Lesson 2 : Values and Contrast

Assignment :

1. Make a value study for two of the images attached. The goal is to
simplify a complex image by grouping values together, learning to
find structure and hierarchy instead of focusing on details. Do not
trace or worry too much about accuracy. Observe and interpret what
you see. Try to only use 3 (black, grey, white) or 4 values (black, 2
greys, white), no more.

2. Create 5 or more thumbnails (3 values) illustrating a specific moment

in the story you selected. Each thumbnail should be a different
concept, exploring values, lighting, point of view or composition.

– Look at your folder of favourite artists and observe how they use
values and contrasts.
