 STEP #1: BUILD YOUR
AUDIENCE

If you want to build a profitable online course, then you need an audience
of ideal customers to sell it to!

This is the very first step in building a profitable online course business,
and it is the FOUNDATION of the whole thing.

Building your audience takes time, which is why this is step #1 in the
process.

Here’s how to do it:

DETERMINE YOUR NICHE & ICA


(PAINS, PROBLEMS, DESIRED OUTCOMES)

Since starting an online business is so accessible these days, there is a


LOT of competition out there. And if you want to stand out and be able to
compete as a new course creator, you’ll need to niche down!

Instead of simply teaching on “fitness” or “social media”, get more specific!


WHAT specific result can you help someone get, and WHO specifically can
you help get it?

For example: 

"Fitness” becomes “weight-loss for busy new moms” and

“Social media” becomes “helping new coaches find paying clients on


Instagram”
Get SPECIFIC and niche DOWN.

Once you’ve done that, do a deep dive on researching your ICA – aka your
Ideal Customer Avatar.

“Eavesdrop” on their conversations and find out what they’re saying


online in relation to your niche. 

You want to find out:

Their major pain points & problems


Their desired outcomes
Their goals, hopes & dreams

Knowing your ICA inside and out will help you create the EXACT
course they need to solve their biggest problems and hit their
desired goals,.AND it will make it 1,000x easier to get your messaging
right so you can get them to BUY when you launch your course.
CHOOSE YOUR PLATFORM

The reason most aspiring course creators never launch is because they
get too overwhelmed by all of the things they’re “supposed to” get done
before they launch.

And when you decide to be on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, &


LinkedIn all at the same time, you’ll find yourself in the fast lane to
burnout!

I teach all of my clients to focus on ONE platform to market your


business (and two at most).

Pick a platform that:

Your ideal customer hangs out on

You enjoy creating content for

You can commit posting consistently on

CREATE YOUR CONTENT PLAN


& STRATEGY

Before you ever talk about your course to your audience, you need them
to:

KNOW
LIKE
& TRUST you

And in order to build the KLT factors, you provide them tons of value
through your content!

They say that someone needs to hear from you at least 7x before they’ll
buy from you, so creating valuable content and getting it in front of your
audience CONSISTENTLY is key if you want to make sales.
Depending on your chosen platform from above, you’ll be posting
valuable content 1-7x per week.

If your platform is YouTube? Publishing a video once per week is great. 

fI your platform is Instagram? Aim for 3-5 valuable posts per week at
minimum.

Pick your THREE main content pillars, and consistently create


content on those topics.Your content should:

Educate & provide value (how-to content, teaching)

Establish you as an authority in your niche (testimonials, results)

Show your personality & unique style (personal stories, personal

philosophies)

OUTREACH STRATEGY

If you want your audience to grow quickly, you need to use social media
to get SOCIAL!

Find ideal customers on your chosen platform and reach out to them
to start a conversation. This could be following them, engaging with
their content, leaving thoughtful comments, or sliding into their DMs.

Many will take notice and follow or subscribe to you as well. 

Aim to spend 20-30 mins per day to reach out to new people and
nurture those relationships and you’ll grow FAST.
CREATE YOUR LEAD MAGNET
(& START YOUR EMAIL LIST)

Things can change quickly on social media, and at the end of the day we
DON’T own our audiences on social media platforms.

Which is why you’ve probably been beaten over the head with, “You need
an email list!” time and time again...

It’s true though.

The best way to protect against that is to create a lead magnet,


promote it on your chosen platform, and grow your email list.

That way, you have DIRECT access to your ideal customers’ inboxes
whenever you need to get their attention (like when you’re ready to
launch your course), and algorithm changes don’t cramp your style.

To get your followers onto your email list you’ll need a lead magnet or
freebie.

The BEST lead magnets address a single pain point or problem your
ICAs have, and delivers them a quick win.

Your lead magnet can be:

A PDF guide or checklist

A video

A mini-course

A webinar

Once you create it, promote your lead magnet to your audience
frequently! Stick a link to the signup page in your IG bio, your YouTube
video descriptions, and anywhere else you can think of.

Aim to have at minimum 100-200 email subscribers before


moving on to the next stage, where you’ll present your course
idea to your audience!
 STEP #2: VALIDATE &
PRE-SELL

OUTLINE YOUR COURSE

This one is pretty self explanatory. Write an outline of your course


content, what’s included, who it’s for, what problems it solves, and the
promised outcome or transformation.

Break the content down into important modules and individual lessons.

CREATE YOUR SALES


MESSAGING & OFFER

Decide on your offer. What is your price-point? What’s included? Do you


have any bonuses?

Write your mini sales page or sales letter that you’ll be sending out to your
email list to get them to buy.

Like with your outline, you want to include a few key things in your
messaging:

Who it’s for


What problems it solves
What’s the outcome or transformation
What they get
Price (and any discount)
Timeline for when it’ll be delivered
VALIDATE & PRE-SELL

Did you know? It’s actually a super BAD idea to create your course first
and then sell it.

It’s true! 

Smart course creators pre-sell their course BEFORE they spend weeks
or months creating it, so they can walk into the course creation process
knowing FOR SURE they’re creating something people actually want to
buy.

Which is where the Validation & Pre-Sale Process comes in!

If you’ve been staying consistent with providing value to your audience,


they’re beginning to Know, Like, & Trust you.

Now we want to present them the idea for your course and ask them
to BUY.

You want to ask your ICAs to put their money where their mouth is and
enroll in your course – before you create it!

Why would someone do that?

Because for your first “validation launch” you’ll…

PLATFORM

Your course needs a place to live online, and there are lots of course
hosting platforms to choose from.

I have experience with two and can highly recommend them both:

TEACHABLE KAJABI

I used Teachable for a number of years and now host my courses with
Kajabi. It’s mostly up to personal preference & budget so choose
whichever one you like best!

They’re both great platforms & very beginner friendly.


CREATE YOUR COURSE
CONTENT

Now it’s time to buckle down and create the MVP version of your course!

MVP stands for Minimum Viable Product – and it is simply the


simplified, bare-bones first version of your course.

I want to emphasize that the goal with your MVP is to get it done
QUICKLY, get it out to your students, get their feedback – and
improve & iterate for your next launch.

So get to work filming your course videos, creating your supporting


documents, and everything your students need to achieve the promised
outcome.

When it comes time to release your course content to your students, you
can either…

Drip it out week by week as you create it

Teach it live every week and then add the recordings to your course

^ This is totally up to your personal preference and the way you like to
teach.

Remember: The goal is NOT to make it perfect! 

Creating great courses is an iterative process, and the best courses are
shaped & molded over time with the feedback from your students.

Aim to build out your course in 30-60 days.

AUTOMATE

You did it! You created your first course, enrolled your first cohort of
students, and made some sweet $$$ from selling your unique knowledge
