Study the evolution of media from Pre – Industrial Age to Information Age. Try to
distinguish the traditional and new media that have occurred in the four ages. Then identify
its relationship from one another ( Traditional Media – New Media)

Pre-Industrial Age (Before 1700s) - People discovered
fire, developed paper from plants, and forged weapons
and tools with stone, bronze, copper and iron.
Examples: • Cave paintings (35,000 BC) • Clay tablets
in Mesopotamia (2400 BC) • Papyrus in Egypt (2500
BC) • Acta Diurna in Rome (130 BC) • Dibao in China
(2nd Century) • Codex in the Mayan region (5th
Century)• Printing press using wood blocks (220 AD)
Electronic Age (1930s-1980s) - The invention of the
transistor ushered in the electronic age. People harnessed
the power of transistors that led to the transistor radio,
electronic circuits, and the early computers. In this age, long
distance communication became more efficient. Examples: •
Transistor Radio • Television (1941) • Large electronic
computers- i.e. EDSAC (1949) and UNIVAC 1 (1951) •
Mainframe computers - i.e. IBM 704 (1960) • Personal
computers - i.e. HewlettPackard 9100A (1968), Apple 1
(1976) • OHP, LCD projectors

Information Age (1900s-2000s) - The Internet paved

Industrial Age (1700s-1930s) - People used the power of
steam, developed machine tools, established iron production,
and the manufacturing of various products (including books
through the printing press). Examples:• Printing press for
mass production (19th century) • Newspaper- The London
Gazette (1640) • Typewriter (1800)Telephone (1876) •
Motion picture photography/projection (1890) • Commercial
motion pictures (1913) • Motion picture with sound (1926) •
Telegraph • Punch cards

An excerpt from ROLE OF MEDIA IN
DEMOCRACY
Media has a very big role to play in a
democracy and its stature is in no way less than that
of politicians. Hence it is rightly called the fourth
Pillar of democracy i.e. Fourth Estate. It is through
media that people become aware of so many aspects
of life of which they are normally ignorant.
Democracy is meaningless without a free, neutral and
active media. Media is often referred to as the fourth
branch of government because of the power they
wield and the oversight function they exercise.
The role of the press as ‘watchdog’ is a
traditional characterization of the role of the news
media in particular. This watchdog role can take
many forms depending on the nature of the medium
concerned, as well as on the state of democracy and
development in a particular country. Essentially, this
role is to provide information – to be the ‘eyes and
ears’ of the public in monitoring what is happening in
public life by reporting on daily events as they
unfold.
The role of media as ‘detective’ is a critical
adjunct to the role of the press as public watchdog;
however, it is dealt with separately here to emphasize
the difference between reporting on public affairs,
and journalistic investigations into wrongdoing in the
administration of public affairs. When journalists are
well trained and have trusted sources of information,
the press is able to investigate wrongdoing by public

Read the text below about the latest theory of information and media: The Internet of
Things (IoT). Analyze how this new emerging trend in ICT can improve the quality of life
of the people. After reading, go and search references for further enhancement and look
for another theories for information and media.

“Connected Life” as the scholars and researchers of GSMA referring to The Internet of Things
IoT is the emerging trend or latest theory in media and information in the 21st century. They defined
it as the use of connected devices and systems intelligently to control data gathered by embedded
sensors and actuators in machines and other physical objects. This kind of convergence will release
a new dimension of services that will improve the quality of life of the people (GSMA 2014).

The internet is changing and evolving which leads to new technologies, applications, protocols
and algorithms. Acceleration of wireless communication trends brings an ever growing innovation in
Internet connectivity and mobile broadband. Infrastructure less communication devices become
ubiquitous, smart, powerful, connectible, smaller, cheaper, and easier to deploy and install. This
unlocks a new future direction in the society of ICT: the Internet of Things (IoT) Qawy (2015).

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated devices connected to a network and/or
to one another, exchanging data without necessarily requiring human-to machine interaction. IoT
devices are connected to the internet: directly, through another IoT device, or both. Network
connections are used for sharing information and interacting with users. The IoT creates linkages and
connections between physical devices by incorporating software applications. IoT devices can enable
users to access information or control devices from anywhere using a variety of internet-connected
devices. For example, a smart doorbell and lock may allow a user to see and interact with the person
at the door and unlock the door from anywhere using a mobile device or computer (Congressional
Research Service 2020).
