LESSON 1: MOVEMENT IS LIFE

LESSON 2: EAT RIGHT. EAT SMART! (2 weeks)

LESSON 3: COMMON INJURIES DURING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OR

EXERCISE (2 weeks)

At the end of this unit, the students should be able to:

Distinguish the different essentials in doing a sound training program;

Gain knowledge in making a suitable training program;
Understand the ratio of exercises; and
Understand the importance of doing a sound program and its role in
the improvement of lifestyle

LESSON 3:
COMMON INJURIES DURING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OR EXERCISE

When we perform physical activity, we should do so in a safe and spacious

environment. We should put our equipment in the right place, know their uses and how
they work in order for us to perform efficiently. In case of injuries, we should also know
how to take care of ourselves.
In this lesson, you will identify some injuries that may happen during exercise or
physical activity and how to treat them. We will also identify tools and supplies necessary
for maintaining the equipment and facility intended for physical activities.

Upon completion of the module, learners should be able to:

 Distinguish the different types of common injuries sustained during physical

activity or exercise;
 Identify the cause , signs and appropriate first aid of injuries; and
 Perform necessary first aid procedures independently.

First aid is the assistance given to any person or individual suffering from injury or
sudden illness. It is the proper care provided to preserve life, to prevent any condition
from worsening, and to promote recovery.
During physical activity or exercise, injury is almost always inevitable. Accidents
may occur at any time during any activity. That is why it is more important for us to
understand and educate ourselves in preparation for such situations. We should also
understand that not all injuries are the same. The most common injuries that occur during
physical activity are acute injuries – injuries that happen suddenly. It may be a fracture,
sprain, or strain. On the other hand are chronic injuries – injuries that develop over a
period of time.
What is a common cause of injuries? Force! As in tension, where a force pulls or
stretches the tissues; compression, where a force crushes the tissues; shearing, where
a force across a parallel organization of tissues; and bending, a force on a horizontal
beam or bone that places stress within the structure. It is completely impossible for an
individual to get injured by not doing anything.
Below are some of the injuries that may occur during physical activity, their causes,
signs and symptoms, and corresponding first aid.

1. FRACTURE is a break or crack in a bone. An open fracture pierces the skin surface
while in a closed fracture, the skin above is intact.
First aid:
a. Check vital signs
b. Do not move the injured part
c. Stop bleeding if there is any.
d. If you have to move the person, immobilize the broken part by splinting.
e. Seek medical help immediately.
2. DISLOCATION is partial complete displacement of the bones.
First aid:
a. Call for help immediately
b. Splint the affected part.
c. Do not try to move a dislocated part or force it back into place.
d. Apply ice on the injured part to reduce swelling.
3. SPRAIN is an injury to the ligaments of a bone due to accidental tearing or
overstretching.
4. STRAIN is an injury to the muscles which is a result of improper use of the muscle.
First aid:
a. Rest the injured part.
b. Apply ice
c. Compress the injured part
d. Elevate the injured part.
5. HEAT EXHAUSTION is caused by loss of salt and water due to excessively high
temperature. This may lead to heatstroke and even death.
First aid:
a. Transport a victim to a cool place.
b. Give him/her plenty water.
c. Check for vital signs.
d. Seek medical help.
6. DROWNING happens when air cannot get into the lungs because of water. It can
cause immediate death when taken for granted.
First aid:
a. Lay the person down on his back.
b. Check breathing and open the airway.
c. Give rescue breaths and chest compression if necessary.
d. If the person is breathing, place him in the recovery position.
e. Treat for hypothermia by removing wet clothing and covering him with a dry
blanket.
7. HEAT STROKE is caused by a failure of the “thermostat” in the brain to regulate
body temperature. When this happen, the body becomes seriously heated.
First aid:
a. Move the person immediately to a cool place.
b. Remove as much of his outer clothing as possible
c. Call for a medical help
d. Wrap the person in a cold, wet sheet and keep the sheet wet until his
temperature drops to 38𝑜 C or 37.5𝑜 C under the tongue or armpit, respectively.
e. If the person has returned to normal temperature, replace wet sheet with a dry
one.
f. Monitor, vital signs until help arrives.
g. If temperature arises, repeat the cooling process.

Activity 1: LET’S GO and LET’S DO! (WEEK 8-9)

Performance Task through Role Playing, Pantomime or Individual Dramatization

Scenario:
In one household, things are not properly arranged. Knives are put in a place where
children can easily reach. Fruit and vegetable peelings are not properly thrown. Detergent
bars and other laundry materials have no labels.
A child is playing in the living room while the mother is cooking.
1. Present one injury that can possibly happen in the situation.
2. If you were in the situation when the injury happened, how are you going to
help the victim?

Criteria: Correctness of Procedures, Sincerity and Observance of Safety

Assessment is important before you apply the necessary first aid procedure. To
prevent further injury, the first aider must be able to assess the gravity of the incident. We
cannot prevent injuries, we can only control them. Proper treatment should be given to
an injured person right after the incident. Once you are done applying the necessary
protocol or first aid, immediately such the injure person to the hospital.
