1.0 General Description
The Copperhead® Bridge Plug is a drillable permanent bridge plug
that allows hydraulic fracturing above while holding formation
pressure from below. The use of innovative materials and
technologies provides optimum pressure containment and
excellent drill out properties.

1.1 Application
The Copperhead® Bridge Plug is run in the hole and set on
wireline or tubing (production/coil) to isolate the lower
perforations so an upper zone can be perforated and
fractured. Several zones in one well can be isolated
independently with multiple Copperhead® Bridge Plugs.
Each zone may then be stimulated separately, and the
plugs drilled out in one trip. The Copperhead® Bridge Plug
can be easily drilled out using coiled tubing or jointed tubing
with our recommended mill.

1.2 Features and Benefits

• Short, compact design minimizes drill out time

• Mills up quickly without spinning due to interlocked parts

• Easy to remove lightweight cuttings

• Plug ends provide a rotational lock during drill up of

2.0 Pre-job Planning and Preparation
Pre-job planning and preparation is vital to the successful deployment of the
Copperhead® Bridge Plug.

2.1 Assembly and Maintenance Verification

Capture the assembly configuration of each tool before shipping to the job;
such as, serial number and tool O.D.

Refer to the latest revision of the Copperhead Bridge Plug service manual,
ES21.40044, for general assembly and assembly inspection.

Inspect the Copperhead Bridge Plug before the job.

• Make sure first element back-up rings, and element barrier ring petals
are not damaged, cracked or deformed.

• Verify the slip wicker profile orientation.

• Check for any missing, cracked, or jammed slip wicker.

• Check the bottom sub alignment. The axis of the tabs in the bottom
sub should be aligned with the axis of lead of the bottom slip pad.
Make sure that the brass sheer screw in the bottom sub is tightened in
place with Loctite 272.

Do not use the plug if any discrepancies are found during inspection.

Contact Technical Services for further instructions.

2.2 Pre-run Checklist

Prior to running the equipment, perform the pre-run checklist:
• Review and evaluate job objectives with an on-site customer
representative.

• Verify that all necessary equipment has been delivered to the location.

• Check and verify tool joint connections.

• Inspect all equipment for possible damage during shipment before use.
Inform the customer immediately of shortages or damage.

• Caliper the bridge plug and record all measurements.

3.0 Operating Procedure

3.1 Setting on Wireline

a) Prior to running the Copperhead® Bridge Plug, the well should be
gauged using the appropriate gauge ring and junk basket. This will
clean the hole of debris and ensure the passage of the bridge plug.
b) Inspect for debris inside the junk basket after running. If debris is
found, continue running the junk basket until it is found clean.
c) Make-up the Copperhead® Bridge Plug with the corresponding
wireline adaptor kit and setting tool.
d) Carefully move the plug assembly up into the derrick or lubricator and
start it into the well.
e) Make sure not to impact any liner tops while running in the hole with
the bridge plug.
f) When the setting depth is reached set the plug and retrieve the setting
assembly.
NOTE: Do not run over 150 ft/min (45m/min). If there is a low fluid level,
slow down when entering the fluid.

3.2 Setting on Tubing

The Copperhead® Bridge Plug can be set on tubing using the hydraulic
setting tool, product family number M-418 and corresponding wireline
adapter kit.

a) Run to setting depth at a moderate rate of speed. Do not exceed 60

ft/min (20m/min).
b) At setting depth, insert setting ball in tubing and begin pumping fluid
through the tubing. Pump the ball to about 2,000 feet (600m) from the
bridge plug and allow it to fall the remainder of the way. Do not pump
the ball onto the ball seat, because the pressure can build up too
quickly. When the ball is being pumped down hole it moves through
tubing faster than the fluid flow. Allow for this and stop pumping when
the ball is calculated to be at least 2,000 feet (600m) above the bridge
plug.
c) When the ball lands and pressure is applied, the first pressure surge
shears the shear screws in the setting tool and in the plug. The
element will be compressed.

Section 3 Operating Procedure

d) Apply the pressure slowly; the second pressure surge will actuate the
slips.
e) Continue applying pressure slowly until the pressure drops off
indicating flush the running tool is disconnected from the bridge plug.

3.3 Milling

3.3.1 Mill Type

A specifically designed six bladed carbide mill is recommended for
plug removal (see Table 3-1). This mill provides a very short milling
time and a smooth milling operation. The mill design is field proven
and presents a long service time with optimum milling capabilities.

A conventional concave junk mill or drill bit may also be used, but a
greatly extended milling time is expected.

3.3.3 Milling Parameters on Coil Tubing

The Copperhead® Bridge Plug should mill up efficiently using a
motor of the above characteristics, and an appropriate weight on bit
range (see chart below). Higher weights can be used if required, up
to the stall limit of the motor being used.

At contact with the top plug, pick up off bottom and begin circulating
with an appropriate flow rate. Slowly contact plug with minimum
weight on bit (WOB) and monitor circulating pressure. Both the
WOB and circulating rate can be adjusted as required to establish
the best penetration.

3.3.4 Milling Parameter on Jointed Tubing

The Copperhead® Bridge Plug should be milled efficiently using a
power swivel able of producing sufficient rpm and a pump unit
capable of producing a sufficient flow rate (see chart below).

The optimum weight on bit (as shown below) is required for the
appropriate casing size. A higher weight on bit may be required, if
milling with air foam or nitrogen foam.

Start milling by having the minimum WOB on the mill. Monitor all
milling parameters in the process. Then gradually increase to an
optimum level and adjust the weight accordingly. Apply sweeps
when penetration is reduced.

Run a back pressure sub directly above the mill in order to control
the flow back and to keep cuttings from entering the tubing cavity
when milling or adding tubing while using nitrogen.

The rest of the milling procedure is similar to the milling parameters

on coil tubing.

3.3.5 Milling Sequence

The Copperhead® Bridge Plug is designed to be milled up very
efficiently with no parts spinning. There are three main stages of
the milling process.

The first stage is to mill from the top of the plug up to the point
where the fluid equalizes across the plug (see Table 3-5 for
equalizing distances).

ES20.40043K 8 of 12 Copperhead®
Confidential Property of Bridge Plug, M-957
Schlumberger Operating Instructions
Section 3 Operating Procedure

For multiple plug applications, cuttings may be present from the

previously milled plug. Sweeps may be required at this stage to
circulate the cuttings that tend to interfere with the milling
operations.

The second stage is to mill from the equalization point, through the
upper slips, and up to the upper back-ups. Maintain continuous
milling throughout.

The third stage is to mill from the upper back-ups through the
bottom slips. In this stage maintain continuous milling throughout
with a good penetration rate. Continuous milling should be
maintained through the lower slips. When the lower slips have been
removed, the bottom clutch of the plug will fall to bottom, or to the
next plug in a multiple plug installation.

Milling Tip: If penetration rate decreases, sweep to clear away any

cuttings that may interfere with the milling operation.

3.3.6 Equalizing Distances While Milling

The chart below describes the distances it takes to mill through the
plugged portion of the mandrel. At this point, the fluids will equalize
in pressure. The chart shows equalizing distances for the first plug
milled, and subsequently the 2nd plug and after for a multiple plugs
operation. The bottom clutch will engage the top of the subsequent
plug, and in turn, creates a larger equalizing distance.
