Name of the Community: Barangay Dangay

A. Community Identification and Overview

1. Its individuality and uniqueness

Barangay Dangay is a gateway to paradise. One of the major seaports in the province,
Dangay Port, is located in this area. This is also known as the Pantalan ng Roxas, Oriental
Mindoro. From here, local and foreign passengers are being transported to Caticlan, a place
located in Malay, Aklan, which is one boat ride away from one of the most popular beaches in
the world, the Island of Boracay. The Dangay Port serves as the gateway to other provinces in
Visayas and Mindanao. It is a transient point for every individual who want to travel in a less
expensive way. Primary products such as rice, rice bran, fruits, vegetables, fish, and home
appliances, are also being transported from one place to another through this port. Brgy. Dangay
is indeed one of the key factors as to why the Municipality of Roxas has been considered as the
Center of Trade, Commerce, and Industry in the province of Oriental Mindoro.

However, Brgy. Dangay is not just a gateway to paradise. It is paradise itself. Since it is a
coastal area, it offers an endless view of the ocean. It is indeed a perfect place for relaxation. The
beauty of beaches, freshness of air, and hospitability of the locals in this area makes it a distinct
tourist spot. The community is a non-densely populated barangay and is blessed with a bounty of
natural resources, which are enough to provide for the sustenance of Dangayanons, the people of
Brgy. Dangay. A large portion of Dangayanons frequently catch fish to earn a living. Brgy.
Dangay is truly well-known for fishery and aquaculture, but it also offers livestock and
agriculture as sustainable livelihoods for its people. The people of Brgy. Dangay indeed relishes
the benefits of being away from the chaos of urban areas. The peaceful and resource-rich rural
area they live in enables them to attain a simple, low-cost, and yet good-quality lifestyle.

Moreover, Brgy. Dangay is a community wherein neighbors, as well as visitors, are

treated as families. In line with this, Dangayanons work collaboratively in order to make their
beloved community a place wherein peace and harmony continuously foster. The festive spirit of
Dangayanons is also one of the factors that make up their identity. Brgy. Dangay celebrates its
very own ‘Isda Festival’ through joining the SIPAG - Street Dancing Competition, which is
being held annually as a major part of the Roxas Town Fiesta. Isda Festival showcases the rich
culture of Dangay. It also features the exceptional talents of Dangayanons and serves as a glance
to their way of living. The Isda Festival mirrors the beauty and purpose of Brgy. Dangay, and
most of all, the notable efforts and hard work of its people.

2. First impression/” Look see” appearance

Brgy. Dangay is located in the Municipality of Roxas, in the Province of Oriental

Mindoro. It is a rural area that has some urban characteristics. At first glance, one can already
identify the balance in the way of living of Dangayanons. It can be observed that they live a
simple life by maximizing all the resources that they have. Because of its richness in natural
resources, food supply has become sufficient in almost every part of the area. Since this
community is not densely populated, the citizens of Brgy. Dangay do not experience
problems in housing, and all are considered as formal settlers. Moreover, a lot of
infrastructures have been built for the betterment of the citizens. Commercialized buildings
continuously grow in numbers, thus giving bigger employment opportunities for
Dangayanons. The improvements in the infrastructure sector are also very beneficial for
those who want to venture out for entrepreneurship. Indeed, these serve as the haven of
prosperity of the citizens.

Cleanliness and orderliness can also be noticed in Brgy. Dangay. These two
symbolize the discipline, diligence, and unity of the Dangayanons, as well as the proper
governance executed by the barangay officials. Indeed, it can be observed that this barangay
is ahead to other barangays in the Municipality of Roxas. With all these stated, it can be
considered that Barangay Dangay is an ideal barangay that one would want to belong to.
However, the fact cannot be hidden that this barangay, like any other barangays in the
country, is also facing many problems and challenges. These include the lack of medical
facilities or health centers, and weak security, especially that it is considered an ‘open
barangay’ due to the presence of the seaport. These factors offer risk to the safety and
wellbeing of the citizens.

was later named Paclasan (from the word Palasan, a species of palm growing abundantly on
marshy surroundings). On October 15, 1948, by the virtue of Executive Order No.181, it

and also to the businesses and jobs of the people. Boats and shipping vessels are seen in
the oceans of Dangay as these give them more efficiency on their occupation which
provide them an easier way to move their caught fish from the ocean to the shore.

C. Historical Origin

 Legendary or real history

Barangay Dangay is a small barangay located in the town of Roxas. Legends say
that Dangay was named after a guy called Dangoy. Dangoy lives in a peaceful and
bountiful place. He was able to sustain his life by fishing and harvesting chili.

As the time progressed, a lot of people saw the potential of the place and decided
that it is a great place to live in because of its beauty and natural resources that can help
them with their daily living. Dangoy, on the other hand, was accustomed to being alone.
He then decided to leave the area and stay on a mountain.

The people named the place Dangoy in honor of a Mangyan named Dangoy who
once resided there. The place was later named as “Dangay”.

 Reasons for living in that community

Barangay Dangay is just a small community, but it contains several riches may it
be on their fertile land or their wealthy bodies of water. It is why many Dangayanons
choose to live in this community as it provides them their sources of living and
prosperity. There is no need for them to go in transit for hours just to reach their
workplace. In addition, Oriental Mindoro is a rural province and the municipality of
Roxas is not yet a city, thus the expense of living is low without the need to spend a huge
amount of money to buy their needs and essential goods to survive for a day compared to
an urban area. The community of Dangay is just a small barangay with each resident
knowing one another as they share experiences, ideas, traditions, and beliefs. The bond of
every individual in the community have strengthened throughout the years as generation
of families passed together with their life living in Dangay.

Processing Questions:

1. How can the demographic profile help you in your SLP?

The Service Learning Project (SLP) is a capacity-building program aiming to improve the
socioeconomic position of program participants in a specific community. The demographic
profile in our SLP contains information about the people in a specific community for purposes of
generalization. Demography is highly important to a community’s development and
improvements. Population studies encourage one to assess how closely the economy's growth
rate correlates to the population's rate increase. If the population develops at a faster rate, the
economy will expand at a slower speed. Having the demographic profile of a certain community
helps us to have a knowledge and overview that are beneficial to barangay officials' strategies
and decisions, to suggest a feasible project that could aid in the resolution of the community's
problems that will raise awareness of the community's issues in the long run. Given the
demographic profile of the barangay Dangay, we can easily identify the problems that the
community are facing and provide attainable proposed solutions that will assist the community in
strengthening the measures and steps they are taking into action. Demographics can have an
impact on the economy's underlying growth rate, structural productivity growth, living standards,
savings rates, spending, and investment Therefore, issues and arising concerns of the community
would be easily identified and look on to. Demographic profile gives a background information
to a community based on its population, establishments, geography, and many more. This
understanding is needed in making an SLP since knowing the community itself and obtaining
significant information about the barangay would be the foundation of the program for the
proposed subject should be grounded with information that is based on facts and realities of the
community. As it gives more information on the community, the working group starts to have a
grip and comprehension on the community itself and what is needed to be done. That is why
having a good and comprehensive demographic profile would be an edge in making an SLP.

2. What are the challenges in your data gathering and how did you able to overcome it?

A normal functioning world that we used to have has now become a generation crowded
with restrictions. It is evident that the pandemic did not only impact the economy and daily lives
of the people, but it also greatly affected the students’ education and learning. In line with this,
for our group requirement for this subject, Community Engagement, Solidarity, and Citizenship,
we have encountered some challenges in relation to our data gathering. First, we had a hard time
to conduct an interview for we are also valuing the safety of our coordinator, as well as the
barangay officials. Thus, a conducive communication is complicated to be acquired. Secondly,
the data from the barangay do not suffice the necessary information needed for the task. There
were instances that we must seek for further details about the data and ask for clarifications
regarding a certain aspect for us to be enlightened on how to supply the needed information.
Another one, in this time where the COVID-19 remains a battle for all community leaders in
securing the welfare of their residents and community, barangay officials have priorities to
accommodate, rather than allotting complete assistance towards our request. There are several
duties that a public servant must first attend to, especially that this pandemic had resulted to
numerous concerns that the leaders of the community should deal with. With that said, it is
undeniable that the coordinator of the group shoulders a weight of responsibility and task as she
is the one in charge of the interaction and dissemination of data from the barangay to our group
discussions. Hence, the group relies on her. As a group, it is frustrating to witness our member
carrying the load of accountability and we only have limited actions to enact. Considering that
we also have other requirements to accomplish, time management is a struggle. This also
concerns our group coordinator since she needs to allocate a specific time for communicating
with our partner community. Lastly, the biggest struggle that our group had faced is to keep the
essence of “community engagement” high for we cannot completely engage appropriately and to
be in the community even through a simple collection of data due to the limitations that we have.
Nonetheless, these circumstances did not hinder us to fulfil our objectives in executing the said
group requirement.

As we experience many difficulties in performing the task, we still manage to solve these
problems. We strongly utilize the online platform in establishing relationship and continuous
interaction with one another to be able to remain updated and knowledgeable with the task.
Furthermore, we look for secondary references and studies that would be beneficial to furnish all
the parts of the SLP. In addition, the foremost mode of communication is accomplished through
this medium. Updates and follow-ups are also sought from our partner community to establish a
regular interaction and to keep them reminded of the data gathering. Having a set of schedules
and managing one’s time are strongly necessary. Most of all, proper communication is applied in
order to produce significant data and refrain from conflicts that may influence the success of our
task. Above all, we remain oriented of the goals of this task in conducting it which is to help the
community. Indeed, it is vital to make use of the available resources that we have regardless of
the barriers we are experiencing.
3. Strengths of the data you gathered.

At the midst of the pandemic, the data collection process of the group ran into roadblocks
that were crucial to the background check's procedure. Given that we had to provide data to
analyze in order to examine the strength of the data collected in the first place, the group was
fortunate enough to find an alternative option for data collection. For the sake of the group’s
representative and the contacted insider's health protection in the chosen community, an
agreement has been reached in which the data provider would simply fill out the required details
and relay it to the student representative of the community within a time frame decided upon by
all parties. We had contact with the Barangay Councilor and Barangay Captain of Brgy. Dangay
in our situation. The Sangguniang Barangay, or Barangay Council, it is the governing body of a
barangay. These were formerly known as the Rural Council and then the Barrio Council. They
have the authority to pass ordinances, levy taxes and other revenue measures, provide for the
construction and maintenance of barangay facilities and other public works. As a result, it is fair
to say that the personnel within the contacted community would function as a reliable source of
information. They have access to the information of the chosen community, giving the
information provides great strength. The insider must then review the official records kept in
their barangay in order to provide the researchers with the details they need. If these data came
from the official recorder of the place itself, the data gathered are certainly strong and credible.

The data that we have gathered are limited yet very much informative such as population of
each sitios, establishments, and businesses of the community. Lastly, the projects and investment
of Local Government Unit. These information about Barangay Dangay help us to have more
knowledge that would engage the group on the characteristics and life of the community. As we
gather information on the projects made by the local government, we could distinguish on what
sector they are focusing on and to have an idea on the problems they wanted to resolve. This
gives the group an idea on what are the present issues in the community, which they are exerting
an action and identify the problems that are not given attention by the local government unit.
This information could be a ground basis on the projects that we would want to implement for
the community.

4. What should be the important information that a good demographic profile should have?

A good demographic data must contain the necessary information about the citizens of a
community such as their age, marital status, gender, income, education, and employment. The
ability to measure these characteristics allows the community to identify the totality of the people
within the community. It can also be an avenue wherein this type of information provided gives
the people who are making SLP a bigger picture of how they can aid and help the community or
have information on what sectors within the community should be improved and needs attention.
A demographic profile should not just be about the quantity of the information that would be
given by the community, but also the quality of each. It is indeed essential for a demographic
profile to have more comprehensive and in-depth details, and these shall be presented in a clear
and concise manner. Moreover, the small yet significant information and figures are the key
elements that would make a difference in making an SLP and in having a good demographic
profile in general. These are often neglected by the community or not given enough attention, but
these guarantee a huge impact on the community. It is why all information that are given in the
demographic profile are necessary as all of it are important information needed in assessing the
community as well as in accomplishing an SLP.

personality. Children’s growth does not end in school, since also training them inside the home
gives them the sense of responsibility and respect which they can carry until they mature and
grow up. These children are mostly seen in the streets in where they use to play with their friends
and classmates due to having no access in parks in their barangay.

5. Organizations
Organizations have a huge help in the community of Brgy. Dangay as these are the
groups that provide projects to some targeted sectors. They ensure to help the local government
unit in doing tasks that would be beneficial for the whole community, which are inclined with
their ideas and goals. Some of the organizations that are very active in the community are the
youth ministries. They administer service in the churches and give spiritual guidance to the
youth. They also give education to the young people on different issues and problems of the
society since they are the ones who are knowledgeable on this aspect of the community. There
are also some support groups that are present in the community just like the Senior Citizen
Association that give assistance to the elders of the community to provide their needs. They
represent old-age citizens in the barangay in order for the local government to know their
position in a certain aspect or issue of the community. Having a good representation in the
community would give a much wider representation on the sectors of the community and being
able to raise concerns that would be beneficial for the elders are the primary goals of this
organization.

There is also a brotherhood organization present in the community. This is referred to as
Triskelion. The members of this organization conduct projects and fund activities for the youth.
They also do charitable events and acts during calamities as they have a huge source of
connection within the community.  Having a wide connection from these kinds of organizations
helps the community to be more active. This organization is indeed a great help to those who are
in need as they aspire to improve the way of living in the community.  Another organization that
is beneficial for the community is the Roxas Disaster Youth volunteers, wherein youths are being
taught of emergency response actions during calamities and disasters. They are under the
supervision of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO). In that
sense, the community has a huge support on the mitigation of disasters that could happen in the
community.  With this information, it can be said that the community of Brgy. Dangay has a vast
number of organizations in the and based on the observation that was conducted in this
community, these kinds of groups are beneficial as they give assistance to the barangay and its
citizens in many different ways.

6. Leaders

The leaders of the Barangay Dangay are comprised of barangay officials and the
Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), which are in charge of sustaining a well-organized community. The
Sangguniang Kabataan formulates and implements programs for the youth to ensure that even
young members of the community are participating and engaging with their fellow youth,
whether through recreational activities or purposive projects. In addition, the SK engages in
seminars, discussions, and training relevant to the performance being enacted by the barangay
leaders. The aforementioned tasks that the SK takes part in are highly valuable for the
development of their roles and reliability. Indeed, to start young is to grow efficiently. The
Sangguniang Kabataan represents the younger generation of hope and service through
performing platforms that are beneficial for the youth of the community in establishing
interactive relationships and witness their progress as they get to be involved.
On the other hand, the barangay officials regulate peace and order in the barangay,
ensure cleanliness and orderliness, attend to the needs of the people, and enforce programs for
the betterment of the citizens. These leaders are the pillars of the community as they direct the
systems and structures of the barangay. The unity and coordination of the community from its
goals and struggles to the welfare and harmony within the residents, lie in the control and
management of the barangay officials. The entire governing body of the community is pivotal in
supervising the barangay and its people.

E. Problems of the People

1. Insecurities

The insecurities of Brgy. Dangay includes lack of healthcare services and facilities, high
calamity risks, and weak security. First of all, Brgy. Dangay has only one health center, which is
situated in the barangay hall. Moreover, there is only one public hospital in the Municipality of
Roxas, which has a population of about 55,000 people. The Roxas District Hospital undeniably
lacks medical equipment and facilities as well as medical workers and practitioners. It clearly
does not have the capacity to attend to critically ill individuals and to accommodate a large
number of patients. This is why patients are often being transported to Calapan City, the only
municipality in Oriental Mindoro that has well-equipped and man-powered hospitals.

Brgy. Dangay also experiences problems in terms of proneness to calamity. Floods have
been naturally common in this area since it is located alongside the coast. Since it belongs to a
country that is extremely prone to typhoons, it suffers the risks of extensive flooding. The rising
of sea level during typhoons brings danger and harm to the citizens of Brgy. Dangay. Given that
it is a small barangay located in a rural area with some areas being low-land, and its funds are
definitely small. Thus, it becomes hard for the local government to curb the impacts of the
calamities that hit this area. In addition, due to the presence of the seaport, Brgy. Dangay tends to
weaken its security as it becomes an ‘open area’. Since it is a major entry point to the province of
Oriental Mindoro, Visayan Islands, and vice versa, different types of people, both local and
foreign, come across this area. Some of the perceived concerns regarding this matter include
unauthorized access, cargo theft and smuggling, terrorist fears, and piracy concerns. All of these
bring threat to the safety and security of the citizens of Brgy. Dangay.

2. Peace and order

The peace and order of a community is one of the topmost priorities that every leader would
take into careful observation. These act as a crucial responsibility that the barangay officials
must strongly guarantee because the safety of the citizens also depend on it. In Barangay
Dangay, there is an evident threat in security because it is an ‘open barangay’ due to the presence
of seaport, which serves as the gateway to Boracay, Visayan Islands, and other islands in
Mindanao. Thus, the community is often filled by people who are not residents of the community
but are people from other parts of the country. Furthermore, as cargoes are that are also being
transported through the port must temporarily stay in the location. Thus, the community tends to
be the staying ground of the people who do not officially belong there.

In addition, there are lots of tourist attractions resulting to an increased number of

visitors. The security of the community is indeed in the phase of a challenge regardless of the
implementation of CCTVs. Regular monitoring and through strict administering of rules and
regulations, peace and order would be acquired. It is also necessary to closely look into each
aspect of the community in order to refrain from concealed and illegal activities that may foster.
The welfare of the people is and should always be top on the line. Otherwise, the barangay
would no longer be a safe place to live in. It is vital to keep the essence of ‘community’ highly
regarded, for this will serve as the foundation of promoting peace in the community. Without
having it valued, potential unrecognized individuals may cause risk and fear to the citizens.
Therefore, Barangay Dangay must preserve a safe place where there is no room for probable
cause of worry and discomfort.

3. Economics

Economy is essential in every community may it be in the municipal or provincial level.

Since it is the indicator on how the money flows in a certain area. It also indicates if there would
be enough money and goods that would be sufficient for the survival of the citizens the
community. Barangay Dangay is mostly feature natural resource-based livelihoods, as the area is
geographically fitting for both agriculture and aquaculture businesses. It is why the community
focuses on the rural side as it prioritizes crops and fishes as well as improvement of
technological equipment that would help such sectors. Agriculture and aquaculture are the main
sources of income in Barangay Dangay, but tourism and business are also present in the
community. Resorts and beaches are also very evident in the seaside of the community, as they
attract lots of tourists. In this case, commercialization and urbanization in this community
continue to rise through the presence of various emerging hotels, restaurants, and other small to
medium-scale businesses.

Based on analysis of the information we got from the community and the demographic
profile of Barangay Dangay there are no problems that people encounter or handle in the aspect
of the economy since there are a lot of opportunities that are present in the community and there
is a balance between the agriculture and aquaculture and the urbanization and commercialization
in the area. The economy of the community is also stable in such sense that even though the
pandemic hits the country, the citizens are still able to obtain help from their local government
for them to cope with the damages they experienced.
4. Health and sanitation

The health and sanitation inside the community is very important. Strictly following the
protocols imposed by the local government will increase the ability of the people within the
community to maintain good health and sanitation. Through this, the residents will be able to
protect their health and avoid diseases that poor sanitation can cause. Good sanitation equates to
having good health, which makes it very essential to maintain the wellness of life in the
community. According to a local resident of Brgy. Dangay, health is one of the rising problems
which they are currently facing today because there is not enough funding for the health sector in
the community.  There are projects that cannot be implemented due to the lack of resources, and
the availability of doctors and health practitioners is also limited, thus making it difficult for the
residents of the community to receive adequate healthcare. Additionally, having only one health
center makes it difficult for people to obtain medicines and healthcare services, especially when
they are truly needed. Lastly, the nearest hospital in the community cannot cater to the needs of
the patients that come from the community because it is not fully equipped due to the shortage of
supply, resources, and equipment.

Table no 6. Service Institutions of Barangay Dangay
Data from Barangay Dangay Demographic Profile 2020

The table 6 shows the number of service institutions corresponding to each category. It is
shown that there are 11 churches in Brgy. Dangay. It can also be seen that the community has
insufficient health facilities and emergency medical services. It has only one healthcare center
near the barangay hall. This service institution attends to the needs of the residents in the best
and possible way they can, considering their available equipment and necessities. Moreover, the
center has a limited number of professionals who possess expertise in dealing with health-related
concerns and services demanded in the community. In addition, majority of the people leading
the mentioned health facility include health care volunteers, social workers, nurses, and doctors.
The barangay needs an accessible health station that can accommodate urgent problems
concerning the health of the people. Moreover, people resort to searching for better medications
and consultations to Oriental Mindoro Southern District Hospital, which is already the nearest
hospital, yet it is 4.8 kilometers away from the Dangay Port. This is an alarming case, because
the welfare of the people should not be delayed in terms of providing them with proper
assistance and that there are instances wherein the life of a person may be in a critical danger.
Barangay Dangay has no parks, and it only conceives one recreational hall, a multi-purpose
hall. Shown in the table are the 34 stores of the community including 7 meat shops, 3 tensorial,
11 hotels, and 13 restaurants available for the residents’ essentials. In addition, Barangay Dangay
has 4 schools composed of 2-day cares and 1 college, elementary, and high school institution
provided for the education of the youth in the community. Due to the fact that there are no
universities in the barangay, the students may have to search for a school that would cater their
desired degree program beyond the community. On the brighter side, Barangay Dangay is
abundant for its agriculture sector which encompasses 332 vegetable gardens, 69 livestock, 35
poultries, 12 hog piggeries, 3 rice mills, 1 fishpond, and 95 C-13.

Despite the beaming number of service institutions for the agriculture sector, there is also a
notable lack within stormwater and flood management systems which oversee and manage
surface runoffs. These systems are important to prevent flooding, especially in a rural
community. Consequently, these can also intercept possible erosions caused by the water. The
condition of water in the community does not face a recognizable problem aside from the stated
stormwater management systems but the electricity in barangay usually experiences power
interruptions. The community has an identifiable need to further develop its utilities and facilities
for this is for the benefit of all. Once the barangay has accomplished to execute the enhancement
and implementation of the facilities, the residents would have a better quality of living as they
can deeply utilize and enrich the significant aid of their community leaders.

6. Social and moral problems

In the context of Brgy. Dangay, the social and moral problems destroy a society's unity, but
they do not represent deep issues in the values of the family. In general, Brgy. Dangay has no
social and moral problems. There are only personal disputes within community relationships, but
these do not frequently happen. The community of Dangay does not need to change completely
on how they handle social and moral problems, but what they need to do is to maintain a healthy
relationship with everyone. The residents of Brgy. Dangay are known to be courteous,
hospitable, and kind. Moreover, they also maintain close ties with their families. The family
relationships in a community give a great effect to the social and moral issues the community is
facing, therefore making sure that every family does their part in disciplining each member and
taking care of them. This will positively influence and lessen the community’s social/moral
problems.

F. Impact of the World Outside

1. Inflow of ideas, goals, special forms, and moral codes

Looking back, the people of Brgy. Dangay were once contented with the simple, rural type of
living that they have. They use aquaculture and agriculture as their sources of income and
livelihood. However, due to the emergence and development of other communities that surround
Brgy. Dangay, the citizens then had the idea to improve their way of living. With this aim, they
strived hard and seized every opportunity that will come their way. Because Brgy. Dangay was
an open barangay, as what has been previously mentioned, people from different parts of the
country and the world were able to reach this area. These people bring significant impacts that
contribute to improving the quality of life in the barangay. They either establish their own
businesses or help the existing businesses grow and prosper.

Since a lot of foreigners come across the barangay, the social skills of the citizens are being
improved through time. The norms followed by the citizens, particularly those who reside along
the seaport, also change because of the people they usually interact with. These citizens used to
be traditional Filipinos, who live up with the traditional way of thinking and behaving, but now
these aspects of their daily lives are somehow being influenced. For example, the manner of
talking and dressing up of the citizens of Brgy. Dangay has changed and is constantly shift due to
the influence of outsiders.

The governing strategies of the barangay officials of Brgy. Dangay are also being influenced
by other government officials, both within the local and provincial sphere. Some programs that
are being conducted in other municipalities are also being adopted in the municipality of Roxas,
the town wherein Brgy. Dangay is situated. An example of this is the newly imposed program,
the experimental rerouting scheme, which aims to aid the traffic problems in the town proper.
The idea of this program has been drawn from other municipalities in the province. Indeed,
through the proper utilization of the various impacts of the world outside the barangay, the
citizens are made able to improve their way of living.

2. Influences

In Brgy. Dangay, the Mangyan culture plays a great role in influencing the people. When
they meet lowland farmers, missionaries, merchants, and government authorities, they embrace
respectful submissiveness. The language is mainly Tagalog, but some of the dialects have been
heavily influenced by the local Visayan and Mangyan languages. On the other hand, tourism in
Brgy. Dangay also brings massive influences on the local citizens. Due to the presence of an
operating seaport and vast beach strips, the tourism sector in this community is on the rise. It is
one of the fast-growing industries in the barangay and it helps in improving the standard of living
of the people. It not only entails better income, more employment, and reduction in the number
of people leaving the rural villages in search of work. It also sparks changes in the way of living
of the citizens through socio-cultural exchange. The foreign tourists are known to influence the
people of Barangay Dangay in many ways.

3. Migration

Migration can be observed in the community of Brgy. Dangay. The type of migration
present in this barangay is emigration, or the act of moving away from a certain place to settle in
another place. The common reasons of the citizens for leaving this community are to move to
bigger cities or other countries in order to work or study. They do this because they want to have
a decent job or attain higher wages. Since opportunities are limited in the rural areas as they
focus on agriculture, they resort to moving to urban areas. Some are also choosing to move to
other place because they want to provide better education for their children and to give them a
better future that they do not see in their current place. As mentioned, not even a single
university is situated in the province of Oriental Mindoro.  Thus, the young citizens of Brgy.
Dangay usually go to Manila, where most of the universities in the country are situated, in order
to pursue higher education. In addition, there are limited advanced technologies in the
community both in education and private sector. Generally, the people of Brgy. Dangay migrate
to other places to improve their current state of living and to secure their future.

4. Pastimes

People who have hobbies are less likely to experience stress, low mood, or depression. These
pastimes are important for living a balanced life because they allow people to enjoy activities
that provide physical, mental, emotional, and artistic benefits, therefore making life more
meaningful, satisfying, and enjoyable. The barangay's favorite pastime demonstrates that people
enjoy watching and participating in healthy competitions. Sports tournaments and talent shows,
which take place during barangay gatherings, which are being conducted occasionally before the
onslaught of the pandemic, are among the citizens' favorite pastimes. This information is
according to a local resident of the barangay.

In addition to that, the geographic location of the barangay and its providence of
abundant natural resources leaning on the fisheries and aquatics also makes the citizens enjoy a
good relaxation in the beach, in addition to the thrill of water activities. The residents of Brgy.
Dangay enjoys the privilege of having beach strips located in their area. They often visit this
place to unwind and bond with their families.

G. Goodness of Local life

1. Location and site

Barangay Dangay is located in the seaboards of Oriental Mindoro, Philippines. This

barangay mainly features the Dangay-Dalahican Beach strip, which is one of the tourist
attractions offered by the municipality. This is mostly known because of its beauty that can be
considered as world class. Aside from this, the San Rafael Cave is also located near this
barangay, which is also a pride of the community due to its natural beauty and mineral resources
found there such as stalagmites and stalactites. The cave also becomes home to different species
of birds, bats, and different animals and plants that are found in this area. This also helps
preserve the biodiversity in the Municipality of Roxas, where Brgy. Dangay is located. These are
only a few of the reasons why this cave stands out to other caves in our country. As mentioned,
this community is also for agricultural and aquacultural works. This helps the residents attain
income and provide for the needs of their family. Indeed, the location and site of Brgy. Dangay
contributes to the goodness of life of the citizens. It aids them in surviving and in improving their
living conditions through time.
2. Peace and order situation

Maintaining economic prosperity, civil order, and political stability in a community need
the presence of peace and order. Peace enriches our cultures and lives by encouraging people to
welcome individuality and love one another to the greatest degree possible. As stated before, the
barangay is an ‘open barangay’ due to the presence of a seaport that serves as a gateway to
Boracay, the Visayan Islands, and other islands in Mindanao, which brings challenge in
maintaining peace and order. The rise of tourism in this area enables people from all over the
country and the world to reach Brgy. Dangay. This also makes the barangay a way for different
people to go across different tourist spots. Regardless of whether or not CCTVs are deployed, the
community's protection remains a problem. Peace and order can be achieved by regular
supervision and the consistent enforcement of laws and regulations. Furthermore, not only our
fellow people can disturb the peace and order in the barangay, but also natural disasters. Because
Brgy. Dangay has a high calamity risk, the safety and security of the people are also at risk. For
the people of Brgy. Dangay to maintain peace and order in their community, one must look out
for and protect one another, maintain good health, build good relationships within the
community.

3. Availability of jobs

It is known for a fact that the community's resources can be turned into a source of
income. Given that Brgy. Dangay is a community rich in aquatic resources and is surrounded by
a large body of water, it provides many opportunities for jobs. Fishery and aquaculture are the
most popular types of work in Barangay Dangay, due to the community's proximity to large
bodies of water rich in natural resources, along with various types of fish, shellfish, clams, and
other ocean resources. They also have fishponds where they cultivate fish for fish farming or
recreational fishing, but most importantly, they are raised for commercial purposes such as lake
stocking or wholesaling.

Thankfully, Brgy. Dangay is abundant not only in its seas, but also in its fertile soils and
lands. If aquaculture is not a choice for a job seeker, they should look for work in agriculture, as
many people still depend on it for their livelihood. Rice, fruits, vegetables, and rice bran, which
they are famous for, are the most popular products produced and harvested by the farmers.
Domestication of animals is also very lucrative in rural areas like Brgy. Dangay, so livestock,
poultry, and hog piggery are abundant in the community.

Commercialization and urbanization, in addition to the community’s agriculture and

aquaculture, provide employment opportunities for the locals. The variety of food
establishments, supermarkets, cafes, hotels, and formal institutions, business establishments, and
offices often provide jobs to the citizens of Dangay. Since business is clearly the community's
economic backbone, work availability is not a major concern since people can build their own
jobs and become self-employed entrepreneurs. They have enough resources in their area to have
a much broader range of job options for people to choose from.
4. Community relationships

Residing in a community is completely different from merely involving oneself to it, that
is why community relationship is very relevant and essential to achieving a well-functioning
community. This is how the Barangay Dangay works, as its resident value the sense of
community that they have established, wherein families that are residing are passed from
generations over generations. Since the demographic profile of the community says that most
households have extended families and all of them are registered in the community, in that case,
it became a tradition for the families to live in the same community through time. It is merely
because of the ideas, beliefs, and experiences that individuals shared with one another inside
their community, why the relationship among them have been truly strengthened. The bond of
the community and how it works as a one is mostly shown in their celebration of ISDA festival,
in line with the SIPAG – street dancing competition, where the residents showcase their different
kinds of fishes and aquatic activities. These festive events are the evidence on how culture is
passed from one generation to another and how the community have built their relationship
tightly as one.
