One of the widespread myths about travelling is that trains are the
cheapest way to take a trip across Europe — eventually this is not true. To
prove that we have conducted a short investigation. Train tickets are
becoming more and more expensive every year. A standard ticket from
Frankfurt to Rome costs a minimum of $350, and the price depends on
what time and day you are travelling.
The recent deregulation of air transport in Europe made it possible for
such ideas as low-cost airlines and increase in European destinations to
come true. Low-cost airlines appeared on the market with a new business
model different from the traditional ones. So flights are so cheap now you
can fly from Frankfurt to Rome for just $90, and you don’t have to worry
about food or drink as the trip just takes a few hours. Travelling the same
distance by train takes over 12 hours, and although it can be more relaxing
you will need to consider additional accommodation and dining cost if you
are travelling overnight.
1.Mark the following statements as «True» or «False».
1) According to the text, trains are the cheapest way of travelling across
Europe.
2) Nowadays train tickets are as expensive as they were several years ago.
3) Travelling by plane may be cheaper than travelling by train.
4) Travelling by train will take you longer, but it is usually more
comfortable compared to flying.

The Golden Gates of Kyiv are one of Ukraine’s oldest historical
monuments. They stand in a small public park at the corner of
Volodymyrska and Velyka Pidvalna Streets and currently serve as a
museum, a magnificent landmark and just a beautiful meeting point
easy to locate and nice to wait at. It gave its name to the nearest
underground station so no tourist wishing to see it will
get lost.
This gateway was one of three constructed by Yaroslav the Wise,
Prince of Kyiv, in the mid-eleventh century. It was modelled on the
Golden Gate of Constantinople, from which it took its name. In 1240
the Golden Gates were partially destroyed by Batu Khan’s Golden
Horde. They remained as a gate to the city during the eighteenth

London's Attractions
London is not only the political, financial and manufacturing centre of Great Britain. It
is the main tourist attraction of the country, too. London's many places of interest
attract thousands of tourists every year. Tourists usually want to see Westminster
Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral, the Tower

the Confessor decided to build a great abbey church there. Now there are royal tombs
in the Abbey, as well as memorials to Britain's famous people, including memorials to

Westminster was built, too, during the reign of Edward the Confessor. It was the royal
residence and the country's main court. The Parliament met there since the 16th till the
19th century. The present Houses of Parliament were built after the fire in the Palace
of Westminster in 1834. St. Stephen's Tower of the Houses of Parliament contains the
famous Big Ben.
St. Paul's Cathedral is Sir Christopher Wren's masterpiece built from 1675 to 1709. It
is crowned with a huge dome; inside the dome there is the famous Whispering Gallery.
Inside the cathedral there are many memorials, including memorials to Wellington and
Nelson. The Tower of London is associated with many important events in British
history. It used to be a fortress, a palace and a prison famous for its prisoners (like Sir

BOOKS AND TV
Some people think that as more and more people have televisions in their
homes; fewer and fewer people will buy books and newspapers. Why read an
article in the newspaper, when the TV news can bring you the information in a few
minutes and with pictures? Why read a novel, when a play on television can tell
you same story with colour, picture and action?
Why read the biographies of famous men and women, when an hour-long
television programs can tell you all that you want to know?
Television has not killed reading, however. Today, newspapers and
magazines are sold in very large numbers. And books of every kind are sold more
than ever before. Books are still a cheap way to get information and entertainment.
Although some books with hard covers are expensive, many books are published
today as paperback books, which are reasonably cheap. A paperback novel, for
example, is almost always cheaper than an evening at the cinema or theatre, and you
can keep a book forever and read it many times.
Books at home are a wonderful source of knowledge and pleasure and
some types of books should be in every home. Every home should have a good
dictionary. Every home should have an atlas of the world, with large clear maps.
It might be expensive, but a good encyclopedia is useful, too, because you can find
information on any subject. In addition, it is useful to have on your bookshelves
other non-fiction books such as history books, science textbooks, cookery books,
books about medicine and health, etc. It is equally important to have some fiction
on your shelves, too. Then you can relax with a good story, or from time to time
you can take a book of poems off your shelves and read the thoughts and feelings
of your favourite poets.
I Match the words on the left with their definitions on the right
1. ...an article a) a book that is used to study a school subject
2. ...an atlas b) a publication that comes out weekly or monthly
3. ...a biography c) a book with maps of the world

5. ...a textbook e) a story about a real person
6. ...a dictionary f) a piece of writing in a newspaper
7. ...a poem g) a book of word definitions
8. ...a paperback h) usually a short piece of writing expressing a deep
feeling or thought
9. ...a magazine i) a story about people who are not real
II Choose the best answer according to the information in the passage
1. Which is easier to get the news from?
a) a newspaper

Music in the Streets
As you go home after a hard day’s work, and you get off the metro train, sometimes
you have to walk a long way to the exit or to change trains. Suddenly in the noise,
some music is heard. Those are street musicians. You take out a coin from your
pocket and throw it into their hat or instrument case. These musicians bring color and
life to the city streets. Street musicians are aged between 17 and 30 years. Some of
them are men, some women. They play classical music, pop or folk music, old and
new songs. Many musicians are former university students or professional musicians.
Andrew Hain, for example, was once a music student, but he gave up music and
became a painter. Now he plays in the underground because he doesn’t want to forget
how to play. His girlfriend is a painter, too. She helps him to collect the money.
Another street musician, David MacNell, tells new players:
“Learn new songs all the time, or else you’ll have fewer and fewer listeners. Wear
bright clothes to attract attention. Make sure that the places where you choose to play
are warm. The best places are and bridges certainly the underground.”
On Sundays, Hyde Park is the best place as the speakers here address the people. The
street musicians are doing business with their the many tourists who visit the park.
The weather is one of the worst problems. It is not so easy to play the violin or the
guitar on a rainy day in November London and try to smile.
A much worse problem is the police. From time to time, they come, and the
musicians are moved to a different place. True, they are not often fined. One
musician told me:
“The policeman asked me what I was doing. I said I was just practising. Some
money just fell out of my pocket into the guitar case, and I was told to leave my
place. I think it’s not fair. People love street music. It makes the city more attractive.”

The Boy and the Door
There was a small shop in a little street in an old town. In the shop there were
beautiful things made of silver and gold. The small shop had a door that opened on
the little street. The shopkeeper was standing at the open door.
“Come and buy! Come and buy!” called the shopkeeper. “Come into my shop and
see all the beautiful things!” again he called. “Come in!
I shall show you beautiful things made of silver and gold.”
One day the shopkeeper had to go away to the king’s palace. The king wanted a
beautiful gold ring and a silver cup from the shop. The shopkeeper called the boy
who work for him. “I’m going to the king’s palace,” he said. “You must stay here. Do
not leave the door of the shop whatever happens. Do you understand?”
“Yes, I understand,” said the boy.
The shopkeeper went away, and soon he came to the king’s palace. He gave the king,
the ring and the cup. Then he went home. Soon he was back at his shop. He stopped
and looked up in astonishment. “What is this?” he cried. “Why are so many people
going into my shop?” Then the shopkeeper saw that the door of the shop was gone
and so was the boy who work for him.
Just then, the shopkeeper saw the boy. He was in the street near the shop. The boy
had the shop door on his back. He was standing in the square looking at some men
who were doing tricks.
The shopkeeper ran to the boy. “I told you not to leave my shop,” he cried.

The British Character
The British are often viewed as the most boring people in the world. They wear
unimaginatively formal clothes, eat tasteless food, and practice slow sports and have
a specific sense of humour which is not usually understood by foreigners. They are
also said to be conservative, reserved and cool. Indeed, the British are not very open
and spontaneous. They do not kiss or embrace by way of greeting so as not to allow
familiarity. They always keep a certain distance and are not willing to manifest their
feelings and emotions. It is not easy to make friends with them but once you have
made a friend, it is a friend for life.
The English are said to be the masters of trivial conversation. Their “small talk”
usually deals with the weather or some general questions as it is not accepted to
interfere in someone’s private life.
The British are very polite. They always queue when they are waiting for a bus and
hold the door open for the person behind them. On the other hand, the English
football fans are regarded as hooligans and vandals. Generally speaking, however, the
British are well – mannered.
“There is no place like home”, say the British. This proverb best express an
Englishman’s traditional love of his home. About 70% of all the people have their
own houses. Most homes have a garden in which the British spend a lot of time
growing flowers and looking after the lawn – a national pride.
The English are completely crazy about pets. There are more animal rights groups in
Britain than anywhere else in the world. Paradoxically, the English still love the
hunting of wild animals, such as foxes or hares, with the aim of killing them.
It is not easy to decide on the typically British characteristics. Not all English people
are cold, uncommunicative or boring, not all of them are crazy about lawns or
animals. Still, there is one thing that is typically British: a strong connection with
tradition and a wish to keep their country’s uniqueness. Some people say that the
British live in the past, but they are simply proud of their country.

A Story
One day some Americans were having dinner at a hotel in London. When fish
was put on the table one of them, a young man said: “Let’s examine the fish
carefully, perhaps we’ll find a diamond in it.” Everybody began to laugh, but an old
man said quietly: “Yes, I’m sure we have all heard stories like that. Let me tell you
what happened to me once.”
“When I was a young man”, he began, “I worked for a big company in New
