THE RESPIRATORY

SYSTEM
HOW THE RESPITATORY SYSTEM
WORKS?
When you inhale, you take in oxygen from the air, then
the air passes through your nostrils. Inside, there
are tiny hairs that clog dust particles, then the air
passes through the larynx, and the vocal cords
vibrate. After the larynx, the air passes through the
trachea, which filters the inhaled air, the bronchi
carry the air to each lung. Inside the lungs, they
continue to divide and become smaller tubes called
bronchioles and eventually end in tiny rounded sacs
with very thin walls called pulmonarys.
WHAT DOES THE RESPIRATORY
SYSTEM DO?
The respiratory system has many functions apart
from helping you breathe in and out, some are:
• Allows you to speak and smell.
• Heats the air to match your body temperature and
humidifies it to the level of humidity your body needs.
• Delivers oxygen to the cells of your body.
• You remove waste gases, including carbon dioxide,
from your body when you exhale.
• Protects the respiratory tract from harmful and
irritating substances.
