CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Study

The laboratory is a place to conduct research, ranging from clinical chemistry, parasitology,
bacteriology and others. Judging from the material or a careful sample, it can harm workers and the
environment around them. The most important thing in dealing with Covid-19 cases is to provide a
condition that a suitable laboratory for testing is a laboratory with a level 2 biosafety cabinet, this is
based on regulations HK.02.01/Menkes/234/2020 regarding the Covid-19 PCR Examination
Guidelines, laboratories that are allowed to carry out Covid-19 testing have at least level 2 biosafety
standards. In this case, there are workers known as Medical Laboratory Technology Analysts, which
is a field of work that focuses on research in laboratories in particular.

In his work, an analyst cannot be separated from the dangers that threaten especially from cell
contamination or viruses that can be transmitted. As a preventive measure, there is a tool known as a
biosafety cabinet where various types of biosafety and different functions are the job of health
analysts to better understand the types and workings of this tool, while it can be started during the
education period supported by special training activities by health analyst candidate. In addition, the
distribution of biosafety cabinets is also something that the government needs to emphasize, at least
in each area there are 2-3 clinics or hospitals and this is a shared responsibility, because it is one of
the important things as an examination during the covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, I am interested in
taking the topic Covid-19: Using Biosafety Cabinets As An Effective Way To Protect Tech Analysts
Medical Laboratoryto be used as a discussion material that can solve problems, and increase my
special knowledge.

1.2 Statement Study of Program

Based on the research background, the formulation of the problem in this study is what is
behind the biosafety cabinet as an effective way that needs to be understood in protecting ATLM
while working in the laboratory, especially descriptively and in perspective during the covid-19
pandemic ?

1.3 Reasons for Choosing a Topic.

This topic was chosen with the reason to know the importance of understanding the biosafety
cabinet as an effective way to protect ATLM when working in the laboratory in particular, based on
a descriptive background and perspective during the Covid-19 pandemic..
1.3 Benefits of The Study

The benefit of this research is that ATLM officers can understand the importance of choosing
the right laboratory with quality safety, so that they are protected from harmful pathogens when
working in the laboratory. In addition, this research is useful for students or students as a provision
of knowledge to hone skills before working in the laboratory.

1.4 Outlet of Paper

a. As a background, the many types of BSC that require different treatment need to be
made a joint task, especially for ATLM. With the aim of knowing the importance of
understanding the biosafety cabinet as an effective way to protect ATLM when working
in the laboratory.

b. This article was written based on two different sources discussing the topic of Class II
and Class II Biosafety Cabinet Implementation Type A2 and B2.
CHAPTER 2

RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 Class II Biosafety Cabinet Implementation

Review Related Literature

In the literature one specifically explains about Class II Biosafety Cabinet Implementation.
Class II biosafety cabinet is a special requirement for testing for SARS and Covid-19 with treatment
methods adapted to the criteria and requirements in accordance with international, national and
regional regulatory documents:

a. International Standard ISO 15189:2012: Regarding medical laboratories related to human health
examinations, class II biosafety cabinets.

b. US Australian Standard 2252.2-2009: Regarding biosafety cabinets which work in protecting

biological agents harmful to personnel and the environment and also to protect the use of
materials in cabinets from exogenous contamination.

c. China National Standard YY 0569-2011: About class II biosafety cabinet.

d. Japanese Industrial Standard JIS K 3800:2009: Regarding class II biosafety cabinets.

e. NSF/ANSI American National Standard 49‑2018: Biosafety Cabinet: Design,

Construction, Performance and Field Certification

f. European standard EN 12469:2000: Biotechnology-Performance criteria for microbiological

safety safety

As based on the document, the current study strengthens the practice in medical laboratories
related to preventive measures against SARS & CoV-19 should be based on this to prevent unwanted
things during the examination process. The findings have provided control measures that are
practical enough for medical laboratories to implement to help ensure a safe laboratory environment.

Meanwhile, in the literature one specifically explains about Class II Biosafety Cabinet Type
A2 and B2. Class II BSC Similarities and all Class II BSC provide four types protection:

a. Protect BSC operators from pathogen contamination

b. Protect the laboratory and the outside environment from hazards in BSC work by
filtering the air exhausted or taken from the BSC
c. protect the samples in the BSC from air contamination in the laboratory by downward
flow filtering the air in the cabinet to the BSC working area.

Meanwhile, one of the differences between BSC class II types A2 and B2 lies in the air flow
process. For type B2, the air that enters the cupboard is 100% exhausted to the atmosphere. None of
the air drawn into B2 for either inflow or down flow is recycled in the airflow system whereas, A2
differs in that it recycles some of its air after filtration –about 60% to 70%.

2.2 The Position in The Study

The use of biosafety needs to be enforced especially during the pandemic because in addition
to protecting materials, second-class biosafety cabinets are also able to protect their personnel from
pathogen contamination. In addition, the need for the role of medical personnel, educators, and the
government also plays a role in enforcing the use of class II biosafety cabinets on the identification
of Covid-19 and the need for training to prospective ATLM personnel before carrying out their
duties.
