SPRING CELEBRATIONS
People around the globe celebrate the end of winter season in different ways. Some of these holi-
days have been around for a long time, while others have been added to the calendar quite recently.
1 Floriade – Australia
This new holiday takes place in Australia’s capital Canberra,
where thousands of people attend a huge flower festival. It
starts in September, the beginning of spring season in this
country. Over one million flowers are on show each year. Peo-
ple may also attend concerts and different art displays.
2 Sechseläuten – Switzerland
This festival takes place in Zurich, and includes the tradi-
tion of burning a snowman, named Boogg. The faster it burns,
the better the forecast for summer. Local people believe that
if the snowman takes a lot of time to explode, the summer
will be wet.
3 Cimburijada – Bosnia
This is a festival of scrambled eggs in the Bosnian town of
Zenica. Local people cook large amounts of scrambled eggs in
huge pots, and then give them out for free. This tradition goes
back a few hundred years and attracts many people from dif-
ferent parts of the country.
1 People around the world celebrate the beginning of spring in the same way.
3 In Switzerland some people think that if Boogg does not burn fast, the summer will be wet.
