BRIEF INTRODUCTION
History and Background of Arnis

https://theculturetrip.com/asia/philippines/articles/arnis-the-philippines-national-sport-and-martial-art/

The Philippines is rich in both history and culture. The Filipino martial art
of Arnis/Kali/Escrima has added to both the history and diversity of the
Philippines. Escrima is based on the baston or stick. It has also become very
popular in the sport aspect of full contact stick fighting. In 1521, equipped
with nothing more than bladed weapons and their fearsome arnis abilities,
Filipino islanders defeated Ferdinand Magellan’s armored, musket-bearing
Spanish conquistador forces when they tried to invade.

What is Arnis?

Arnis is the National Martial art sport of the Philippines. It is also known as
eskrima and kali. Eskrima is the classical Filipino art of stick fighting.
Arnis is a genuine part of our cultural heritage and our “National Identity.”
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed the Republic Act No. 9850 in
2009, which is an act declaring arnis as the National Martial Art and Sport
of the Philippines. The act mandates the Department of Education to
include the sport as a physical education course. Arnis was included among
the priority sports in Palarong Pambansa (National Games) in 2010.
This sport actually emphasizes weapon-based fighting which is done using
knives, bladed weapons, sticks, and various improvised weapons. Arnis
contributes to the improvement of physical fitness. The execution of the
various skills of arnis involves vigorous movements of the arms, shoulders,
trunk, the abdomen and the lower extremities (the legs and feet). And since
these movements are performed constantly and in a pattern, they provide
excellent exercise for muscular strength, flexibility and cardiorespiratory
endurance which are the three-basic health-related components of physical
fitness. In addition to this, the skill-related components of physical fitness,
specifically agility, reaction time, balance, and coordination are also
developed through Arnis.

What is Modern Arnis?

Modern arnis was started by the late Remy Presas (father of modern arnis)
as a self-defense method. His goal was to create an injury-free training
method as well as an effective self-defense system in order to preserve the
older arnis system. The term modern arnis was used by Ernesto Presas, the
younger brother of Remy Presas, to describe his style of Filipino martial arts
since 1999. https://www.filipinopersonaldefensesystems.com/modern-arnis/

generally have two nodes and the 28-inch sticks have 3 or 4 nodes.

Dealing with Stress in Sports

Stress – response of the mind and body to unkind or challenging life
incidents such as anxiety, tense feelings, worry, and discomfort.
Two kinds of stress
1. Eustress – positive stress a moderate or normal psychological stress
beneficial for the experience, it is helpful in attaining your best performance.
2. Distress – negative stress or extreme anxiety, sorrow, and it is harmful to
performance
What causes stress?
Stressors – triggered by event or a condition that causes worrying situation,
which manifest as risks to the well-being of a person, body responds to
stress by secreting hormones, stress response has a negative consequence
in our body it leaves the body feeling tired, and weakens the immune
system.
Acute Stress – it happens for a short time in bits of thrill, most general type,
arise from recent, past, and foreseen worries.
Cumulative stress – is a form of stress that is chronic, a long-lasting stress
that is unsafe and can lead to severe health problems
Stress Signals are warning signs of stress in terms of physical, emotional,
and behavioral

Ways to Deal with Stress in Sports

There will always be some stress and pressure in sports, it is important to
identify how to deal with it. Trying different ways during preparation helps
you know what will work best for you during competition. You can try:
1. Deep breathing - Take a deep breath and hold it in for 5 seconds, then
release it slowly, do again five times.
2. Muscle relaxation - Contract or flex a group of muscles tightly. Keep them
flexed for about 5 seconds, then release. And do again the exercise five
times, then move to a different muscle group.
3. Going to a happy place - Picture a serene place or event. Imagine stress
flowing away from the body. Visioning success: Imagine finishing a pass,
making a shot, or scoring a goal.
4. Mindfulness - focal point on the present instead of worrying about the
future or the past.
5. Having a routine - Focus on the routine to keep stress in control.
6. Thinking optimistically and developing positive self-talk - Say "I learn
from my mistakes," "I'm in control of my feelings," "I can make this goal!" to
help keep the negative thoughts away.
