PETER Robinson has delivered a tough message to trade unions, warning that radical changes to the public sector in Northern ireland cannot be stopped. in a speech to business leaders yesterday against a backdrop of looming public sector strike action, the first minister said that those who oppose reforms made inevitable by shrinking budgets can shape, but not stop, change. Mr Robinsons intervention came just hours after health minister Edwin Poots said that some patients in Northern ireland may have to pay for some treatment under the NHs.

The DUP health minister said that women who choose to have their babies by Caesarean section, but medically could have a natural birth, may have to pay. in a speech to about 200 business leaders at a Confederation of British industry (CBi) lunch yesterday, Mr Robinson did not mention trade unions by name, but it was clear who he was referring to. However, Bumper Graham from the public service union NiPsA accused the first minister of getting too close to business rather than fighting the cuts. speaking in the ballroom of the La Mon House Hotel, the first minister said that he was not ideologically opposed to private businesses providing public services. i am not someone who believes that the public sector has a monopoly of knowledge or a divine right to be the sole provider of public services.
