II. Project Objectives

The general purpose of the project strives to serve quality education to Don Brigido
Miraflor Integrated School (JESMAG) student by knowing the determining factors
to do so. Towards this end, the following objectives are set:

1. To determine the coping mechanisms of Don Brigido Miraflor Integrated School (JESMAG)
Senior High School Students.
2. To evaluate commonly used coping mechanisms by the students.
3. To raise awareness about how students cope with the new learning environment.

III. Background of the Study

Throughout the years, people are attempting to redefine the meaning of education
by changing their programs that would be efficient and effective to all students. One
of which is the K-12 program. This program has been proven to indeed integrate the
knowledge and skills of the students. Although that is the case we cannot deny that
students are still having transition difficulty especially now with the pandemic as
well. Aside from having to learn the new curriculum the students do not have a choice
but to also learn to adapt into the new learning environment due to pandemic.

Students are different from each other. They have different approach on how to
cope and adapt with whichever situation they are. There are a variety of coping
mechanisms that we may use from day to day in order to get used to or adapt through
this we can begin to learn and explore more positive ways to manage our lives.

As per Sarah Mae Sincero (2012) combined the general classifications of coping
mechanisms from different psychologists and people. These classifications are often

obtained through observations and experimentations. The general adaptive strategies

are the following: (a) defense, (b) adaptive, (c) avoidance, (d) attack, (e) behavioral,
(f) cognitive, (g) self-harm, and (h) conversion. Defense is the unconscious way of
coping stress. For an instance, reaction formation and regression. For adaptive
coping, it tolerates the stress. Examples are altruism and symbolization. People who
executes avoidance coping are usually the ones who keeps their self away from the
stress. Examples are denial, dissociation, fantasy, passive aggression, and reaction
formation. Attack coping people are usually the ones who diverts one's consciousness
to a person or group of individuals other than the stressor or the stressful situation.
For examples, displacement, emotionality, and projection. People with behavioral
coping modifies the way they act in order to minimize or eradicate the stress.
Examples are compensation, sublimation, and undoing. Cognitive coping alters the
way people think so that stress is reduced or removed. In other words, these are
compartmentalization, intellectualization, rationalization, repression, and suppression.
Self-harm coping intends to harm self as a response to stress. For an instance,
introjection and self-harming. Conversion coping usually changes one thought,
behavior or emotion into another. Somatization is an example.

These coping strategies will aid the senior high school students in being more
conscious of their behavior. Knowing the students' coping mechanisms can assist
teachers determine the best strategy for teaching effectively in the classroom, which
will be advantageous to them as well as to the school.
