6. METHODOLOGY
• For detailed information about project specifications mentioned in this Method Statement, follow the
Project Document IQWQ-FT-NSPDS-00-040701 Specification - Driven Piles and Sheet Piles.
• All piles shall be driven (one at a time) with power impact hammers (or another approved driving
method) capable of installing the piles to the specified capacity, resistance, and minimum depth, taking
in consideration the physical characteristics of the soil, topography, surrounding facilities and
undergrounds. Details of the compatible equipment are specified in section 6.1 and Section 7. Tables
and figures are included, and they are as per sheet pile manufacturer (Arcelor Mittal).
• Installation of sheet piles shall be one by one until completion of the first pit, after that,
SUBCONTRACTOR shall proceed the next pit. The sheet piles for the second pit (at the interface area
only) will be inserted slightly a higher height than the ones of the first pit to avoid clashes. As per the
Project Engineering, the sheet piles will be used as formwork and Nelson Studs will be welded and
embedded in the casted concrete.
• The weight of the striking parts of the hammer shall not be less than 1/3 of the pile weight.
• Vibrating hammers or drop hammers shall not be used, unless approved in writing by
CONTRACTOR/COMPANY.
• Piles driven with faulty equipment shall be subject to rejection by CONTRACTOR/COMPANY. Cost of
removal or installation of additional piles shall be borne by SUBCONTRACTOR.
• To remove any damaged or rejected sheet pile, vibrating hammer (upon approval from COMPANY), or
extractors shall be used. Both techniques loose the pile from its initial position so that it moves with the
help of the pulling force of the crane. The limit values of the extractors and crane loads given by the
manufacturer shall be respected, thus, use Heavy Duty Extractors only to perform this activity. Jetting
on the damaged sheet pile could be performed to facilitate the extraction.
• For an air/steam hammer, a calibrated pressure gauge (third party certified) shall be provided.
Issue Date: 14-04-2020
Iraq Brach
• For a double-acting diesel hammer, a calibrated bounce-chamber gauge (third party certified) shall be
provided.
• The gauges on the hammer side of all valves shall be positioned so that gauges can be easily
observed by inspecting personnel. Gauges shall not be greater than 30 meters (100 ft) of hose away
from the hammer intake.
• Open-ended (single-acting) diesel hammers shall be equipped with a device to permit inspecting
personnel to visually determine hammer stroke at all times during pile driving.
• A penetration of 20mm per 10 blows shall be considered as the limit for the use of all impact hammers.
Following the hammer manufacturer’s recommendation, under certain circumstances a penetration of
1mm per blow could be allowed for few minutes.
• Hammers shall not be operated at less than the speed and stroke length specified by the
manufacturer.
• For Diesel Hammers, the limit number of blows is 20mm per 10 Blows, or in accordance with the
Hammer manufacturer’s recommendations.
• For Drop Hammers, the driving rate will be 40 Blows/min, or in accordance with the Hammer
manufacturer’s recommendations.
• For Double acting air/steam hammers, the driving rate will be limited to 150mm/min, or in accordance
with the Hammer manufacturer’s recommendations.
• For Double acting hydraulic hammers, the driving rate will be limited to 60 Blows/min, or in accordance
with the Hammer manufacturer’s recommendations.
• Fixed leads shall be provided and used to secure piles against lateral movement during driving. Leads
shall be held firmly in position by stiff braces.
• Axis of the leads, hammer, and pile shall coincide. Swinging or spud type leads shall be used only with
approval of the CONTRACTOR/COMPANY.

• Hammer cushions or cap blocks shall be provided in either of the following configurations:
a. Aluminum and micarta discs stacked alternately in a steel housing and with a steel plate at the top
and bottom of the stack.
b. One-piece hardwood cap block, with grain parallel to the pile axis and enclosed in a close-fitting
steel housing. Satisfactory driving criteria shall be established with this cap block, and a new cap
block shall not be used during the final driving of any pile.
• Cap blocks made from other materials shall be used with approval of the CONTRACTOR/COMPANY.
• Wood chips, small wood blocks, wood shavings, wire rope, or other materials with high-elastic
properties shall not be used for cap blocks.
Safe means of entry and exit shall be provided and used whenever the work area is 0.6 meters (2
feet) above or below a point of access. Horizontal distance from workers to nearest access/egress
should not be greater than 25 feet (7.6 meters). Ladders and scaffolding arrangement shall be used.
If ladders will be used for access once pit will reach deeper than 4 m, retractable fall protection
device (yoyo) shall be used.
During the excavation activities, for every meter (1 m) and up to two meters (2 mts) depth, the staff
performing the scanning has to enter into the Pit. One (1) or Two ladders (2) shall be installed and
fixed to the temporary frame depending on the dimension of the pit and shall be adjusted according
the work progress to meet the specification of the project. Confined space procedure must be
applied once excavation reached 1.2 m.
Once the pit is completed, the total depth will be around 5 mts, thus, all safety measures of confined
space shall be met and the Entry/Exit means shall be installed by using ladders, scaffolds and
supports.
The term CONFINED SPACE means any place, including any vessel, tank, container, vat, silo,
hopper, pit, bund, trench, pipe, sewer, flue, well, chamber, compartment, cellar or other similar
space which, by virtue of its enclosed nature, creates conditions which give rise to a likelihood of
accident, harm or injury of such a nature as to require emergency action due to:

Previous starting the activities and before staff enters the pit, the atmosphere shall be tested by the
competent authorities, considering the geometry of the pits and the physical properties of any
potential contaminants or gases (e.g. H2S, SO2, etc). Testing may need to be carried out
continuously or intermittently during the work depending on the findings of the risk assessment.
Access and egress into confined space shall be blocked by means of chain and warning sign when
not in use (after work hours).
Emergency and rescue procedures, rescue arrangements, training/toolbox talks, rescue logistics
and rescue equipment shall be ensured, deployed and available on site at all time. All Project
Documentation related to the Emergency Responses, Plans and Manuals are referenced in Section
4 of this Method Statement.
6.3. Dewatering
According to the Geotechnical Investigation Reports, Groundwater was found around 6 m below
ground level. During raining periods, it is estimated that the groundwater level could increase up to 1
m.
The excavation depth of the KO DRUM PIT (Option B) and DRIP POT PIT (Option F) is around 5
mts, thus, exists the possibility to find water during the execution of the work, especially during
raining season and during the excavation of the Pumps’ pits that are deeper than 5 mts.
The more suitable method for dewatering the pits is Sump Pumping, which is the simplest form of
groundwater control by pumping (i.e. dewatering). In its basic form it involves allowing groundwater
to seep into the excavation, and directing the groundwater to localized low points (called sumps) in
the excavation. Water collects in these sumps, which are equipped with ‘sump pumps’ – robust pumps
with the capacity to handle some solids in the water. Water is then pumped away (perhaps requiring
some treatment to remove suspended solids prior to discharge at the ultimate disposal point). The water
removed from the pits are stored in a cofferdam, from where is collected by bowsers to remove the water
outside the DS6. SUBCONTRACTOR will provide the necessary dewatering system for when
excavations fill with rains or groundwater. During the excavation, diesel driven centrifugal pump, a

temporary Cofferdam, hoses, bowser, etc., will be provided to dispose of water at least 10 to 20 meters
away of the Pits and then outside DS6.

Inspector.
10. If sheet pile refuses due to obstructions, SUBCONTRACTOR/CONTRACTOR will analyze and take
actions following the possible solution.
11. If any pile is rejected because of damage or blow limit, SUBCONTRACTOR will remove the rejected
pile and install a new one repeating the process but taking actions to solve the constraints. QAQC
inspector shall keep records of all the rejections, constraints and actions taken.
12. After installation of all sheet piles, fix the temporary support frame.
13. Excavate up to 1 m depth and proceed to re-scan the excavated area to identify underground services.
After completion of the scanning, if there is not presence of underground services, continue the
excavation up to 1 m more and re-scan the area again.
14. Finish the excavation as per indicated depth according the last revision of the IFC Drawing. For the
focused activities in this Method Statement, the following depths are shown:
• For KO DRUM PIT (Option B) the excavation is up to EL (-) 1.825m.
• For DRIP POT PIT (Option F) the excavation is up to EL (-) 1.925m*
15. Surplus materials to be removed and properly disposed at designated area.
16. Place the lean concrete and cast the base slab, walls and equipment supports up to EL +2.000, below
the temporary support frame. SUBCONTRACTOR shall ensure sufficient overlapping length for
vertical rebars to cast the walls up to the design elevations.
17. Remove the temporary support frame after the curing of Pit Walls.
18. Complete wall construction as specified in the IFC drawing.

The following calculations were performed to verify the design of the Flare KO Drum & Drip Pot Pits
Temporary Frames and the specifications of the Sheet Piles. All parameters were taken from the
Specifications of the Project and, when not available, the worst case scenario was simulated in order to be
conservatives.
• Uniform Surcharge Load: A surcharge load is any load which is imposed upon the surface of the
soil close enough to the excavation to cause a lateral pressure to act on the system in addition to
the basic earth pressure. Groundwater will also cause an additional pressure, but it is not a
surcharge load.
• Examples of surcharge loads are spoil embankments adjacent to the trench, roads, construction
• As per IQWQ-FT-NSPDS-00-040701 Specification - Driven Piles and Sheet Piles, the Uniform
Surcharge Load shall be assumed minimum by 1465 Kg/m2 (14.37 kN/m2), but, to be more
conservatives, this analysis included the simulation of two more simultaneous loads of 250 kN,
equivalent to two Mid-Size Excavators (p.e. CAT 323D3 25 Tons) located at one meter from the
Pit’s edge.
• Diagonal members bracings and fixed leads held by stiff braces were not included in the simulation
because of Software Limitations. Nevertheless, this limitation helps the calculations to be more

• Only one Stage of Waler Frames was considered for this analysis. Pile Sheets with welded Nelson
Studs will be used to precast concrete. Installing more than one stage of frames would interfere
• For standard sheet piles up to 5200 cm3/m section modulus, 4 to 5 meters retained height may be
achievable for cantilever design, however, assuming bad soil conditions and service lines nearby, a
propped wall supported by one Waler Frame was included to be safe for up to 10 meters height.
Refer to Figure 2 – Type of Walls. This criteria gives a very high Factor of Safety (FOS), as our Pits
According to the Geotechnical Investigation Reports W3QR-90-M005-00003-5, 00006-5 and 00002-5, the
subsurface conditions generally consist of alternating layers of soft clays and loose clayey sands extending
to 10m below the ground level. These are underlain by alternating stiff clays and medium dense sands
which become hard and very dense after 24 meters below the existing ground level.
A built-up pad consisting of a compacted structural fill layer (medium dense to dense SAND, 2m thick) is
encountered at the ground level.
Cone Penetration tests (CPT’s) showed high friction ratio indicating possible presence of peat/organic
content. Laboratory analysis for organic content were performed to confirm whether peats are present. The
obtained results of organic content test were generally less than 2% which is considered low and not
expected to be a significant impact for engineering assessment.
Groundwater was found around 6 m below ground level. During raining periods it is estimated that the
groundwater level could increase up to 1 m.

After entering the Data of the Drip Pot Pit, the Design Report was Not Satisfactory due to the Temporary
Frame location. According to the IFC Drawing, the frame is located at the very top of the Pit’s Edge. The
recommendation is to install the Frame at least 0.36 Mts, taking in mind the distance from the Edge to the
center of the Waler Beam. Nevertheless, the current design should be acceptable because the transversal
supports at the corners were not considered and the Loads were exaggerated during the simulations. It is up
to the CONTRACTOR/COMPANY to follow the recommendation to slightly relocate the frame and match with
the Satisfactory Simulation. Figure 5 shows the Report with the Unsatisfactory Design; Figure 6 shows the
Satisfactory Report with the suggested location.
