Unless – якщо не:

Provided/providing (that) – за умови, що:

As/so long as – за умови, що:

1. Щоб висловити жаль з приводу того , що щось не так як нам хочеться

"Шкода, що я не живу в місті.»

- Як бачите, пропозиція в теперішньому, але англійською

використовуємо минулий час.
Отже, структура: I wish + S + V 2 (V ed), хоча іноді використовується
Past Continuous, якщо необхідно підкреслити тривалість (паралельні дії:
шкодую в даний момент про актуальний зараз дії в підрядному
реченні).

I wish he had a driving license. - Шкода, що у нього немає водійських прав.

I wish it was not snowing now. - Шкода, що зараз йде сніг.

2. Якщо наші жалю стосуються минулих подій, то використовуємо Past

Perfect в підрядному реченні, а саме: »I wish + S + had + V 3 (V ed)»(Дію в
підрядному передує I wish - жаль).

I wish I had come to your wedding. - Шкода, що я не прийшла на твоє весілля.

I wish I had not called him yesterday. - Я шкодую, що подзвонила йому вчора.

3. Висловити засмучення і розчарування англійською можна за допомогою

модальних дієслів. Так, в структурі «I wish I could do smth» оповідач жалкує
про те, що не може зробити (Дії стосуються теперішнього часу). А ось
конструкція «I wish I could have done smth» перекладається - шкода, що я не
міг зробити , І відноситься до минулих подій.

I wish I could stay with you. - Шкода, що я не можу залишитися з тобою.

I wish I could have given you a lift. - Шкода, що я не зміг тебе підвезти.

4. А ось якщо ви хочете змінити ситуацію, висловити невдоволення,

роздратування, нетерпіння (коли це вже закінчиться), то необхідно
використовувати would: «I wish + S + would + V» в значенні шкода, мені так
хотілося б (дія в підрядному відноситься до майбутнього), іншими словами,
висловити наполегливе прохання. Важливо відзначити, що I і підлягає в
підрядному не повинні збігатися.
I wish you would treat me better. - Мені б хотілося, щоб ти ставився до мене
краще.
I wish you would not sing in the bath. - Мені б хотілося, щоб ти не співав у
ванній. (Використовується для регулярно повторюваних дій, які дратують)
