CRITERIA FOR JUDGING ICT-01

A. CREATIVE ABILITY (30%)
A.1 Does the project show creative ability and originality in the questions
asked, approach to solving the problem, analysis of the data,
interpretation of the data, use of equipment, and construction or design
of new equipment?
25
A.2 Creative research should support an investigation and help answer a
question in an original way
A.3 A creative contribution promotes an efficient and reliable method for
solving a problem. When evaluating a project, it is important to
distinguish between gadgeteering and ingenuity.
B. THOUGHT OF THE STUDY (30%)
B.1 For Non-scientific Project
B.1.1 Are the problems stated clearly and unambiguously?
B.1.2 Is the problem sufficiently limited to allow plausible attack? Good
scientists can identify important problems capable of solutions.
B.1.3 Is there a procedural plan for obtaining a solution?
B.1.4 Are the variables clearly recognized and defined?
B.1.5 If controls were necessary, did the student recognize their needs and
were they used correctly?
B.1.6 Are there adequate data to support the conclusions?
B.1.7 Does the finalist/team recognize the data's limitations?
B.1.8 Does the finalist/team understand the project's ties to related
research?
B.1.9 Does the finalist/team have an idea of what further research ls
warranted? 24
B.1.10 Did the finalist/team cite scientific literature, or only popular literature
(e.g. local newspapers)
B.2 For Scientific Project
B.2.1 Does the project have a clear objective?
B.2.2 Is the objective relevant to the potential user's needs?
B.2.3 Is the solution: Workable? Acceptable to the potential user?
Economically feasible?
B.2.4 Could the solution be utilized successfully in design or construction of
an end product?
B.2.5 Is the solution a significant improvement over previous alternatives or
application?
B.2.6 Has the solution been tested for performances under the conditions of
use?
C. THOROUGHNESS (15%)
C.1 Is the purpose carried out to completion within the scope of the original
intent?
C.2 How completely is the problem covered?
C.3 Are the conclusions based on a single experiment or replication?
C.4 How complete are the project notes?
14
C.5 Is the finalist/team aware of other approaches or theories?
C.6 How much time did the finalist or team spend on the project?
C.7
Is the finalist/team familiar with scientific literature in the studied field?

C.8 Are the relevant details (including the pages and dates) of the
experiment recorded in the research data logbook?
D. SKILLS (15%)
D.1. Does the finalist/team have the required laboratory, computation,
observational and design skills to obtain the supporting data?
D.2 Where was the project performed (i.e. home, school laboratory,
university laboratory) Did the student or team receive assistance or
engineers? 13
D.1. Was the project completed under adult supervision, or did the
student/team work largely alone?
D.3 Where did the equipment come from? Was it built independently by
the finalist or team? Was it obtained on loan? Was it part of a
laboratory where the finalist/team worked?
E. CLARITY (10%)
E.1 How clearly does the finalist or team discuss his/her/their project and
explain the purpose, procedure, and conclusions? Watch out for
memorized speeches that explain reflect little understanding of
principles.
E.2 Does the written material reflect the finalist's or team's understanding
of the research?
E.3 Are the important phases of the project presented in an orderly 8
manner?
E.4 How clearly is the data presented?
E.5 How clearly are the results presented?
E.6 How well does the project display explain the project?
E.7 Was the presentation done in a forthright manner, without tricks or
gadgets?
E.8
Did the finalist/team perform all the project work, or did someone help?

SPECIAL AWARDS:
A. BEST IN VIDEO PRESENTATION
Use of Resources During Research and Note Taking (20%)

A.1 18
A.1 Sources of information are properly cited using Chicago Manual of 18
Style (CMoS) citations and enable the audience to determine the
credibility and authority of the information presented.
Content / Organization (50%)
The content includes a clear statement of purpose or theme and is
A.2 creative, compelling and clearly written. A rich variety of supporting 45
information in the video contributes to understanding the project's main
idea. Events and messages are presented in a logical order.
Creativity and Use of Media (30%)
The graphics, sound and/or animation assist in presenting an overall
A.3 theme that appeals to the audience and enhances concepts with a 25
high impact message. Graphics explain and reinforce key points
during the presentation.
TOTAL POINTS: 88

B. BEST IN POSTER
Abstract (15%)
B.1 Abstract strongly represented the student’s research. Clearly 12
supported topic presented and contained important points.
Content (40%)
Strong material. Well summarized. Clearly shows development of
B.2 study or research. Material appears to accurately support purpose of 35
study, hypothesis, or research question. Strong conclusion and
implications presented.
Research Complexity Appropriate to Discipline (15%)

B.3 Complex research project, given the field. Purpose of the study was 13
completely defined and results displayed in a manner interpretable by
the general audience.
Appearance / Clarity (20%)
B.4 Visually appealing and strongly effective presentation. Easy to read. 18
Utilized creativity in use of fonts, headings, colors, and white space.
Organization (10%)
