I. SYNOPSIS

This report contains the background information of my barangay which is the Oquendo Poblacion
including its geographic, demographic and economic profile of the community such as land area,
classification of land, population, number of households, means of livelihood, products of the
community, and industries will be tackled in this report through different references.

This report also discusses the environmental problems that Barangay Oquendo Poblacion has been
facing together with the solutions that the local government unit (LGU) provided to the certain issue’s.

Furthermore, this study contains enough information for readers to gain an understanding of how they
should approach the same environmental issues addressed in this paper in their community.

To summarize, this document is essentially focused with the collection of information through
references and the shindig of knowledge provided by the barangay secretary. The issues and challenges
it faces, as well as solutions from the LGU and other public sectors, arose as a result of recognizing the
barangay's problems.

II. INTRODUCTION

The primary goal of this research is to provide readers with an understanding of and detailed
information about the environment of Oquendo Poblacion, Calbayog City. Throughout the discussion,
the environmental issues of Barangay Oquendo are emphasized, as are the actions taken as
recommendations.

Environment refers to the natural surroundings and conditions in which we live. Unfortunately, this
Environment has come under serious threat. This threat is almost entirely due to human activities. These
human activities have certainly caused serious damage to the Environment. Most noteworthy, this
damage risks the survival of living things on Earth. Therefore, there is an urgent need to save the
Environment. Due to pollution and deforestation, the health of many people is poor. Conserving the
Environment would certainly improve the health of people. Most noteworthy, saving Environment would
reduce many diseases.

Harming the Environment and causing pollution have caused global warming. Due to this many humans
and animals have died. Hence, saving the environment would reduce global warming. It is necessary for
us people to take care of our environment and take part of rebuilding the earth in order for us to continue
living in peace and harmony with the beauty of nature that is free. And there’s a Famous phrase that I stand
with saying “why should spend billions studying the space hoping to find another planet that is habitable
when we can spend it rebuild Earth”.

This study mainly focus on how the practices of the people in the community can deeply affect, not just
our nature but also their health with my proposed project. It helps to avoid risks and disease won’t
proliferate in the environments and that can helps improve air and water quality as well as reduce
greenhouse gas emissions and increased safety and healthy people in the community.

III. BODY OF THE REPORT

Oquendo is one of the three districts that comprise the City of Calbayog.  It is located at the northern
portion of the City.  It is located at the northern portion of the City.  North of Oquendo is the
Municipality of Lope de Vega, Northern Samar.  To the south-east and west are the districts of Calbayog
and Tinambacan, respectively.  The poblacion lies at the northern portion of the district and is also called
Oquendo.

Located at a fertile though mountainous terrain, the area attracted settlers long before the oldest of the
present inhabitants could remember.  People settled along the locally historic Hibatang River.  In fact,
Calbayog's early history has been associated with the area.  What has been believed as the forerunner of
Calbayog is San Rufino which is found in the jurisdiction of Oquendo.

The town of Oquendo was created in 1883 in accordance with a Spanish royal order namely "Real
Order No. 191 de 13 Marso de 1883 approvando la ereccion en pueblos civil de la vista de Caybago".
What became the poblacion was the former visita of Caybago.  With the official approval of the
authorities, the official name of the place was changed to Oquendo a year later.

Two years after it was created a town, Oquendo became a parish.  It was erected on June 3, 1885 with
royal approval given on March 29 of the same year.  It was not immediately given a parish priest of its
town due to lack of priests.  Calbayog continued to administer the new parish until it was assigned to a
minister.

Caybago did not remain as the poblacion.  Later, Mag-ubay, for a short time, became the administrative
seat of the town and parish.  However, residents living along another river, Jamonini, found it tedious to
transact business in Mag-ubay.  People from Cag-anibong, for example had to travel down the Jamonini
river to Pagsanghan and up the Hibatang river to Mag-ubay.

According to a story heard by some elder residents of Oquendo, an agreement was reached to transfer
the poblacion to a place located sound both the Jamonini and Hibatang Rivers.  The place chosen was
end also called BATO.

Oquendo, formerly Poblacion, is a barangay in the city of Calbayog, in the province of Samar. Oquendo

is located at approximately 12.1288, 124.5363, in the island of Samar. Elevation at these coordinates is
estimated at 6.1 meters or 20.0 feet above mean sea level. Based on the data I have gathered from our
barangay secretary Barangay Oquendo Poblacions land area is 44.42629 hectares containing Mountains
and Plains.

The population of Oquendo grew from 2,154 in 2020 to 2,509 in 2022, an increase of 355 people in span
of 2 years. According to the data from our barangay’s secretary, the age group with the highest
population is 18-59 years old and the least population is 7months-2 years’ old.

The computed Age Dependency Ratios mean that among the population of Oquendo, there are 51 youth
dependents to every 100 of the working age population; there are 10 aged/senior citizens to every 100 of
the working population; and overall, there are 61 dependents (young and old-age) to every 100 of the
working population.

Details.

Our barangay is mostly composed of different types of land obviously the means of livelihood of most
the residents are more in agriculture, including farming different types of crops and also weaving of nipa
and copra and some are taking advantage of their areas building food stalls near the school and also
laboring. Since the means of livelihood of some residents of my barangay is more on agriculture the
product of my barangay includes rice and also copra which is used in making oil and many more.

Conversely, Waste is the main problem that my barangay has been facing for quiet long period of time.
For many years, most likely the problem is still the same. To mention, improper waste disposal which
causes the blockage of canals which creates floods.

Flooding and improper waste disposal are always the top problems, as I've noticed in our barangay after
years of living there. Consumption of goods rises as the population grows. Their demands are
increasing, and so is the waste that they produce, improper waste disposal can have negative health
consequences, such as contamination of water, soil, and air. Hazardous waste or unsafe waste treatment
methods, such as open burning, can directly harm waste workers or other people involved in waste
burning, as well as the surrounding communities.

4
In addition to that improper waste disposal also causes flood, Trash we throw anywhere block the drains
and ultimately clog drainages and esteros, hampering the free flow of water, which aggravate flood
which is also a problem.

According to one study, an average of 0.7 kg. Every day, a single Filipino generates tons of waste.
While the total waste produced by every Filipino due to modernization is 8,636 tons per day. When
improper waste disposal occurs, it mixes with various water surfaces and, when piled up, clogs the ways
of water systems.

With all the problems mentioned, there’s also a solution provided by our local government unit (LGU).
They have conducted a monthly general cleanup in the whole barangay. And they have bought their own
mini garbage truck roaming all around our barangay collecting wastes so that we wont experience the
same problem over and over again.

IV. CONCLUSION

In conclusion Barangay Oquendo Poblacion is just like all the other barangays has its ups and downs,
we may face a problem but we have a solution I commend the barangay officials for there hard work and
maintaining the beauty of our precious barangay and also leading the resident to work together with
peace and unity and this is what a healthy community looks like

Our lives and society depend greatly on the environment. It is one of the intermediaries that links people
to one another and teaches them how to interact with the environment they entered. The rapid change
and harm to our environment, however, is a reality that no one can ignore. that eventually it leaves a bad
impression on us as people. However, many people are still unaware that the people who are supposed
to be the environment's stewards are actually the main cause of the destruction.

Everyday human activities are constantly destroying nature's beauty, resulting in the Earth's survival
condition deteriorating. We recognize the significance of environmental stewardship, but it appears that
the majority of us are doing the opposite. We regularly threaten and abuse it. Furthermore, words are
more potent than actions. This is clearly incorrect. It is ineffectual to think and say that we can do
something but never do it.

This study tends to tell every reader the importance of the environment and why it has to be taken care
of, and we should do it wholeheartedly.
