Taking a gap year before attending college has recently gained enormous
popularity amongst high school graduates. My essay below will analyze both the
benefits and the drawbacks of the phenomenon.

Having a year off after high school graduation is advantageous in some

certain aspects. First, students can utilize this period of time to travel to acquire
knowledge of various fields such as foreign languages and cultures. This would be
more difficult during their years at university owing to their intense studying
schedules. Second, many high school graduates benefit from taking a temporary
job before starting their college life. Due to the inadequate provision of career
orientation in high school, sparing another 12 months looking for a job or signing
up for a vocational course is considered a remedy (bp khắc phục ) for students to
figure out their future path.

From an opposite angle, the disadvantages of a gap year before college are
varied. Initially, compared to the students having a year off, those who go straight
to university after high school are more likely to have a permanent job early. They
finish their academic studies one year in advance, hence better opportunities to get
a job with stable incomes. More importantly, high school seniors might lose their
studying habits as well as discipline. In other words, one year spent on travelling or
working can demotivate (mất tinh thần ) them from following tertiary education.
(đại học, cao đẳng)

In conclusion, despite some benefits in terms of traveling and working, taking a

year off before college life might both jeopardize students’ occupational
opportunities and result in studying discouragement.

Topic 2: Some people regard video games as harmless fun, or even as a useful
educational tool. Others, however, believe that videos games are having an
adverse effect on the people who play them.
In your opinion, do the drawbacks of video games outweigh the benefits?

Outlines:
Pros:
-entertainment
 The more amount of studying, working stress, the higher demand for
relaxation
-> the increasing rate of people who play games
- enhance logical thinking, problems solving skills
 Use brain to complete some tasks in quiz games
*Cons:
- highly additive
 Spending too much time on games leads to their negligence on some
important acticities, daily routines ( studying, working)
 Crime cases increase since teenagers get involved in robbery, murder to
enrich their current budget
Model answer

There have been endless arguments over the possible impact of video games upon
players. Much as the dispute in favor of the significance of the advantages of those
games is legitimate, personally I believe they are still outweighed by the
disadvantages.

On the one hand, some certain benefits of video games are undeniable. Firstly,
they are functioning as a source of harmless entertainment. In modern time, daily
performances always go along with a huge amount of stress from studying and
working, hence the higher demand for relaxation. As a matter of fact, the world is
seeing an increasing number of not only youngsters but also adults who play video
games to alleviate (xoa dịu) the intensity ( cường độ) of their academic studies or
hard-working occupations. Secondly, it is also proved that playing games can
enhance logical thinking and problems solving skills since players are forced to use
their brain to complete the game.

On the other hand, I would argue that those video games present more
disadvantages. Video games are highly addictive, and that players are constantly
given more stages in these games leads to their negligence on other important
activities since the temptation of clearing those stages is sometimes irresistible. If
time is spent excessively on games, players’ daily routine, studying or working for
instance, will suffer. More dangerously, many crime cases have been reported
recently with the motive of getting money to play video games. Especially young
people are more likely to get involved in robbery or even murder as their addiction
to games cannot be sufficed by their current budget.

In conclusion, although video games’ entertaining and educational benefits are

widely recognized, I still think that the drawbacks are more significant.

TOPIC 1: Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning
a foreign language at primary schools rather than secondary school. What are
the advantages and disadvantages of this?

Outline:
Pros:
- Children are so young that picking up a new language is effortless:
 Surveys, 4-9ages is a golden time for a person to adopt a new language
as it is the period to have the best listening skill,… + imitate fast
- Studying language early facilitates to have a better job opportunity
 Nowadays, language is as important as science and technology ->
acquiring some language skills have a lot of benefits

Cons:
- Chidren are too young to balance between studying language and other
main subjects
 Not focusing on their mother tongue which is more needy and important -
> time waste
 Get confused to study two languages at the same time -> have a negative
effect on their development. ( ex: a bilingual child tend to talk more slowly
than a monolingual one)

Answer
Due to the development of communication systems, learning an international
language at an early age has been a controversial global issue. Following that, it is
commonly acknowledged that primary schools are the most appropriate places for
teenagers to adopt the second language rather than the secondary ones. From my
personal perspective, in this essay, I will analyze both the benefits and
drawbacks of that phenomenon.

Undoubtedly, there is a great deal of advantages when studying a foreign

language at primary educational institutions that we all can reckon. First and
foremost, at those ages, most schoolchildren are so young that they can
effortlessly pick up any languages or imitate the right pronunciation. According to
some recent surveys, a 4-10 ages group is generally considered as a “ golden
period ” for any teenagers to adopt a new language, since it is the crucial period
when children seem to develop their best pronunciation and listening ability.
Secondly, learning an international language early boosts humans to have a better
future path. Evidently, in modern world, language is regarded as important as
science and technology, which means that acquiring some language skills
prematurely like English encourages each individual to get more qualified job
opportunities in the future.
From an opposite angle, despite some obvious merits of this aspect,
learning a foreign language at primary school also has potential
disadvantages. It stands to reason that at children age, a particular child seems to
be too young to balance between studying the second language and other
curriculum subjects. In other words, it could be a waste of time because teenagers
need to concentrate on their major subjects such as math, science and their own
mother tongue language, which is mostly more significant than the international
one. Furthermore, schoolchildren may get confused to master two languages
parallelly, which could lead to have a negative effect on their mind development.
For instance, averagely, a bilingual child tend to talk and understand more slowly
than a monolingual one.

In conclusion, although there are several demerits of some cognitive limitations

of age, learning an international language at primary schools instead of secondary
ones has a huge range of advantages, not only improving the quality of global
intellectual teams but also facilitating a bright future for humans.

TOPIC 2: Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning
a foreign language at primary schools rather than secondary school. Do the
advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

Outline:

Cons:
- Chidren are too young to balance between studying language and other
subjects
 Get confused between two language-> time waste
- Not understand the full meaning of aspects of the language
have a detrimental effect on their mind development.
* Pros:
- Children are so young that picking up a new language is effortless:
 Surveys, 4-9ages is a golden time for a person to adopt a new language
as it is the period to have the best listening skill,… + imitate fast
- Studying language early facilitates to have a better future
 Nowadays, language is as important as science and technology ->
acquiring some language skills have a lot of benefits

Answer
These days, the development of communication systems has recently uplifted
controversial arguments whether primary schools are better places to learn an
international language than the secondary ones. From my personal view, I believe
that this topic has far more benefits for several following reasons.

There is no doubt that studying a foreign at primary educational institutions

could pose a quite detrimental threat to the development of schoolchildren.
First, at those early states, teenagers aged around 6-10 years old are not mature
enough to strike a balance in intense language studying schedules. In other words,
arranging a stable timetable between studying the mother tongue language and the
second one seems to be unavailable for the childlike. That can be time-wasting and
counterproductive provided that the young still pay too much attention to adopting
the another language or get disoriented with two parallel languages. Second, the
age limit also could prevent school-aged children from having the full awareness
of the entire meaning of aspects of any languages, which reduces negatively the
importance of languages in their mind.

From an opposite view , despite some several evident demerits of that

opinion, I strong reckon that picking up a foreign language in grade schools is
exceptionally advantageous for humans’ development progress in numerous
aspects. The most crucial merit is that a 4-9 ages group is the most appropriate
period to master any international languages. Because, according to scientists,
during those period, children have a tendency to develop their pronunciation and
listening skill in the best conditions, they could effortlessly pick up language
grammars and imitate successfully the right pronunciation. Besides, in the modern
world, when language is regarded as crucial as science and technology, having
language skills in early ages might bring a great deal of benefits for mans’ future.
As a matter of fact, many branches have currently gave priority to candidates who
have an excellently advanced English skills, which means acquiring foreign
languages in advance during elementary schools could grant many individuals with
much better job opportunities in the future.

In sum, although there are still drawbacks in studying languages at primary

schools rather than secondary ones. I firmly believe that the favorable
advantages are much more significant.
