Модальне дієслово
Can – позначення можливої дії, здатності (I can read French/I could buy this book, when it was on sale), також
можна виразити пропозицію чи варіант – You can help him tomorrow. у майб. (зможемо зробити щось колись) –
використ. мод. вираз to be able (to) (❌ will can), також ця форма може використ. у будь-якому часі. (I will be
able to fly a kite tomorrow because it will be windy)
can / could – для прохань (could більш ввічлива форма) – I could buy a car 5 years ago
may – використ. щоб показати можливість чогось – She may come back. (ймовірність 50%) I think the children
may be in their room now - або щоб запитати дозвіл – May I leave now? may менш формальне, might більш
форм. Речення з may має більш формальний відтінок, ніж з can
must – тільки у теп. часі, have to – теж повинен, але має як і майб. так і мин. форму. Must - коли маємо
обов’язок, який ми встановлюємо самі для себе або для інших і повинні щось зробити (He must be at school
now/My mother always says that I must be more organized) або висловл. припущення – She must be stuck in traffic.
Mustn’t – заперечна форма, дуже сильна заборона, майже як на рівні закону (you mustn’t park here). (❌doesn’t
must)
Have to – коли говоримо про зобов'язання, які продиктовані зовнішніми факторами, наприклад, про статут
компанії або будь-якої установи. Як правило, це закон або керівництво до дії, яке не можна змінити, маєте
робити завжди (мин. форма – had to) (I have to do my report/ I have to wear a suit in my office). запереч. форма –
don’t/doesn’t have to у теп. та didn’t have to у мин.

4. Use modal auxiliary verbs can, may, must in positive or negative forms (can't, mustn't, needn't).
5. Rewrite the sentences and use the verbs in positive forms (can, may, must) or negative forms (cannot, must not,
need not).

здатність: Harry can run really fast — Гаррі може бігати дуже швидко.
можливість: The temperature in the mountains can be low even in spring — Температура в горах
може бути низькою навіть навесні.
дозвіл/заборону: Can I go to school now? — No, you can’t — Чи можу я зараз піти до школи? — Ні,
ти не можеш.
пропозицію/прохання: Can I do anything for Mary? / Can you help me with this heavy bag? — Чи
можу я щось зробити для Мері? / Можеш допомогти мені з цією важкою сумкою?
упевнену здогадку: This man can’t be over 40, he looks much younger — Цьому чоловікові не може
бути більше 40, він виглядає набагато молодшим.
Речення з may має більш формальний відтінок, ніж з can.
Library users may borrow only a limited number of books — Відвідувачі бібліотеки можуть брати
лише обмежену кількість книг.
Крім того, за допомогою цього модального дієслова ми також можемо говорити про можливість. Наприклад:
I think the children may be in their room now — Я думаю, що діти зараз можуть бути у своїй кімнаті.
Також використання may є нормальним у реченнях, де мовець виражає дозвіл/заборону на певну дію.
Зазвичай конструкції з цим словом використовуються у формальному спілкуванні або офіційних
прописаних інструкціях.

You must not run. You’ve got a weak heart — Ви не повинні бігти. У вас слабке серце.
впевнену здогадку:
It must be so unpleasant to listen to her constant complaints! — Мабуть, так неприємно слухати її постійні
скарги!
Однак, якщо дія є вимушеною, людині доводиться так чинити через обставини, що склалися, то ситуація
передається за допомогою have to/has to:
Emily has to get up at 6 a.m. and she hates it — Емілі встає о 6-й ранку, і їй це не подобається.
ці слова не мають закінчень -s, -ing або -ed, а також не змінюють свою форму залежно від часу.
Виключенням з цього правила є окремі модальні дієслова, наприклад, can та could, may та might.
Зазвичай модальні дієслова не мають часу:
You can call now. (present)
Після модальних дієслів має бути основне дієслово у формі інфінітива, але без частки to. Виняток:
ought to.
✅He may be ill.
✅He ought to listen to teacher.
❌He may to be ill.
Однак, can може використовуватись з пасивним інфінітивом, щоб говорити про те, що можливо зробити:

Дієслово must може вживатись лише для теперішнього або найближчого майбутнього. У всіх
інших випадках краще вживати have to. Ось схема еквівалентів must для різних часів:
Present simple = must/have to
Past simple = had to
Present perfect = have/has had to
Future simple = must/will have to
Щоб виказати заборону та не надавати дозвіл на щось обирайте can`t або may not, але не couldn`t.
