsius
4. Hot coffee is at 40 degrees Celsius
5. Normal body temperature is 37.5 degree Celsius
