CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Foliar fertilization, also referred to as foliar feeding, is the application of plant

nutrients directly to the foliage of the plant by spraying the crop with a liquid fertilizer

solution. While it can be used on a large variety of crops, it is more commonly applied in

horticulture crops.

Generally, plants can obtain all their essential nutrients from soil. The nutrient

quantities required by plants are large and cannot be supplied through the foliage. Most

information you read regarding nutrients uptake refers to Roots feeding that is applying

the nutrient solution directly to the root zone.

However, it is also possible to feed plants by applying nutrients to their leaves or

foliage, a technique known as foliar feeding. This technique was developed in the 1950s

by Dr. H. B. Tukey and S.H. Wittwer at the Michigan State University Department of

Agriculture. Foliar fertilization of crops can complement soil fertilization. If foliar

fertilization is mixed with post emergence herbicides, insecticides, or fungicides, the

probability of yield response could be increased and cost of application can be reduced.

Foliar spray fertilizer is a good way to supplement the nutritional needs of your

plants. There are various types of foliar spraying options available to the home Gardener,

so finding a recipe or suitable solution to accommodate your needs should be easy.

Sustainable and organic agriculture practices apply management ideals that include a

diverse assembly or farming methods, usually with a reduced reliance on purchase inputs,

this is especially for new farmers with limited resources.

As commercial fertilizer/shipping cost increase, a wide range of food producer in

the Hawaii and the Pacific region have realized the need for locally available fertilizer

from organic sources to improve soil fertility, crop health, and productivity.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to make an advantage in growing plants by using the Foliar

Fertilizer.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following research questions:

1. How can we grow plants faster and cheaper?

2. How can you save more with foliar fertilizer than with other fertilizers?

3. Is this type of fertilizer effective?

4. What may be the advantage of using foliar fertilizer?

5. Can this fertilizer help not only plant but also the economy?

Objective of the Study

This study will be conducted to:

1. determine the benefits of a foliar fertilizer in plants;

2. determine the contribution of the fertilizer in the agriculture;

3. determine how it will help farmers, gardeners and agriculturist to help their

plant grow more healthier; and

4. Assure the healthy effect of the fertilizer on plants.

Assumptions

This study will be based from the following assumptions;

1. When it comes to growing plants, foliar fertilizer is a better alternative to

other chemical fertilizers.

2. The foliar fertilizer will provide the plants with nutrients for growth.

3. Plants will grow healthier with foliar fertilizer because of the nutrients it

provides.

Significance of the Study

This research will provide insights to the use of foliar fertilizer. Through this

research, farmers will benefit and will further promote its use as an organic fertilizer.

Therefore, the analysis presented in this study will lead future researchers in exploring

and developing foliar fertilizer as a safe replacement for chemical based fertilizers.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses only in determining the foliar plant solution that will help the

plants grow healthier. This study will be conducted in Poblacion Aborlan from December

to January 2023.
Definition of Terms

To facilitate better understanding of this study, different terms are defined

operationally herein.

Fertilizer. A natural or artificial substance containing the chemical elements that

improve growth and productiveness of plants.

Overripped fruit. It can be used as a fertilizer, but you either need to bury it deep

in the soil or add it to the compost pile. You can also make liquid fertilizer from the

rotten fruit. You need to use fruit that is clean and free from any pests or diseases.

Water. A natural water with minerals.

Sugar. Is a genetic name for sweet-tasting, soluble carbohydrates, many of which

are used in foods.

Protein. A molecule made up of amino acids.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

Foliar fertilization increases micronutrient uptake and physiological and

biochemical indexes. Many studies suggest that foliar fertilization may help to stimulate

the uptake of soil applied fertilizers, which could provide a solution to salt accumulation

in the soil.

According to Lalog of Dynapharm Philippines, which has distributed Power

Grow (which originated in Malaysia) in the Philippines since 2011, this foliar fertilizer

contains soluble macro and micro elements, Acadian seaweed extract, and humic acid—

all of which are readily absorbed by the plants for optimum growth.

Foliar fertilizers can be designed to meet a plant’s specific needs for one or more

micro and macro nutrients--especially trace minerals and enables one to correct

deficiencies, strengthen weak or damaged crops, speed growth and grow better plants.

Fertilizer recommendations contain several important factors, including fertilizer form,

source, and application timing, placement, and irrigation management.

Another important part of a fertilizer recommendation is the amount of a

particular nutrient to apply. The optimum fertilizer amount is determined from extensive

field experimentation conducted for several years, at multiple locations, with several

varieties, etc. Soils rarely have sufficient nutrient for crops to reach their potential yield.

Applying foliar fertilizers without prior knowledge of their properties may cause

yield decline under low application or pollute the environment with excessive
application. Understanding the nutrient variability and release pattern of organic

fertilizers is crucial to supply plants with sufficient nutrients to achieve optimum

productivity, while also rebuilding soil fertility and ensuring protection of environmental

and natural resources Hamdi El-Jendoubi, Saúl Vázquez, and Fermín Morales. Conduct

the research foliar fertilization (foliar fertilization) can be a cheaper, more

environmentally-friendly alternative to soil treatments with synthetic Fe (III) chelates for

the control of Fe chlorosis in fruit trees (Pestana et al., 2003; Álvarez-Fernández et al.,

2004; Fernández et al., 2013). Foliar fertilization with Fe is traditionally used in crops

where the use of chelates is too expensive (Wójcik, 2004).

Siti Fatimah Hasimah alimon Norhayati Daud that says Seaweeds, mainly brown

species, have long been used as soil fertilizers and have several advantageous effects of

spraying their crude extracts on plant growth. Unlike chemical fertilizer, biofertilizers

derived from seaweeds or other organisms are usually biodegradable, non-toxic, non-

polluting and nonhazardous to humans, animals and birds which will benefit to

agriculture sector. Solid waste generation in the United States continues to rise at a steady

rate.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, Americans generated

about 254 million tons of trash in 2013, which is the equivalent of 4.40 pounds per person

per day. Rick Carr Conduct in January 06, 2016 Base on Liriodendron Tulipifera lin The
