A Town is a residential place that is characterized to be smaller than a city but larger than a
village. The word town was derived and taken from the old English word “Tun”, which means
“enclosure, garden, filed, yard, farm, manor, homestead, dwelling house, or mansion.
A town is a human settlement with a defined boundary, a local Government that is responsible
in governing the whole town, and especially a town must have a name.
The designer’s chosen town for this project and considered as an example of a town is the
Coastal town of Ballesteros in the Province of Cagayan.
The small town of Ballesteros has that layout in centro (Poblacion) that can easily be
understand. It has a three Schools in the centro (poblacion), Two private high schools were
located on the opposite end of the centro (poblacion), while the public elementary school was
located far north toward the sea. The other structures like marketplace, bandstand, municipal
hall, open-area auditorium, tennis court and Roman Catholic church were within walking
distance of each other.
The town’s main industry is Agriculture, fishing is also a huge source of income since Ballesteros
is on the coast of south China sea. The Sea is also the town’s main attraction where in people
can have picnic along the beach, stroll on the shore or visit to watch sun rise and sun set, or if
you want some fish for free you can just help haul fishermen’s huge nets and after that they will
be rewarding you some fish that they catch.
Ballesteros, Cagayan
The Town of Ballesteros is one of the 28 municipalities in province of Cagayan. It has a land area
of 120.00 square kilometers or 46.33 square mile. This town is smaller by area when compared
to the City of Tuguegarao with an area of 144.80 square kilometer or 55.91 square mile. The
elevation of the town is 5.0 meters (16.4 ft.) and its highest elevation is about 49 meters (161
ft.)
Ballesteros constitutes only 1.28% of Cagayan’s total area. According to 2020 Census the
population of Ballesteros has reached 34,488. These values represent 2.72% total population of
the Cagayan province, or 0.94% of the overall population of Cagayan valley region. In
accordance with these figures, population density is computed to have a 287 inhabitants per
square kilometer or 744 inhabitants per square mile.
The town of Ballesteros has 19 Barangays
Economy:
In this graph of poverty incidence in
Ballesteros, Cagayan it shows that
from year 2000 the poverty rate
went to 41.34 % and reduced after 6
years and then went up again and
went down again in 2015 with only
12.46% below poverty line.
The designer chose Centro east (población) as the place to be developed. Although the
marketplace, bandstand, municipal hall, open-area auditorium, tennis court and Roman
Catholic church were in Centro east, and it may seem developed, the designer saw that some of
those structures are under and less developed. The designer also recognized a congested
market and road /road networks near the marketplace and the surrounding environment.
The market in Centro east Ballesteros is not really an actual single structured market when
compared to the market of Tuguegarao City that is huge and organize, what I mean is that in
Don doming public market in Tuguegarao City there are stalls that separates the vendors of wet
and dry goods. In Centro east Ballesteros there are less stalls and more vendors on sidewalks
and some vendors inside main market using “trapal“as their roof to cover them from rain and
heat of the sun.
The Designer also want to develop a fishing port near the market where in fisher men and
vendors can do business together without so much hustle, or maybe people can buy these
products for lower price. The sports complex is also in line for development for we know that
Ilocano’s also love to play sports and organize events like beauty pageants during fiesta, boy
and girl scout events and many more related events that can be done in their sports complex.
One more concern is the vehicle and human Circulation in and outside the market. In addition
to that is the lack of parking area/space on the vicinity. These are the reasons why the designer
chose this part of the town to make it fully developed to give the town people a better and
comfortable town life.
Combining age groups together, those aged 14 and below, consisting of the young dependent
population which include infants/babies, children, and young adolescents/teenagers, make up
an aggregate of 30.25% (1,198). Those aged 15 up to 64, roughly, the economically active
population and actual or potential members of the work force, constitute a total of 61.62%
(2,440). Finally, old dependent population consisting of the senior citizens, those aged 65 and
over, total 8.13% (322) in all.
The computed Age Dependency Ratios mean that among the population of Centro East, there
are 49 youth dependents to every 100 of the working age population; there are 13 aged/senior
citizens to every 100 of the working population; and overall, there are 62 dependents (young
and old age) to every 100 of the working population.
The median age of 28 indicates that half of the entire population of Centro East are aged less
than 28 and the other half are over the age of 28.
