REFLECTION OF MY PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES

In this essay, I have decided to use the Gibbs model of reflection to analyze and reflect on my
experience that may help me in this pursuit of nursing.

Leadership management and teamwork one of the essential elements anywhere.  While doing a
job or doing the work, a person alone cannot do all the things by himself.  He or she had to
cooperate with others to fulfill the given task and responsibilities.  Moreover, a person cannot
possess all of the qualities, which may be required at the workplace.  Therefore, cooperation and
coordination among the colleagues and coworkers are necessary, which leads to leadership
management and teamwork.

One of the valuable experiences that taught me the practical experience was the new hiring of my
colleague, who was supposed to be my assistant. As she was hired as my assistant, therefore I
was responsible for her training. As she was newly hired, she did not possess much knowledge of
the work; consequently, I was responsible for teaching her the duties and responsibilities she had
to fulfill during the continuation of a job as an assistant. I was very excited because someone was
there to assist me and share my responsibilities. Therefore, I passionately started to give her the
guidelines regarding the smooth working of the office. In the beginning, my assistant seemed to
be learning and understanding all the guidelines provided by me. I realized that she is learning at
an adequate speed as he is following the orders and guidelines provided by me. In the beginning,
she was a bit slow as I thought she was finding it hard to adjust herself in the office environment,
but after some time, I came to realize that she was not interested in learning anything. Whenever
I gave her a guideline regarding work, she was unable to do it according to my guideline.
Instead, there were many mistakes in her work. In the beginning, I thought that it was just
carelessness, but after a few days, she started to make serious mistakes. After advising her on
work, I always told her that she could ask if she has any confusion. However, she always seems
to be making serious mistakes, and after that, she just says sorry without even taking
responsibility.

I used to reassure her that she could always consult me if you have any problems regarding
work as she always used to place documents in the wrong folders, make the documents and
create confusion in the entire office. She even used to make huge mistakes in creating invoices
by giving wrong information or entering the wrong data. These careless acts and errors
sometimes brought a huge pile of work to me because I have to be responsible for her actions
and the correction of her mistakes. In the beginning, I showed an understanding behavior as I
thought it was a lack of knowledge regarding the work, but with time, I realized that she is not
interested in learning anything.  She was unwilling to give 100% in her performance as she does
not care about the company; therefore, I decided to talk with the director regarding her
performance. When I spoke to the director, he did not care much about my worries and the extra
work that I have to do. The director was very fond of her; therefore, he did not take any harsh
steps to make her realize her responsibilities; instead, he called the new employee in the room
and spoke to her in front of me. After that discussion, she started some performance for a week,
but she started making mistakes again after a week. It was a very frustrating situation because I
dealt with her in a very polite way, as I was willing to help her in any situation.  In return, she
did not show any concerns regarding your responsibilities and duties, which were assigned to her
according to her post. After that, I requested the director to transfer to another department as I
gave up on her.

Feeling

In the beginning, I was very excited and confident that I could train her as an assistant.
However, I did not expect her to be as careless about her work as she showed a very carefree
behavior, which was not professional at all. I did not expect that I would have to go through the
frustration because of her careless attitude towards her responsibilities. I was unable to
understand her situation because I could not relate to her mood.  Considering the case, I
continuously try to guide her as much as possible by maintaining friendly behavior.  However, I
certainly felt the pressure during this time, magnified because her mistakes created intensely. I
was feeling a bit comfortable, but I still gave her many chances to concentrate on her
responsibilities assigned to her.

Evaluation

This situation was very complicated because my assistant was unwilling to show compassion
towards her responsibilities, which was against professional behavior. I try to maintain a
professional and confident approach by constantly guiding her towards her work and
highlighting her mistakes. In return, she was willing to cooperate with me regarding her duties
as an assistant. To maintain my department's reputation and dignity, I try to talk to the
director regarding this issue.

During this time, I felt immense pressure, which altered my feelings regarding teamwork and
leadership management.  As after her mistakes, the work is doubled.  I was not prepared for this
behavior, as I was not expecting a careless attitude in professional life.

Analysis

In every workplace, we have to work in a team because a single person cannot fulfill all the tasks
and duties assigned to him or her. Therefore, the teams are made, and the roles are assigned to
them. While doing this, the team members are responsible for helping other team members who
have some difficulty in the fulfillment of the tasks. However, in this scenario, the other team
member, which was my assistant, did not pay any attention to her assigned task. Still,
leadership skills demand the utilization of the subordinate’s skills to boost the team's morale and
performance.

Conclusion

From this experience, I have come to know that leadership skills are necessary when a person
becomes in charge. It is because leaders are required to make the team members work to improve
the team's overall performance. I realized that involving other people could not solve the issue
permanently. A leader should take some steps through which he or she can make his team
members work for the target. Even in panic situations where the subordinate has made some
mistakes, it is very important to stay calm and handle the situation accordingly with a thoughtful
mind instead of emotions.  Wise decisions should be made to handle the situation and make the
subordinate realize his or her mistakes so that the same mistake cannot occur in the future.

Action plan

In the future, there is a need to lead the team in a very efficient way so that the subordinates or
other team members can realize their duties. For this reason, constant monitoring and assigning
the team members with the responsibilities is one of the main elements to make them realize the
importance of the team and their role in the team.  Therefore, there is a need to make the people
responsible for their actions and duties so that the ratio of the mistakes can be lowered in a team.

I believe that I will become more confident in my leadership skills over time as this job and
experience help me in learning the behavior of the people.  Due to this experience, he was able to
understand the importance of teamwork and the impact of the carelessness of a member of the
team. I also realize the importance of the leaders and their qualities, which are necessary to
maintain the team's overall performance.

In the field of Nursing, nurses have to face situations with patients where patients are unable to
understand the situation. Most of the time, patients refuse to understand the situation as they are
only looking at themselves and their pain. During these hard times, there is a need to develop a
sense of patience along with better communication so that the patient can understand the
situation. Sometimes when working in a team, especially in the profession of Nursing, often
fellow nurses leave their responsibilities to others; during those times, it is necessary to develop
leadership skills by depicting professional behavior with the fellows and team members.
Therefore working regarding the development of professionalism among the team members
should be ensured. These core competencies regarding professionalism help the team members
realize their worth and duties are making them develop the team's overall performance (Bowen,
Williams & Stanke, 2017).

Therefore, the nurses are taught about leadership skills and Team Management because, in this
profession, engagement of the people is required. For this reason, the staff or team members
must be encouraged to develop and groom themselves and gain confidence among themselves
and their abilities (Lucas et al., 2015). For this reason, the development of necessary leadership
skills is required to give direction to the team members and subordinates regarding the issues. At
the same time, teamwork is an important element because we have to work in a team. Therefore,
to achieve the best performance, there is a need to develop teamwork (NHS, 2016).

In order to deliver impactful health and social care, the development of leadership and
interprofessional teamwork is necessary, especially for the nurses. It is because the development
of good clinical leadership skills among health professionals is considered an essential element
for the deliverance of high-quality Healthcare to the patients. Considering the importance of
leadership skills and teamwork, the National Health Service has also considered developing
leadership skills as an essential element. Leadership skills do not develop in a day; it takes some
time. The improvement in leadership skills and team management can also be made by learning
from previous experiences. These previous experiences can be from various situations in which
we have been involved. For example, the previous workplace experiences, at a public place,
during university, etc. With the help of this course, I was able to recognize the improvements in
my leadership skills and teamwork. It is because, during my previous jobs, I have gone through
various experiences, which involved my interaction with the clients, which can be related to the
patients. It also affected my interaction with my teammates and subordinates, which helped me
in realizing the value of a leader and the importance of leadership skills in a team. Through my
experiences, I had developed various improvements that were not known to me. Still, after
relating these experiences with the necessary skills required for the nurses, I can utilize that
precious experience and the learnings in this field. For example, my experience where I have to
deal with my assistant can be related to nursing as in various situations; we have to deal with the
patients who are unable to understand their responsibilities. Sometimes within a team, there are
some conflicts, which are needed to be resolved as every person is responsible for their duties,
which are to be fulfilled by themselves only.

This course has helped me in assessing the importance of leadership skills and teamwork at the
working place. Due to which I am able to make you realize my skills.  Because of this word
course, I can also identify the critical leadership skills, which need to be developed to have more
effective interaction and coordination within a team and with the patients. These skills are
necessary to avail the best performance at a place.
