Introduction

The application of materials on buildings are varies. The choice and placement of the materials on buildings can
distinguish the appearance and image of a building. This project is designed as an exposure for students on building
materials that are universally used in building design. Hence, students are required to choose any ONE of the listed
architects to conduct a case study on buildings designed by the architect in the context of building materials
applications as architectural and structural features together with its relation to the design concept of the chosen
buildings. This online research exercise aims in helping the students to explore and understand on the reasoning of
the choice of materials used on buildings together with their characters, properties, the influence, and installation on
the building design in general.

Learning Objectives

3. To demonstrate the installation of building materials on buildings. 3

Task

Individually, student need to choose an ‘interesting’ building designed by one of the architects given in the list. From
here, the student needs to identify five (5) architectural building materials and two (2) structural building materials
based on the chosen building. Students are also to study on the ideas and concept behind the selection of the
material and of the building. Additionally, students need to describe the installation of one (1) of the materials applied
on the selected building. Building’s selection can be from any time or age. The compilation of the findings needs to
be nicely composed in ONE (1) A2 size board that include the following information:

1. A brief background of the architect.

2. Historical background of the chosen building.
3. Clear images and information (properties, location, application, material selection in relation to ideas &
concept) of the FIVE (5) architectural building materials and TWO (2) structural building materials
respectively.
4. Sketches of one (1) material’s installation on the selected building.
5. Relevant images of the chosen building (floor layout, elevations, three-dimensional perspective etc.).
6. Overall conclusion on the choice and application of materials on the chosen building.

Individually, each student is suggested to follow the following methodology in completing this assignment:

1. Choose attractive building (has many types of materials applications).

2. Identify the types of materials that are being applied at the chosen building (structural and architectural).
3. To figure out on the installation of materials on the building - ONE (1) material only.
4. Draft a board/paper layout (A2 - content, description).
5. Composition of findings, photos, drawings, etc. into the A2 size board.

of the work can be in a portrait or landscape orientation. Please DO NOT FORGET to include your name with your
respective tutor. All submission needs to be uploaded on myTimes as follows:
