Rebar design
Considering the hypothesis proved during the SPIT tests that the ultimate bond strength of resin versus concrete is at least equal to
that of high adhesion rebar in concrete, we can apply the formulas given in the Eurocode 2 – article 5 (P18-711-5), §5.2.2.3 to
determine the anchoring depth ls (mm), which can be given by the equation:
General
φt fyd
Lb =
4 fbd
∅t : Drill hole diameter for the ∅steel-bar considered (mm) Concrete strength class fck (N/mm2) fctk5%(N/mm2)
fyd: Elastic limit of rebar in N/mm2 C20/25 20 1.5
C25/30 25 1.8
fbd: Design values of the ultimate bond resistance N/mm2
C30/37 30 2.0
fbd = 2,25 ⋅ η1 ⋅ η2 ⋅ fctd C35/45 35 2.2
C40/50 40 2.5
fctk5% C45/55 45 2.7
fctd =
γc
γc: Safety partial factor equal to 1.5
NRD: Maximum ultimate limit load for rebar (N)
N RD = As ⋅ fyd
So for a design ultimate load FRd (≤ NRd), The embedment depth Ls is given by the following equation:
φt f yd 1 φ f yd 1
L b = FRd ⋅ ⋅ ⋅ = FRd ⋅ t ⋅ ⋅
f ctk5% π ⋅ φ t ⋅ f
2
4 f bd As ⋅ f yd 4
2,25 ⋅ η1 ⋅ η 2 ⋅
γc 4 yd
1 FRd
Lb = ⋅
1.5 ⋅ η1 ⋅ η 2 ⋅ π φ t ⋅ f ctk5%
FRd
After simplification , we obtain: Lb ≈
4.71 ⋅ η1 ⋅ η2 ⋅ φt ⋅ fctk5%
η2 = 1 for Øbar ≤ 32 mm
η2 = 0,92 for Øbar = 40 mm
EXAMPLE
With this data, to obtain the design value of resistance equal to 35 kN, the necessary embedment depth is:
35.10 3
Lb = = 275 mm
4.71 ⋅ 15.1, 8
