HISTORY and MEANING OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
✓ 30,000 B.C.E. - Cave drawing was one of
the first ways of using educational
technology that appeared before history.
Cave drawings were first found in Asia
and Europe. People would draw pictures
of animals and people on the cave. They
used ground stone, sand mixed with
animal blood, or animal fat to write on the
rocks for their painting.
✓ 510 B.C.E. - Pythagoras academy was
the first formal education academy in
history. It was founded by the
philosopher Pythagoras. Students were
taught in an open classroom setting
where they earned philosophy, science
and mathematics.
✓ 105 B.C.E. – The invention of paper in

✓ 382 - Manuscript transcription was
developed as a writing standard in
Europe so that the Latin alphabet could
be easily recognized by the literate class
from different regions.

- It includes radio, filmstrips, and over-
head projector.
- New York City’s Board of Education was
actually the first organization to send
lessons to school through a radio station.
- Over-head projectors were used by the
US military for training purposes in World
War II.

- Handheld calculators were introduced
into the United States in 1970 and 1971
by the Japanese firms of Busicom
(Nippon Calculating Machine
Corporation) and Sharp (Hayakawa
Electric) as well as the American firm of
Bowmar.
✓ 1974 - The first microcomputer and
portable computer on the market
released was called the MCM/70. It
worked with electric and battery, however
the battery computer needed for special
order and it cost a lot of money.

Graphing Calculator
- The CD-ROM and CD-RW paved the
way for flash drives for easy personal
storage.
- The successor to the handheld
calculator, the graphing calculator made
more far advance math much easier. It
helps plot out points and do long
equations.
✓ Computer Age (1991)
- The SMARTboard was invented by David
Martin and Nancy Knowlton through their
company SMART Technologies in 1991.
It was the first interactive whiteboard that
was able to provide touch controls in the
same way as a computer. The system
includes an interactive whiteboard,
projector and whiteboard software that
accepts touch input from a “smart” pen,
finger or any solid object. It is useful for
note taking, brainstorming, games and
using all forms of media while making
classes more environmentally friendly.
The SMART board turns the classroom
into a fun learning environment that
accommodates different learning styles.

- Exchanging information era started in
90s by using Internet freely for public
.This era helps teachers communicate
with their students by emails.
✓ 2010 – Apple Ipad was introduced and
became popular around the world.

classrooms through the following years.
