1 INTRODUCTION
The Bridge is across river Alaknanda and has a central span of 100 m. The bridge is constructed using balanced cantilever approach.

2 SCOPE OF THIS DOCUMENT


This document contains the transverse design of the 12 m wide Superstructure. The Superstructure consists of RCC/Post Tensioned I
Girders and Cast in Situ RCC Slab.
The transverse design is done using the simplified 2D approach in which the live loads are applied for unit width of the member in the
transverse direction. The dispersion of the live load to calculate the intensity is done using annexure B3 of IRC 112.
The number of design lanes on the bridge is based on the clear width available between the crash barriers on
the either side.
The paved shoulder is also considered in the width for the determination of the number of lanes.
Minimum Clear Width between the Crash Barriers is taken for the determination of the number of the lanes.
Width available = 11.0 m
The following live load configurations are considered as per Table 6A of IRC 6 for 3 Lane Bridges
1. 4 Lanes of Class A
2. 2 Lanes of Class A + 2 Lane of Class 70R
The bridge shall be designed for 3 number of design lanes as per Table 6 of IRC 6.

Dead Loads
The dead weight of the deck is applied.

SIDL
The loads applied on the deck are based on the DBR.
1. The Wearing Course is applied based on the thickness of 50 mm wearing thickness.
2. Crash Barrier load is applied as 1 t/m.

Live Loads
The live load analysis is done considering there is no median as it would lead to more forces in the deck.
The following load combinations are considered as per Table 6A of IRC 6 for 4 Lane Bridges
1. 3 Lanes of Class A
2. 1 Lanes of Class A + 1 Lane of Class 70R

5.7 CRACK WIDTH CALCULATION


The calculation of crack width is done as per cl. 12.3.4 of IRC 112.
The crack width Wk is computed as
Wk = Sr,max (εsm - εcm)
where,
Wk = Crack Width
εsm = Mean Strain in Reinforcement Under Loads
εcm = Mean Strain in the Concrete between Cracks

where,
σsc = Stress in Tension Reinforcement
αe = Es/Ecm Long Term is Adopted
εcm = Mean Strain in the Concrete between Cracks
Es = Modulus of Elasticity of Steel
Ecm = Modulus of Elasticity of Concrete
ρp,eff = As/Ac,eff
Ac,eff = Effective Area of Concrete in Tension Surrounding
Ac,eff the reinforcement of Depth hcef
hcef = Lesser of 2.5(h-d);(h-x)/3;h/2
kt = Factor Dependent on Duration of Load

k1 = Factor for Bond Properties of the Bonded Reinf.


k1 = 0.8
k2 = Coefficient which takes account of the distribution of
strain
k2 = 0.5 For Bending
