Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test

Targets

• What is a Wilcoxon Signed Rank test?

• How is it calculated?

The Wilcoxon signed-rank test is a non-parametric statistical hypothesis test used to compare

two related samples, matched samples, or to conduct a paired difference test of repeated
measurements on a single sample to assess whether their population mean ranks differ.

counterpart to the t-test of dependent samples.

Only two dependent samples with at least ordinal scaled characteristics need to be
available.
Variables do not have to satisfy a distribution curve.

Hypothesis

Null Hypothesis (Ho = 0)

In the population, the central tendencies of the two dependent samples are the same.

Alternative Hypothesis (Ha ≠ 0)

In the population, the central tendencies of the two dependent samples are unequal.

 Measured values are in pairs

 The pairs result , repeated measures of the same individual.

EXERCISE NO. 1

You wanted to check if there is a difference between the morning and evening reactivity of 7
people. Use alpha= 0.05.
H0= ?
Ha=?

TESTING HYPOTHESIS

H0= There is no significant difference in the morning and afternoon reactivity of the students.
Ha= There is a significant difference in the morning and afternoon reactivity of the students.

ANALYZE > NON PARAMETRIC TEST> LEGACY DIALOGS> 2 RELATED SAMPLES

α= 5 %

Decision:
Since Sig = 0.176 > α = 0.05 we fail to reject the H0

Conclusion:
At 5 %= There is no significant difference in the morning and afternoon reactivity of students.

Because of the variance in the scores, the Student t-test says there is no significant
difference. The Wilcoxon signed rank test, which is more sensitive than the sign test, shows a very
different outcome and supports the alternative hypothesis (H A).

EXERCISE NO. 1

A quality control inspector wants to test the claim that a spray-on water repellent is
effective. To test his claim, he selects 12 pieces of fabric, sprays water on each, and measures the
amount of water repelled (in milliliters). He then applies the water repellent and repeats the
experiment. The results are shown in the table. At α= 0.01 , can he conclude that the water
repellent is effective?

EXERCISE NO. 2

You wanted to understand whether there was a difference in smokers' daily cigarette
consumption before and after a 6 week hypnotherapy programme. In order to do so, you’ve
selected 10 individuals, and checked the before and after of the 6 weeks hypnotherapy programme.

EXERCISE NO. 3

You wanted to check if there is a difference between the before and after scores of the
students after reviewing some parts of the exam. You have selected 15 students to take the exam.
At 5% significance level can you conclude if the review is effective?
