MOTION PROBLEM

Motion problems involve the distance,

rate, and time of an object in motion.
These types of problems can be solved
using simple formulas and algebraic
equations.
MOTION PROBLEM
There are several formulas used in motion
problems depending on what is given and what is
being solved. The most common formulas are:
Distance = Speed x Time
Speed = Distance / Time
Time = Distance / Speed

2 hours. What is its
speed in miles per hour?
EXAMPLE

speed in miles per hour?
Formula: Solution:
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 60 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 = 𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 =

𝐺𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛: 𝑑 = 60 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠 = 30𝑚𝑝ℎ
𝑡 = 2 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠 The car's speed is 30 miles per hour.

500 miles per hour. How long
does the trip take?
EXAMPLE
An airplane travels 1000 miles at an average speed of
500 miles per hour. How long does the trip take?
Formula: Solution:
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 1000 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 = 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 =
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 500𝑚𝑝ℎ
𝐺𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛: 𝑑 = 1000 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠 = 2 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
𝑠 = 500𝑚𝑝ℎ The trip takes 2 hours.
ANSWER
A train travels 200 miles in 4
hours. If it maintains the
same speed, how long will it
take to travel 500 miles?
EXAMPLE
A train travels 200 miles in 4 hours. If it maintains the
same speed, how long will it take to travel 500 miles?
Formula: Solution:
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 200 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 = 𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 = = 50𝑚𝑝ℎ
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 4 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 = 500 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 = = 10 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
𝐺𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛: 𝑑1 = 200 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠 50𝑚𝑝ℎ
𝑡1 = 4 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠 It will take the train 10 hours
𝑑2 = 500 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠 to travel 500 miles.
ANSWER
A cyclist travels from point A to point
B at a speed of 16 km/h. On the way
back, she travels at a speed of 20
km/h. If the round trip takes a total of
5 hours, what is the distance
between point A and point B?

NUMBER PROBLEM
A number problem involves
using mathematical operations
to solve a problem involving
numbers.
When 6 times a number is
increased by 4, the result is
40. Find the number.
EXAMPLE
When 6 times a number is increased by 4, the result is
40. Find the number.
Solution:
Let x = number 6𝑥 + 4 = 40
6𝑥 + 4 − 4 = 40 − 4
6𝑥 = 36
6𝑥 36
=
6 6
𝑥=6
ANSWER Therefore, the number is 6.
One number exceeds another
number by 5. If the sum of the
two numbers is 39, find the
smaller number.
EXAMPLE
One number exceeds another number by 5. If the sum
of the two numbers is 39, find the smaller number.
Solution:
Let 𝑥 + 𝑥 + 5 = 39
x = smaller number 2𝑥 + 5 = 39
x+5 = larger number 2𝑥 + 5 − 5 = 39 − 5
2𝑥 = 34
2𝑥 34
=
2 2
𝑥 = 17
ANSWER Therefore, the smaller number is 17.
One number is five more
than another. The sum of
the numbers is twenty-one.
Find the numbers.
EXAMPLE
One number is five more than another. The sum of the
numbers is twenty-one. Find the numbers.
Solution:
Let 𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒𝑟 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟
𝑥 + 𝑥 + 5 = 21
x = smaller number
x+5 = larger number
2𝑥 + 5 = 21 =𝑥+5
2𝑥 + 5 − 5 = 21 − 5 =8+5
2𝑥 = 16 = 13
2𝑥 16
=
2 2
𝑥=8
ANSWER Therefore, the smaller number is 8 and the larger number is 13.
The sum of three
consecutive integers is
306. What is the largest
integer?
EXAMPLE
The sum of three consecutive integers is 306. What is
the largest integer?
Solution:
𝑥 + 𝑥 + 1 + 𝑥 + 2 = 306 𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑔𝑒𝑟
3𝑥 + 3 = 306 =𝑥+2
Let
3𝑥 + 3 − 3 = 306 − 3 = 101 + 2
x = smallest integer
x+1 = next integer 3𝑥 = 303
3𝑥 303 = 103
x+2 = largest integer =
3 3
𝑥 = 101
ANSWER Therefore, the largest integer is 103.
If one number is three times as
large as another number and the
smaller number is increased by 19,
the result is 6 less than twice the
larger number. What is the larger
number?
EXAMPLE
If one number is three times as large as another number and the smaller
number is increased by 19, the result is 6 less than twice the larger number.
What is the larger number?
Solution:
𝑥 + 19 = 2 3𝑥 − 6 𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒𝑟 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟
𝑥 + 19 = 6𝑥 − 6 = 3𝑥
Let
𝑥 − 6𝑥 = −6 − 19 =3 5
x = smaller integer
3x = larger number −5𝑥 = −25
−5𝑥 −25 = 15
=
−5 −5
𝑥=5
ANSWER Therefore, the larger number is 15.
