YOUR LESSON
• Identifying Traditional Media and New Media and its Relationship
TRY TO DISCOVER

Study the evolution of media from Pre – Industrial Age to Information Age. Try to
distinguish the traditional and new media that have occurred in the four ages. Then identify
its relationship from one another ( Traditional Media – New Media)

Pre-Industrial Age (Before 1700s) - People discovered Electronic Age (1930s-1980s) - The invention of the
fire, developed paper from plants, and forged weapons transistor ushered in the electronic age. People harnessed

Information Age (1900s-2000s) - The Internet paved

the way for faster communication and the creation of
the social network. People advanced the use of
microelectronics with the invention of personal
computers, mobile devices, and wearable technology.
Moreover, voice, image, sound and data are
digitalized. We are now living in the information age.

MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY

First Quarter/ Week 2 / Day 3

OBJECTIVE:
Explain how the evolution of media from traditional to new media shaped the values and
norms of people and society

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY

• The Evolution of Media: Shaped the Values and Norms of Society

TRY TO DISCOVER
Read the excerpt below from Understanding Media and Culture. See how the evolution of media
shaped the society. You can read the full text by browsing the internet address below. Answer the
following questions:
1. What are the roles of media in the society since pre-industrial age up to the present?
2. How did the evolution of media improve the norms of the society based on the pictures?

An excerpt from Understanding Media and Culture Source:

https://open.lib.umn.edu/mediaandculture/c
Media fulfills several roles in society, including the following: hapter/1-3-the-evolution-of-media/

a.entertaining and providing an outlet for the imagination,

b.educating and informing,
c.serving as a public forum for the discussion of important issues, and
d.acting as a watchdog for government, business, and other institutions.
❖ Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press enabled the mass production of media, which
was then industrialized by Friedrich Koenig in the early 1800s. These innovations led to the daily
newspaper, which united the urbanized, industrialized populations of the 19th century.
❖ In the 20th century, radio allowed advertisers to reach a mass audience and helped spur the
consumerism of the 1920s—and the Great Depression of the 1930s. After World War II, television
boomed in the United States and abroad, though its concentration in the hands of three major
networks led to accusations of homogenization. The spread of cable and subsequent
deregulation in the 1980s and 1990s led to more channels, but not necessarily to more diverse
ownership.
❖ Transitions from one technology to another have greatly affected the media industry,
although it is difficult to say whether technology caused a cultural shift or resulted from it. The
ability to make technology small and affordable enough to fit into the home is an important aspect
of the popularization of new technologies.

MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY

First Quarter/ Week 2 / Day 4

OBJECTIVE:
Searches latest theory on information and media - MIL11/12EMIL-IIIb7

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY

• The Internet of Things as Theory of Media and Information
TRY TO DISCOVER

Read the text below about the latest theory of information and media: The Internet of
Things (IoT). Analyze how this new emerging trend in ICT can improve the quality of life
of the people. After reading, go and search references for further enhancement and look
for another theories for information and media.

“Connected Life” as the scholars and researchers of GSMA referring to The Internet of Things
IoT is the emerging trend or latest theory in media and information in the 21st century. They defined
it as the use of connected devices and systems intelligently to control data gathered by embedded
sensors and actuators in machines and other physical objects. This kind of convergence will release
a new dimension of services that will improve the quality of life of the people (GSMA 2014).

The internet is changing and evolving which leads to new technologies, applications, protocols
and algorithms. Acceleration of wireless communication trends brings an ever growing innovation in
Internet connectivity and mobile broadband. Infrastructure less communication devices become
ubiquitous, smart, powerful, connectible, smaller, cheaper, and easier to deploy and install. This
unlocks a new future direction in the society of ICT: the Internet of Things (IoT) Qawy (2015).

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated devices connected to a network and/or
to one another, exchanging data without necessarily requiring human-to machine interaction. IoT
devices are connected to the internet: directly, through another IoT device, or both. Network
connections are used for sharing information and interacting with users. The IoT creates linkages and
connections between physical devices by incorporating software applications. IoT devices can enable
users to access information or control devices from anywhere using a variety of internet-connected
devices. For example, a smart doorbell and lock may allow a user to see and interact with the person
at the door and unlock the door from anywhere using a mobile device or computer (Congressional
Research Service 2020).
